  1. Why worry about the colour(s) used in training kit? It's the colours we play in on match day that matter.

During my time, I've seen us play matches in FA Cup and league twice in borrowed blue and white quarters, Cardiff City blue, a yellow shirt at Grimsby because the ref thought that our red shirt  clashed with their kit of black and white striped shirt and red shorts. There must be a few more that I don't remember or didn't see.

He said in his mini interview he’s been doing his coaching badges over the summer…a sign of a player wanting to prolong a career in pro football.  I see that as a positive for him wanting longevity in his playing career.

Oh yes, that sinister little smile when he knows he’s about to put them through a bit of a hard session.

    Agree, fantastic signing.

    https://trainingground.guru/articles/rennie-returns-as-head-of-medical-at-bristol-city

Rennie isn't doing his job if he doesn't ensure that the players are not instructed exactly what they are to do. He pushing them to their limits in order not because he is nasty but to help them perform to the best of their ability

The squad built by Pearson, Tinman and others is one that wants to be winners and all will work hard, and appreciate the help that our coaching squad are using.

I wish that we'd have had Rennie and his crew a few years back so that we could see the fiasco that would have been created by the Paterson's and Tomlin's in the squad.

Right first time. A bit of poetic licence on Atyeo as he was only an amateur at Pompey when HD charmed him and his family that City was the best option.

And quite correct about the three from our promotion to the First Division.

I actually believe Scott will get more caps than Atyeo, Roy Bentley and Billy Wedlock.

With apologies to Billy Jones and Joe Cottle who got one cap each in 1900's. Even before my Dad watching City as he saw Wedlock just before the war in 1914.

I would like to see Alex play behind the striker(s) more where his pressing ability can be better utilised. I think that's his best position. I think he is somewhat wasted in the defensive midfield position.

You may well be correct about his most influential position in the team. But due to the small squad in the last two seasons, Pearson has had no other options due to injuries and lack of cover in many positions.

So Scott has been used as the best answer in so many places but also for him a big help in his development. A one position player will never learn as much as Alex has in the two and a bit years that he's been in our side.

With all the financial changes that have been made, the best route for City would be to keep him for one more season in his best and most influential position which as you state, is probably behind the two strikers.

I shall bite, and guess the late John Atyeo and Gerry Gow.

If you are going to argue that John Atyeo wasn’t ‘Home Grown, then I would suggest Geoff Merrick or Gary Collier.

    Or perhaps Trevor Tainton.

Oh, there are just so many….

Yes we know what he is, but I am afraid his stats do no reflect this.

But the experts in the football world, meaning top, title winning managers and their top recruitment people, can see past the stats and rely on their own experiences to judge how good each "Alex Scott" is.

From the public comments by Guardiola after their FA Cup win, I would not be surprised if Man City tried to capture him. If we keep Scott at City for another successful season, he could be destined for the top six to be scrapping to sign him. He is a very talented young man, both on and off the pitch with the latter being so important to get to the top of the tree.

Finally, since I started watching City, there are only two other home grown players that could be considered as better than Alex. And that includes the memory knowing how they developed. Scott still has all that to come. I'll leave you all to work out who those two are/were.

Zak has got a big decision to make.

He’s had a good season, but lots in the melting pot, e.g.

    • was that Zak’s peak
    • can he show he’s good enough to be in a top 10 / 6 side
    • what role will he get elsewhere
    • what money will he get elsewhere
    • what fee do we want

    A lot to weigh up.

For, as much as he improved last year, both performance wise and vocal / leading wise, he started from a lower point, and to me he’s at the standard to play and perform.  We are looking to improve, Zak needs to improve again.  If he can, great.  But it’s not a given.

I want all my Centre-backs to be pushing each other…even though as someone else posted a few days back, I’d like to see pairings build.

Having seen O'Leary, Kelly and Vyner as raw youngsters at Taunton in the pre season of 2015, nothing would give me greater pleasure to see the two still at City as the lynch pins in our defence.

Yet, as I've posted in another thread recently, I expect that Pearson may be unsure that the two still with City, having taken until their mid twenties, will continue improving fast enough to take us higher in this league let alone the Prem.

I honestly think the contract being offered currently will be far superior to the one he signed in Oct 2020 (3+1), but I think Nige is pointing out (not necessarily to Zak) that one good season doesn’t entitle you to a contract at / near the top of the wage structure either.

I don’t think we should be under-offering either (just because he’s local), nor do I think Kalas’s offer has much bearing on Zak’s offer either…it will be based on them individually.

I fully expect him to sign a new deal here.

Is Pring in the same position as Vyner? Less than one good steady form, so needs another one this season before an increase?

Seemingly confirmed in the EP article about future gigs.

i'm glad it's happening, I was surprised how ragged it looked on occasion this season, i thought it would have a longer life span but suppose both Football and Rugby takes it's toll.

and presumanbly you can only mow the plastic inserts so many times?

I remember reading the Desso website when the first one was under construction and it stated that the life expectancy at the time was around 8 to 10 years. So nine years is bang in the middle and thus it's nowt to do with how many matches were played on it per season. Maybe the very wet and very cold weather last winter hastened it's replacement but may not have. Just the right life span for it.

