How bad is the weather to call the game off so late? Just woken up in California keen to listen to the game only to find its postponed!

Peterborough & Wednesday winning away, Barnsley now level. Table could be looking pretty demoralising tonight and defeat on Saturday would leave us with a mammoth task.

When was the last time a team was bottom going into the new year and stayed up?

Dunno about championship but pretty sure it's never been done in the prem.

No its almost 48 hours of constant rain followed by a ten minute downpour onto a saturated pitch.

It was dry yesterday for the majority. The rain was pretty constant from midday, then about 2:45 it was horrendous. Ironically now it's stopped and there is a strong breeze. I'd say it have been playable at 4pm

Not only that, but I'm pretty sure a team has been bottom at the New Year and gone up...

The standing water had nowhere to go, the pitch was saturated and the water was lying on the surface. The groundsmen were working their socks off with rollers and brushes, but couldn't cover the whole pitch. Infact they were fighting a losing battle, credit to them for the effort.

McInnes and the groundsman(?) had a long discussion, the ref looked several times. The ball wouldn't bounce or roll.

Yes perhaps if we waited another 30 mins it could have been playable, but it would have been a farce.

It seems the drains or guttering were coping either, the walkway behind the Eastend was ankle deep in parts. Just one of those things.

Edit: for those asking why Bath etc still on, I live only a couple of miles away from AG and have arrived hom eto be told it wasn't half as bad here.

Shame as atmosphere in Wedlocks was getting good, lots of banter with away fans etc. Cant blame the club, but again nothing seems to be going right for us this season.

:badmood:

Look on the bright side - you had all the fun without the carp football ;)

3 points behind Barnsley and pBoro 5 points behind wed 7 points behind Ipswich

No point worrying about how far behind we are teams when we now have this game in hand which is against a very decent Watford side trying to be postive but think they'll beat us.

All attention must be focused on the Peterborough game now doesn't matter if they win again today we now need to start playing each game as a relegation battle or it'll be too late.

But i am

and its pissing down in Bath as well

I think the main reason was off today could be down to the fact the drainage system not working ? Though usually we can just take the covers off if before the game, though it was raining from about 1 ish and then very heavy rain where you couldn't hear yourself talk in the ateyo for 20 minutes or so.

#BristolCity v Watford - Heaton, Foster, Bates, McManus, Fontaine, Cunningham, Adomah, Danns, Skuse, Baldock, Stead.

I went to the Gate with hope and then I saw Fontaine, Foster and Skuse strutting their stuff in the warm-up. How are we going to survive with these players constantly in the team.

Fonts can play in this league all day long, according to DMac, I tend to agree, hopefully the captaincy being taken away will give him back confidence. Foster is OK, doesn't deserve the abuse he gets on here, Skuse similarly OK.

Watford came sprinting out to clap their fans, sliding over the pitch and having a bit if banter.

City came strolling out, scared of the rain, made it just about to the half way line and ran back in. Real men.

I know what you are saying, after seeing impressive 'Klinsmanns' from the Watford players I was willing ours to do the same, or better. But I think they would have got injured or drowned knowing our luck!

Seriously, if they had come out and had a laugh they would have been slaughtered on here wouldn't they? They were very subdued, under orders perhaps?

Views like that is the reason we are in big trouble. I look forward to the time when either Del or preferably a new manager will replace these jokers with better players.

Couldn't agree more the amount of water those blue things were turning out was impressive. The groundsmen desreve a round of applause they never stopped but were always fighting a loosing battle.

I understand that. But City looked almost scared to be out there.... Scared if the weather. Scared if the fans. That could have been a chance to see a bit if togetherness...

Well said. There are many things to be annoyed with the Club for atm but today is not one of them. It is one of those things and cannot be helped. Those criticising the pitch have surely never visited the Gate before, it is immaculate and easily one of the best maintained in the division.

Credit to those guys, they worked their buts off and I also applaud them. I hope our pampered players show the same workrate against the in-form posh on Saturday.

