  1. It's pretty unprecedented though. When else in recent years have we had 1400 people, many children, brutally tortured and murdered on a single day and then thousands more dying while trapped without hope of escape in an enclave bombarded with the latest weapons of war? Even the Ukrainians had places to flee to. It's such an awful thing that I think (as with 9/11) 60 seconds reflection to respect the victims is not unreasonable. I can't recall anyone banging on about "virtue signalling" when there were minute's silences after 9/11, but then, in those days, social media hadn't persuaded some that signalling virtue was a bad thing.
  2. I suppose a lot depends on this health issue. To be honest, I find it more concerning than rumours of rifts with Tinnion or rows with the Lansdowns. If you're in chronic pain, you may well decide to step away from a very demanding job.
  3. Will you think the silence for Sir Bobby or at Remembrance Day is "virtue signalling" or is it just when we remember foreign dead that it is?
  4. Only one was on target, but two hit the bar. A few centimetres, maybe millimetres, under and we've conceded. We were as abjectly awful until the Knight for Roberts subbing as I've ever seen City. Just not in it. After the subbing and shape change, we were a different proposition. Not dominating possession, but much more comfortable defending and able to worry Coventry when we attacked. Had the whole game been like that, no one would consider it a "smash & grab". Dickie and King are rightly taking plaudits for their play, but yesterday showed how important Jason Knight is to us, I think.
  5. I guess it's just a gesture of respect for the many, many dead under tragic and horrific circumstances. I seem to remember we did the same the matches after 9/11 and the Tube bombings. There will (rightly) be similar for Bobby Charlton on Wednesday and it's just about respect and remembrance. A minute's silence isn't about bringing anyone back to life or solving some political problem.
  6. Elokobi was the same. The incident took place in front of the Atyeo and I could clearly hear the snap from midway down the Dolman. The horrified faces of the players, from both teams, who surrounded him told me that would be the last we saw of him. Amazingly, he recovered in time to play a game for his parent club (Wolves) by the end of the season, and went on to have an injury blighted but 10-year long professional career, playing mainly at non-league level.
  7. Andy Davies runs those two close. Seems to actively hate us. My blood runs cold when I see that boggly eyed slaphead officiating at AG.
  8. Mark Sykes being just one Northern Ireland-born example.
  9. Not sure Jordan's in much of a position to criticise other owners, having taken Palace into administration.
  10. I don't think they are all like that. There's a lady from County Galway who is as Irish as they come, but is a regular visitor to my village. During the World Cup, she actually bought an England shirt to watch our matches. Admittedly, she may not have done that if she was back in Tuam. Another old Irish fella I knew in Shepton Mallet, would cheer on England against anyone - providing they aren't playing the Republic. They aren't exactly England supporters but have no particular antipathy to us and, in both cases, they watch a lot of PL and so have their favourite English teams/players etc. Only bloke I know around my neck of the woods who regularly goes out of the way to cheer for anyone who is playing against England is a Frenchman. But TBH I think this is a bit of a comedy pose, because he's often said how he prefers living here to France.
  11. I think we have a so-so squad with a few nuggets of real quality and it only takes a few injuries to have people playing in less favoured positions and we look a bit lightweight. But Nige has built squad resilience, bonding, morale: all of our players now look as if they are determined to fight for points and happy to be here.
  12. Woss on about? I played in the Wimbledon & District Premier Division.
  13. Highly skilful player and a very clever man. RIP.
  14. That's only in built-up areas (as well you know ) Had some great runs up the A470 on the bike. Pop down the A40 through the Wye Valley towards Brecon (stopping at The Bear in Crickhowell for "refilling") then up towards Builth Wells and out into the Cambrian Mountain - the "Welsh desert" where you can ride a decent fast road and not see a soul for mile upon mile.
  15. "Robin on my shirt, Atyeo statue gleaming, 43 years of hurt, Haven't stopped me dreaming..." Seriously, you summed it up. We are the great under-achievers (and I speak as a man who did see the glory years in Division One). If City fans sometimes sound demanding of the club, this is why.
  16. Very much what I was getting at on the matchday thread when I said some very good individual performers didn't deserve to be on the losing side. Knight seems to have the ability to rob anyone lingering on the ball. Did it v Plymouth and - particularly in the first 15 minutes - did it v Stoke. Made a number of players look silly.
  17. As a keen Zen Budhist Pete Beale would know that a state of permanence cannot be attained. Certainly not in football management...
  18. I think @frenchred hits the nail on the head here by noting we aren't asking for the moon. Getting 20K+ people safely into a venue for a couple of hours or so isn't an easy thing, particularly when numerous punters are rather "refreshed" and numerous laws and league regulations have to be observed. Nobody is expecting second tier football to offer a luxury environment for £350+ a season. But lots of minor niggles never seem to be addressed. Communication with fans is poor. Be nice if some of the things @W-S-M Seagull lists did improve, because fans have been going on about them for years. Obviously success on the pitch and entertainment is the priority, and the fanzone concept is pretty successful. Let's see if we can make the in-stadium experience better?
  19. Certainly seen a lot of similar incidents given.
  20. Actually, as you know, once you get there even if you aren't competitive, you've elevated to a different level if and when you're relegated. Some clubs do not feel the benefit but they have to be small in the first place or exceptionally badly (or corruptly) run. I'd like to see us there and that does mean the owner going for it rather than thinking he can maintain the only Championship club that balances the books.
  21. Jack Hunt and their number 4 - Grant, just looked him up - would seem more to blame there.
  22. She'd certainly agree with you about the twatty behaviour of some "customers".
  23. I'm not lying. My niece works in the Dolman and she gets a day notice. Had to cancel plans involving my family last Saturday to man the bar for rugby. Perhaps not all staff are agency. She is.
