  1. Regardless of whether you think Wendy is voicing a ridiculous opinion , this is a discussion forum and she is entitled to her view. I'm with you on waiting to see if he works out as intended, but I'm probably less certain that he will.
  2. Left Back in the changing room? ? No, seriously I agree with your post. I don't think we can make the measure of him yet and summer and the start of the new season will really be the time to give a verdict. I'd just rather see fewer underwhelming performances and Harry seems to be at the heart of most of those recently, so I'd rather not see his name appearing in the starting line-up for the Reading game. Some people seem to have decided that Pearson can do no wrong in the transfer market, but of course he, like every manager in fact, can. Danny Simpson is a case in point. People will point out how cheap Simpson was, but paying an over-the-hill player who was slower than a pensioner going around Asda, for nearly one and a half seasons was a poor use of resources IMO. For now, I reserve judgement on Cornick, but I'd rather see less of him, until he has a pre-season with the club.
  3. I'd rather we tried to win them. The Luton result was forgivable; Swansea wasn't. When our starting line-up play so badly, we give ourselves a mountain to climb and I can't blame the subs for coming on to a generally blah atmosphere. 390 minutes roughly now for us and Cornick's never had anything better than an occasional decent pass and one shot on target where he should have scored (or squared it). While I'd agree that others have also had poor games recently, they've also had some very good games since January. Cornick has just been mediocre throughout. Never terrible, but never that good either. Even with Conway injured, we aren't short of attacking options, so I'd rather Cornick was dropped and spent the next three months getting his fitness back, perhaps popping up in U23 games for competitive practise - that motivated Wells when he was similarly out-of-form. Then let's see how he looks in the close season. We're trying to sell season tickets here in a difficult economic climate for everyone. A run of uninspiring games and maybe a poor 18th place finish or whatever is hardly going to win over the waverers. The abuse that HC comes in for on social media is ridiculous, but I think there's no way he should be starting games for us. For now.
  4. Vyner and Scott. Didn't do the other categories. Scott has had the most sublime moments and been the most skilled player, but Vyner has been consistently reliable, day-in, day-out.
  5. Thanks. Just out of interest who do you think has shown less? (Disclaimer: due to work commitments , I haven't seen any of the Luton match, even highlights, but I understand he was rather more involved there than usual)
  6. Not technically dead rubbers yet and what are we trying to prove by playing an out-of-form and potentially unfit striker? Pearson has spoken of trying to win as many of the remaining games. That means playing your best XI. He's had 320 minutes plus playing for us now and looks our worst senior player. I'd rest him, let him recover fitness and sharpness and maybe give him a run-out at the very death of the season.
  7. I've got the Alex Stepney medal and used it (pre-Google days) to resolve an argument with a workmate who resolutely refused to believe that he had been in the '70 squad. I had to remove Stepney from the book, which has subsequently been lost, so I don't know if the ones in the book are rusting, but he is unblemished.
  8. You either drive a Smart car and can park it sidewise, or you're a speedwalking champion. We arrive about 1:30 and are usually about 20-minute walk from AG. That's fine, we like to get a few ales in on the way and don't like drinking in the concourse. Being all nicely brought-up gents, we don't park on corners, over drop kerbs or encroach on people's drives. If we did that, we could probably park a couple of minutes from the ground.
  9. I have no problem with waiting a bit longer to assess, but when there are other options available, I wouldn't be starting him or even bringing him on as a sub at present.
  10. I rarely watch it. Would rather go out and carouse on Saturday nights and watching a programme like that on iPlayer, the day after you know all the results, seems pointless. TBH although I enjoy watching live football, I'm not all that struck on watching the game televised.
  11. I must admit Peterborough, Hartlepool (and Barrow) I've never visited, but I've gone on the reports of those who know and have lived in such places. Although I've never been to Hartlepool, I do know it's one of the 10 most deprived areas in the entire UK.
  12. It is lovely, and despite my tongue-in-cheek Lazio references above, one of my mates from those days was the bloke who ran Perugia's Irish bar. He was a Lazio fanatic, which isn't a way to make friends in Umbria.
  13. I know. I had an apartment in Umbria and watched the (original) Perugia. They'd shutter the whole city when the Lazio ***** were in town. ? ?
  14. This rather out-of-date but well-researched guide suggests that the bulk of Atalanta Ultras are now apolitical. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jan/07/atalanta-serie-a-club-guide-ground-ultras-caniggia But yes, football and politics collide in Italy in a way they do not in England much.
  15. He's a dodgy geezer: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2279584/Two-Luton-officials-admit-criminal-pasts.html
  16. I think the association of Atalanta with the Communist Party of Italy is historical and doesn't really apply nowadays. Bergamo, like other Lombardy cities with large immigrant populations, has lots of Northern League and Brothers Of Italy voters.
  17. Certainly an also-ran. Hull as well, although the Old Town was significantly improved when it became City of Culture. Hull and Stoke remain the only UK places where the shell suit still is common currency among young people.
  18. There's the dream. Progressive improvement, rather than boom then bust.
  19. Good point. We have a premier league winner. Hall of fame (in my opinion) UK grotty league: PL Clubs: Winner - Croydon (Palace) r/up Wolverhampton Championship: Winner - Luton r/up Blackpool L1: Winner - Barnsley r/up Peterborough L2: Winner - Barrow r/up Hartlepool
  20. And based in probably Britain's most horrible town. Seriously, are there any worse? Blackburn? Stevenage? Newport? Wrexham? Mansfield? It's certainly in the Premier League for grot.
  21. In which case, I'd see his 60-minute plus introductions in various games as tactical errors rather than attempts to justify a purchase. Although I haven't been impressed, I'm not writing the guy off. The Semenyo Is Not A Striker thread comes to mind. Whether it's a confidence issue, rustiness or afailure to adapt to our playing style though, Cornick isn't doing it. I know at Luton he scored lots of headers, something needing lots of high-quality crosses, not always our forte. The jury most definitely hasn't returned a verdict on this one.
  22. Perhaps I should make clear I'm more concerned about Cornick overall than playing tonight. We know Pearson is a stubborn man who takes a fair while to be persuaded from a course of action he thinks is good, but isn't working. Look at Martin as a late sub to "hold up the ball". Except he didn't. Worked on paper, not on practice. Maybe Harry will score one and then become prolific, but I'm concerned with the amount of time he has had, this striker hasn't come near either scoring or creating a goal We almost certainly have a run of dead rubber games coming in, so giving someone "10 games to establish themselves" might just be possible. Normally I'm afraid you never get that amount of time in competitive matches. We'll see how he does for the rest of the season, but if everything is merely "meh" we shouldn't be shy in calling it.
  23. I'm not blaming him for today at all, but it has seemed in some games like Pearson is pushing him on to try to prove his worth. To try to prove his purchase wasn't a mistake. Sometimes this has disrupted a decent period of play from us. Harry Cornick, like everyone else in the side, has to win his place not only in a starting line-up, or even as a sub. He hasn't done that for me. Tanner being under-the-weather explains his appearance today - but not always.
  24. It was an honest question. He could yet surprise me, but his main contributions thus far have been a decent pass through to Bell in the Blackpool and stuffing up a one-on-one in his debut. I'd rather he didn't seem to be shoehorned into the side so Pearson could try to prove he hasn't made a mistake. Cornick has to take his chances and win that place. He hasn't so far.
  25. Well maybe, but how many appearances are we going to give this guy before we say "it isn't working out"? And how many hundreds of minutes of game time after that is it going to be before Pearson comes to the same conclusion??
