Admin Maesknoll Red Posted November 15, 2003 Admin Share Posted November 15, 2003 I was under the impression that the Olympic games were for amatuer sportsmen, i.e. Audrey(sic) Harrison the boxer only turned pro after the Olympics, so how can professional footballers take part? I'm sure that the premiership managers would be up in arms if their young stars (Wayne rooney, John O'shea etc) were called up for an international campaign lasting a month. x3widRacin
This changed in the 90's - Good example is Basketball with the whole US Dream Team Deal - the olympic comittee became much more lenient and left "professional" decisions like this up to each individual organizing comitte - For Football/soccer they've chosen that anyone Under-23 is eligible I guess, In baseball They typically use all Minor-League players, but that is changing now allowing Major Leaguers in, etc. etc.

x3widRacin
I don't think they will, but I know that this is an issue that was raised at the latest FIFA congress, Clubs are putting pressure on Associations to pay for players wages during competitions such as World Cup, Euro, etc. and maybe more I'm not sure