So glad this view isn't shared by the manager. Oh wait, it is .....

These wasters are EXACTLY why we are bottom of the league.

I wish people would stop defending mediocrity.

Was sat at back of atyeo and from 2.30 onwards parts of the pitch looked dubious. Then the rain came and was torrential, no chance that game was being played from 2.45 onwards, groundsmen worked there butts off but dolman side of ground was flooding whilst they cleared Williams end. Goal atyeo end was flooded as well.

There, sir, you have the whole thing in a nutshell. I've just watched the 1998-9 promotion video, and that team would have had the crack with the fans.

There really is enough to complain about within this squad/management team/club without looking to invent things.

The deluge between 2 and just after 3 meant the pitch was unplayable. The amount of rain we have had in the last week coupled with the steady rain experienced by the majority of this great city this morning meant the pitch would already have been extremely damp and the drains around the ground almost ready to burst. The amount of rain suffered in the hour before kick off was due to take place was the final kick in the teeth. Anybody who has to walk through Greville Smyth park would tell you just how difficult that walk was due to recent weather. If we had a history and reputation of poor pitches and cancelled games then I could understand, but nothing could be further from the truth. So why don't we (correctly) assume that just this once the weather got the better of our (excellent) groundstaff. As for the argument of 'well they got their game on', any Cricket fan on this forum would tell you that you can sit there perfectly dry while the other half of the ground is getting drenched, let alone the distance between Twerton Park and Ashton Gate.

As for the players, Jesus Christ what do you want them to do?

They came out and gave the crowd a clap? Are we owed something more than that? The only player who may have been a little bit nervous of going too close to the crowd and inviting abuse was Fontaine and yet he made more of an effort than anyone else and even gave his shirt to someone in the Dolman. Yes Watford's players came out and p***** around for a bit, but firstly they are in a slightly better position and their fans had travelled a far greater distance than the majority of ours so deserved a little bit of fun for a few minutes. I would also like to see how the majority of the forum had reacted had our players came out with massive smiles on their faces messing around in the water.

Bearing in mind some on this forum felt the need to castigate them a few months ago for being seen with a beer in their hand I feel they may have have received some extremely unpleasent comments had they came out and had a contest to decide who could do the best Klinsmann...

I never said I wanted them diving around the pitch. Which is why I agreed with redm's post further up.

City fans had made an effort to get down there. The ground staff worked their arses off in pouring rain.

City came out and looked scared of the rain and that they were being forced to get out there, following Watfords idea and clap. They couldn't wait to get back in the warm and back into their Audis and BMWs...

Some might knock him, but GJ would have made sure the players would have been out there to all four stands, clapping. It's the little things that make the difference.

.

First of all our players were actually out before Watford's so in no way were they 'following Watford's idea'.

Secondly can we not have a debate on this forum anymore without somebody mentioning that the players have nice cars?

Well said sir.

It's bad enough being bottom of the league, but I knew some would come on here and post nonsense. Mind you, you'd think SL with all his money would be able to zap the clouds like they do in Beijing.

Pitch was fine 15 mins before K.O. The heavens have opened and an absolute deluge of rain fell. The club can't be held responsible for this, just a freak of nature.

I was there at 14:40 and the pitch was not ok at all! Was never going to be played with the amount of standing water on the pitch.

There you go, my eyes aren't what they used to be - all the way from the East End...

I don't see what's wrong with mentioning cars though. At best it was a reference to them not fancying the weather and their body language looked way off. It wasn't ever a literal statement.

A football club is nothing without its fans, and it's this gap between us and them that worries me more than the Fontaine/Skuse debate.

Nonsense? What nonsense? The body language of the players looks shot. Their confidence at home looks gone. The players and fans are getting divided.

Surely that's worth a debate or a mention; no matter if people have different views? Or shall we all do high fives behind the bike sheds about our clean sheet at home?

Again, I got to agree with you. We looked like a team of individuals with the weight of the world on our shoulders, because that's what we are. Compared to Watford who looked like a team having fun, even if it was just for 5 minutes.
