Players To Leave If We Go Up?

If we went up, which players would not be good enough to stay on?

I would have thought:

Matthews

Tinnion (retirement? become coach)

Burnell (?? wouldn't have thought he'd be up to div 1 standard, but would probably stay as backup)

Stowell (retirement)

Hulbert

Clist

Bell (?)

We have a big squad and we would need to make way for new signings. We would need to buy a new goalkeeper backup for Phillips, a specialist creative midfielder, and a 20-goals-a-season in div 1 striker if we were to stay up.

I know it's a tad early to be talking about this, but you cant blame me for being optamistic

Interesting and disagree on a number of issues Gater.

GK - We need not only competition for Phillips but a goalie who dominates his area and especially the six yard box not just the goalline. Flapper is a liability now, come up against beeter sides with better wingers pumping in the crosses and our centre backs are going to be in hot water with him either rooted to his line or flapping about like a penguin up Clifton at 3.00pm.

RB - Amankwah is the only option we have here or Burnell reverting to his origins. Carey is far too slow for the 1st at FB he will be skinned.

LB - Happy here Woodman with a reduced terms Bell providing cover and experience and also Hill's versatility.

Centre Half - Again happy here Coles (if we can hold on to him in the Jan transfer window), Butler, Hill, Carey and Fortune. Jones may even be back by then.

defensive midfielder - again happy with Doherty (if he gets himself fit and matures once he hits 25) and Burnell but would have liked to have kept Hulbert as he is an all-round footballer which, imho, is more important in Div 1 than Div 2.

attacking midfield - now this is where I do feel we are lightweight and in more sense than the one. Wilkshire is improving but he is lightweight in the tackle and at holding the ball up (note oppos corners when he is often the only one left in midfield to pick up the clearances - the ball comes straight back). He is showing some nice touches and scored a couple of goals but I am concerned with his lack of strength. Tins will be ok, I have no doubt and he might well get a little more time and be less man marked in the First, I see him more as a distributor and director as he gets that little bit older. We do need someone here though with experience of Div 1 or Prem.

left wing / midfield - Will the inconsistent one eventually prove me wrong. He hasn't yet, 1 in 5 games is excellent, 1 is average and 3 shockers (just look at the last 5 games. I would have bitten WBA's hand off. Someone with pace and skill and guts required.

right wing / midfield - we are seriously lacking and the majority of this forum have been saying so all season. We need a replacement for SM. It ain't Roberts, he lacks the skill and the vision (and the cross). Priority as Amanks is going to be best utilised at RB

strikers - Miller is finding his feet (and staying on them more) and I rate him and believe he would do well in Div 1 after a years experience with us in England. Peacock, just give him a one year contract and he may still be up for it, give him 3 and he will play 20 games tops, could do well latching on to the knock-downs from Miller from the quality crosses the new wide men will put across. Roberts, the enigma, still not sure what to make of him, seems sultry and uninterested then gets the ball in our own half and beats 2/3 defenders with pace and then .........oh dear, don't think he will be up to div 1 and would'nt have him on the bench ahead of a season older Lita. Lita, we will find out, wants it more thn most, could be great. Matthews, now I believe he does have it if he was ever fit and by that I mean lean and mean, however, unlikely. So we need a poacher, a proven goalscorer but so does everyone else, won't be cheap for the quality we will be looking for.

You Think Tinnion is too old?? What!! He is one of the best midfielders we have playing for us at the mo, if it wasnt for him at times i would see us in the bottom half!

I'd prefer us to get promoted first and then see how the players fare in a higher league, Wigan, and in particular Crewew have made few signings and are doing well. But let's concentrate on the task in hand and get this long overdue promotion

If we go up or not we need:-

A new number 1 (keep phillips on bench)

20 goals a season forward (to play along side miller)

a dominant center midfielder ( mid to late 20s)

a new right side(we are weak at right back and right midfield)

I think mathews hulburt clist and bell will be released

and peacock wont sign a new contract

Gater2, I cannot believe you think Micky Bell is not upto Div1 standard!!

There is simply no gap between bottom 10 of Div1 and top 10 of Div2.. Micky Bell has been voted best left-back in Div2 for the past 5 years or so.. you are mad!!

Tinnion would stand out as quality in the Prem..

Matthews would be fine in Div1..

Div1 is far from super-human! We were much better than Cardiff last year and look at them flying high in Div1.. and Reading and Wigan who we have out-played in recent seasons.. you are mad!!

Whilst i think that Bell would probably make it in the First - i think he will be leaving at the end of the season as he is one of the biggest earners at the club. Which is why Danny transfer listed him a season or two to try and get him off the wage bill.

I also think that Matthews will be released at the end of tyhe season as he hasn't done anything in the last season or two other than be injured or unfit.

Marvin and Clist will also go in the clear out, not good enough full stop.

I personally think Micky Bell would be a below par 1st division left back and if we went up I'd be inclined to put Woodman in the 1st team instead. he'd be eaten alive by any good right winger like Scott Murray. He has lost pace in the last few seasons and he has been able to get away with it in div2, but would not in div1.

Matthews fine in div 1?? With his fittness he would not be up to it, his record since he's been with us hasn't been great and that's been in div2, so I don't know how you think he'd be fine in div1. Frankly our other strikers are better than him, and he wouldn't get many games if he stayed.

You underestimate the standard of div 1. Do you really think we are a better team than Cardiff, Wigan and Reading now, even though we might have been in past seasons?? The current squad we have would come straight back down if exposed to div 1 teams every week.

Matthews looked fine for Leeds in the Prem and on loan at County/Gillingham.. Matthews looked awesome when he first arrived here (Millwall/Reading games).. the only time he's really been fully fit since was the Gas in the cup when he looked really really menacing (scored 2 impressive individual goals and set-up Micky Bell's firecracker after a long run).. Matthews IMO on his day is possibly the most dangerous striker we have..