I get all that. Agree with most of it.

But him being in the team during our most productive spells of form ain't necessarily down to him alone. So that sounds like a great example of making stats say anything you want them to.

I was thinking more simplistically - how many assists did he have last season .v. how many fuckups, starting with the first game of the season.

Well said. All players make quite simple mistakes but IMO, the timing of the two or three "Naismith Clangers" that gifted goals in early season, ensured that we would be stuck in the bottom half of the table all season.

First home game after the intensity of the pre-season work, with a squad of players who in the main had struggled to achieve in the previous two seasons. Fragile confidence with many in the squad and instead of a real confidence boosting home win, most fans and more importantly, the squad, went home absolutely gutted. It takes players a while to get over that.

I was at Chester and it still remains my favourite away days, trouble is my smartphone battery went dead so no photos.

Seriously, it was a great day but a bank holiday and as most photographers had worked Saturday they didn’t seem keen on working Monday too.

There was some good photos in the WDP the next day, including Terry Cooper being lifted on a players shoulders and nearly falling off, which would have been catastrophic as they were stood up in the stand with a big drop. I’d love to see them again.

I was there and it sticks to the memory and will always be among the most memorable.

However, another one for me was Northampton in the previous season. Yes the 1-7 hammering. I walked out at the end of the match not feeling disgusted or upset because the side didn't at any stage, give up. The six or seven kids with a few older heads, stuck to their task right to the end,  We still had a team to support.

Good to know, thanks - and pretty much plays to what we thought the scenario was. Kalas is predisposed to stay unless he gets something great elsewhere and NP clearly wants him to stay.

I’ve said on another thread that the interesting thing for me is what all this means for Vyner. Assuming we’re still in for O’Brien, it would give us CB options of Vyner, Dickie, McCrorie, Kalas, O’Brien, Atkinson (when fit) plus Pring and any U21. Vyner has one year left on a deal and we don’t appear close to agreement. We also know that prior to last season, he was on the way out. I also stand by that we shouldn’t offer Zak a deal that is in excess of what Nige sees as his value to the team over the next, say, 3 years

It wouldn’t shock me at all to see TK signing, us completing the O’Brien deal and then Vyner departing. It’d mean we cash in before he’s a free agent and off the back of a good season that we don’t know at this point if it was reflective of standard moving forward or just temporary good form, so probably get the most £.

Good reasoning in your post. My view of last paragraph would be slightly different.

    1. Kalas is, at present, a decent Championship centre half. But what will he be in two years of a three year contract? Not as good and still one of the highest paid?

    2. Zak Vyner had a very good record in season just gone. Big question is will he continue improving at a similar rate or has he reached his peak? Is this why the offer of a new contract has not be taken up yet because Zac wants a higher pay level and NP doesn't believe he will continue improving at last season's rate?

In some ways I can see why the club are offering as they are, but will either be able to take us to another plane?

It will be interesting to watch how it develops in the next two years if they both stay.

True , how long before they do. I haven’t got a problem with not driving , but the public transport needs to be much better

    Move Ashton Gate to Amsterdam.

Wife and I are on holiday here in a village about 15km north of the city.

Bus service is 8 buses per hour from 6am to midnight. Cost about 3 euros per journey.

You give two different figures, not entirely clear from the post.

Is it that the total attendance across the 3 divisions was 19.8m and of thst the Championship was 10,391,945.

It is welcome news of course, but also worth noting that as we know, tickets sold and season ticket holders are counted come what may (club and or relevant safety authorities will both actual attendees and sold seats) whereas in the past with so many more tickets sold on the day that was a truer reflection. Not a fully true reflection but truer all the same.

I don't disagree with you but you have to consider this fact.

Match attendances announced nowadays are actual "tickets sold" because it is now rare for Championship clubs to allow entry to stadia by cash payment at an entry gate. Thus actual attendance numbers are accurate because all sales are recorded and used in returns to HMRC.

Whereas in olden days there was fiddling at all stages from turnstiles to board room. Hence inaccurate attendance figures now a thing of the past.

I never saw the great man play unfortunately, when was his last game in a City shirt?

End of season 1966. Plus the testimonial in the next season when Leeds manager Don Revie, who had played in the same England team as John, brought his very good Leeds to Ashton Gate.

  16. I saw his first match in August 1951and a goal against Newport County and his last one in April/May versus Ipswich with another two goals.

And hundreds of games in between. Spoke to him on trains, Ashton Gate car park and the funfair at Cleethorpes two years consecutively before matches at Grimsby.

A superb footballer and always very willing to spend a few minutes to chat to fans. So lucky to watch and meet the greatest Bristol City player ever!

  17. Not at the game but brings back memories of the players of the time.

I'm on holiday so cannot consult my City books for the actual side. But I'd guess that the match was near the end of Pat Beasley's time as manager. So maybe Cook or Anderson in goal, Jack Bailey and Mike Thresher at full back, Alan Williams centre half, Tommy Burden wing half and Bobby Etheridge in midfield. Upfront Atyeo and Dermot Curtis, who scored half of the six goals in a 5-1 World Cup qualifying England v Ireland at Wembley. And wingers Wally Hinshelwood and John Watkins.

    So thank you @ashton_fan.
