I think we have Lee Johnson to thank it all took off after beating Man U.

You really are joking! We were second in the league after the Manure win.

Followed quickly by a stupid and inept defeat by Wolves after leading their ten men with 20 minutes to go.

Ignoring the Semi Final defeat by Man City, didn't we gather a magnificent total of 11 points from the next SIXTY NINE on offer!

Any other club in the country would have dispensed their manager. But not BCFC. Oh no he was still here a couple of years later, still bumbling along.

I remember going to Wolves when they were in the middle of their own triple drop, and guess what, they beat us

No surprise as our last away win at Molineux was in 1931.

  3. The great thing about the games I mentioned was that they were used when I couldn't go out to play the real thing. But with Subbuteo even that statement is incorrect. I ran a league in Filton, Patchway and North Horfield for about three or four years when a teenager. At the peak we had two leagues of twelve "teams" and an FA Cup. This is pre Champions league and League Cup. Matches played Sunday evenings with home and away fixtures.

Imagine an away game in Patchway, pouring rain, riding a bike from Filton along A38. It took ages to get your hands warm enough to play. Talk about Home advantage!

Loved every minute of it. We met so many friends and in the summers it was football out of doors in streets and Filton playing field. I genuinely feel sorry for today's young ones who sit at home staring at a little screen!

And Saturdays either City, Rovers, Bris Rugby or Church of England football League.

And I was double fortunate because Dad didn't booze every night so always a few pence available to watch City etc and as I got older for away games. Bear in mind that then children didn't have any age restriction to travel on trains. I was going to Cardiff to see Nana in the Rhondda from 6/7 years and London, Uncle & Aunt from 9.

And I still get match day buzz. The day that happens, someone please screw the lid down!

With a dominant ball winning CB, I’m more than happy to see him as a LCB in a 2 or 3.  He has been superb for us in 2023 but has performed  equally well in both positions.

If we are going with a back four, which I suspect is Pearson's preferred defence, two dominant centre backs, both good in the air and enough pace on the ground to cope with quick attackers. Pring isn't tall enough for a permanent spell in the centre but he is very valuable to defending against wide attacks and massively important for his ability to create real goal scoring attacks down the left side. If we had a Joe Bryan type in wide left midfield, then a real added bonus.

On the right side, Tanner and Sykes are a pretty good pairing although an effective but different combination than the left two.

So defensivel cover, assuming Kalas doesn't stay, we need two centre backs plus Vyner / Atkinson and a right and left back.

  5. Go to web site and look at the action photos from the game.

There are four/five pictures which show Cheltenham players clutching City player's shirts.

Enough said about the modern game of football.

Well done City youngsters to win.

Interesting line on still having a couple of "legacy players" from previous regimes, which didn't sound particularly complimentary. The first two that spring to mind are Han-Noah and Taylor Moore, but also possibly Tomas Kalas?

And Dasilva? Williams because he's very injury prone? Couple could actually mean up to five at least?

I appreciate many years have passed since you first watched JB  - I shall refrain from referencing the mention of a decade as in the Trigger and Rodney brush episode - but do you recall how you rated him at the time?

Did you see him as a future first team player, even a Premier League player, or just a competent teenager?

My answer to your question is that I saw his debut against Leicester when McInnes put him in the team not long after his arrival as manager. I was very impressed how Joe dealt with such a big jump into Championship standard. And while at times in his career here, he seemed to be in a dream, I consider that if we signed another player of his standard and age for a sensible salary and no transfer fee (signing on fee maybe) we'd all be delighted.

If the link to games doesn't work. Put Bristol City Football in the search bar on the site.

I was definitely at one game. City v Rovers FA Cup Feb 15 1958. Rovers won with a late goal that many of us thought was offside.

During the Atyeo Stand opening, I bumped into Geoff Bradford, who scored the winner, in Supporters Club. I said to him "Yes you were!' and he replied with a big grin, "No I wasn't. Look at the history books and the score is a win for Rovers". He was the only non City ex player there because he and Big John were very good friends.

Though Nigel indicated in his press conference this week that he would prefer to sign specialists rather than versatile players.

He gave Zak as an example of someone who had played in multiple positions but has had his best season playing in his specialist position.

It's very true that a player normally performs best in one position.

But if a player has league experience of other positions, that is a real bonus. Not only because they can move temporarily there but also because they understand the needs of colleagues. When and how to involve them or to take a different way.

Benarous may be ready before then, I believe we may see him involved in pre-season training.

