Two Home Four Goals In Both. I'm In Shock Again.

Surely I must be dreaming.

After several seasons of dross City for the first time in ages score 4 goals in two consequetive home games.. Not only but against two teams that many City fans dislike the most, Palace and Cardiff.

After tuesday I didn't think it would get much better but today's game was as good if not better particularly as City were up against far better opposition who like Palace had no answer to City's slick attacking forward play. Once again Woolford was fantastic, involved in almost everything and his two goals epitomised his performance. How he never got MoM is a mystery.

Conceding two goals will concern McInnes but that aside every City player on show today was impressive. Baldock made an immediate impact and his finish reminded me of Tony Thorpe. Both Stead and Taylor were excellent again.

Terrific game, great performance from City and three more points.

It is great finally to be entertained. Spent the last few season pretty much dreading going to the gate. Today was fantastic against a decent team.

100% agree. The last I looked forward to home matches was way back in the days of Danny Wilson. I always turned up expecting to win back then. Should City carry on with the same level of performances as we've seen so far then that feeling will be back once again. I can't wait...

Yes another cracking home performance at this rate we will be miffed if we don't score 4 every home game!

Baldock looked really sharp and took his goal well and hit the post for Woolford to knock it in for his 2nd.

A few of us wondered why WHU wanted Maynard as they already had Baldock who looks a lot more of a goal-scorer than NM did last season.

I know I am stating the obvious, but the difference is Mcinnes.

As we left AG today, I said to my mates, that man will be managing in the Prem within two or three years.

His passion and tactical awareness on the touchline was there for all to see at both games this week.

Hopefully he will get there with us !!

Early days yet, but suddenly that starts to look like a possibility.

How long did it take us to bag 8 goals and 6 points last season? Must have been at least october?

24th September against Hull, 1-1, we got to 6 points for the season (8th game, but we were on 6 points until our 14th game when we beat Barnsley 2-1 on 29th October)

27th September against Reading, 2-3, we scored our 8th league goal of the season (9 games in)

26th November against Southampton, 2-0, we scored our 8th home league goal of the season (9 home games in)

Improvement indeed.

The difference is definitely McInnes in several different respects. It amazes me there are still a handful on here who don't recognise it.

Firstly the squad. McInnes identified correctly the gaps and weaknesses in the squad and quietly went about sorting them out. We have a pretty good balance in the squad now with at least one specialist for each position and in most cases two. It's still a work in progress but it's definitely significantly better balanced and got more quality, something that the last three managers never really got right.

Secondly the tactical awareness. At 2-1 today, Johnson or Millen would have thrown on an extra midfielder or defender and tried to cling on. McInnes instead brings on our pacey striker, gives the crowd an immediate lift and limits how adventurous Cardiff can be going forward knowing the counter has a lot of pace. He made them react to him, we got a third goal assisted by Baldock. We changed shape and shored things up with Elliott and Cardiff scored a fairly lucky goal (the scuffed shot went straight to Helgusson). So we act positively to bring on Davies and along comes a fourth. He's not afraid to change shape, not scared of the 442 (an apparently dead formation!) and not scared to make changes when the situation demands.

Third and perhaps most importantly, he's got charisma and he's got the players confident and wanting to play for him. There was ten times as much composure on the ball today as we saw at this time last season and it all stems from the mental state the players are in. It's not something that you can really learn how to do, some people just have leadership in them and McInnes, unlike Millen, does.

I'm delighted with the last two games and very optimistic. I will still be happy with mid table though because we're playing entertaining football and we're definitely heading in the right direction. I genuinely think we've turned the corner.

To Robbo's OP - I share your delight and surprise! I was very critical of the club after Millen's appointment. Oh for a man of McInnes's stature and quality to have stepped in when Coppell left...how different the past couple of seasons might have been.

But that's behind us and I couldn't be more delighted for the loyal ST holders who endured the dross. I fell by the wayside I'm afraid but I'm looking forward to getting down to the Gate in the near future. Early days but for the first time in a couple of years there is something to look forward to.

Congratulations all round.

glad to hear the urge is returning, Badg. I promise you that you would have been enthralled by both of the previous performances.

It's been exciting enough following the matches on here Jordan. Currently shuffling the diary to get to a match or two.

Glad for all you guys who stuck it out.

Spot on; excellent summary. Couldn't agree more.

As I've just commented on the relevant thread, a particularly striking example (no pun intended) of the man's shrewd judgement is his use of Woolford. When McInnes began, improbably, to select him in the starting line-up pre-season, some were perplexed and not a few moaned. The bloke's been little short of a revelation.

My only continuing worry is over central defence. There was a spell in the second half when we conceded a series of corners and our vulnerability in the air had me on the edge of my seat. If we can sort that, I see no reason why we can't have solid and relatively anxiety-free season. Regardless of age, the experience and leadership qualities of Gary Monk would do fine for me and would go a long way towards addressing that one outstanding issue, at least for a year or two.

My misses is delighted by the improvement: she was getting pretty pissed off with me coming home in a grumpy mood every other Saturday evening.