Good and thanks for the info. Whilst he is not a copy midfielder to Scott, if Scott goes and Benarous can  stay fit, the loss of Scott will be minimised. Solid midfielders like Matty James are essential but the one's that my Dad used to call "Tin openers" are the gems who win matches.

    Examples from the past.

Tommy Burden 1955, Gerry Gow, Shelton, Doherty. To name a few.

I agree, thought the highest we would pay for a player would be £1m. But do you also think City may be happy to pay double for a key area (ie RCB) and someone who can come in and do a job straight away, rather than a young prospect from lower league who needs time to develop (ie Currie)?

One should also consider that McCrorie is able, apparently, to perform in several positions in defence and defensive midfield. This is how Pearson builds a squad that will be able to adjust during a match to suit the opposition tactics.

We already have Pring, Tanner, Naismith, Scott, Sykes, Weimann, who are able to perform in various positions so another one or two will complement. It's a very good way of having two players to cover every team position without having 22 in the squad. Thus allowing Academy boys to make appearances to help their growth into senior players.

We must also remember that we cannot count Atkinson and Benarous as first team squad members until possibly around Christmas/ New Year.

    True story about Joe.

Cant remember the year but the club had an event in the old shop prior to the pre-season trip to Botswana- the object was to sell the new replica kit and the incentive was that you could meet some of the players.

There was quite a few of the squad there including Joe. I took my lad to get his new kit but also suggested that he  took his old one and get it signed and I would get it framed.

The players were all happy to oblige and on the back it had 23 Bryan who was his favorite player.

When I approached Joe for a signature, I showed him the back of the shirt, his comment to my son was,

” you must have been the only one to have that”!

My lad was 14 and is no longer with us but it made his night.

Just to say all of the players and SC were a joy and very friendly.

Thanks @ScottishRed for your post about your son's meeting with Joe Bryan. A memory to treasure for ever.

Yes I am surprised at those comments too, I think it's an assumption because he isn't a working class lad and was well educated that he can't be passionate about the game.

It's worth remembering he's a winner, part of the most successful group of players we have had here in a nearly two decades, if there was a problem with his attitude then Cotts would have seen through that pretty quickly.

It's timely that the Joe Low thread has brought up discussions on players going down to easily, because in amongst the spectacular stuff that Joe did here, the thing I remember most was his refusal to go down easily. It's in the Bradford game, he bursts into the box and is clearly taken out and would win a penalty, but he somehow stays on his feet to cross the ball for the 4th or 5th goal (I lost count :) ). That said more about his attitude than a lot of guff about his background.

Thanks for your comments. I've never spoken to Joe Bryan but I suspect that his family background and his schooling had a big influence on his development as a footballer and a human being. I spoke to an old friend of mine who was a teacher at QEH and he said that Joe Bryan had a good character and always did the best he could at everything.

We have really benefitted from the recruitment of Matty James and Andy King from Pearson's previous positions and no reason why we would not have the same from Bryan's return.

If we are serious in wanting to get promotion, we need all the help we can bring together.

    Well done Alex Scott ?

    Well deserved.

    ‐----‐---------------------------------

Who the hell does he think he is  ?

Another arrogant Manchester United player in the making.

Manchester United loanee, Amad Diallo is not happy to have missed out on Championship’s Young player of the Year the award for this season. He simply wrote, “Young player, who?” via his Twitter account, accompanied by two laughing emojis, and fans have been reacting.

Seems from that comment that he, Diallo, believes he is a super star already. Whereas Alex Scott is working hard to improve every time he walks on the pitch. He is playing for the team just as much as he is for himself. I guess that Diallo would not have acted as Scott did when Cornick put a sitter over the bar. Tried to pick his team mate up and then sprinted off to get in position for the goal kick.

  15. Big congrats to Alex Scott, a very good footballer at his age. The youngest in the team yesterday, yet his reaction to the miss by Cornick showed how good a player and team member that he is.

A pat on the back and probably a few words of sympathy to a player nearly ten years older is such good team spirit. I know he is destined for higher levels than we can provide at this time but one more season would be wonderful.

Thanks for your post. Like many others I did not know the history but wondered if the name "Blackboy" was a corruption from the French word for "wood - Bois".

Then on the Downs is the road "Ladies Mile" which is so named after the "working women" who made their living from the randy male population.

As for the history of so many towns and cities in Europe and Britain, every country in the world has abused other humans and many animals ever since our time on this Earth. We should never forget the past but use that knowledge to make ourselves better humans but treating all races and religions and other football teams with respect and equality.
