Ashton to villa

Not convinced Villa are a sure bet to win promotion back at the first time of asking either. They seem to be cutting costs and any quality players they have (Richards, Grealish, Guzan etc) will probably move on.

Would be a hugely overhauled squad if they're relegated and they'll have to spend money to be competitive. Tough times ahead for them.

My first trip to Villa was in 1957 for an FA Cup tie. We lost 2-1 but Big John scored and absolute screamer from 30 yards with his left foot. I know we all keep saying it but with Atyeo in this season's team we'd be knocking on the door of the Prem.

I used to go there a lot when I lived in the Midlands. One night against Inter Milan stands out when Villa beat them 2-1. Milan had three great Germans in Matthaus, Klinsman and Brehme.

Also remember Bobby Gould puncing one into the net when it was easier to head it in s we only drew 2-2.

When did we actually last play Villa? I can't remember us playing them in the cup or anything recently...

The last League meeting was in January 1980, a 1-0 defeat at AG. Ten year later in the Summer of 1990, Villa sought a new Manager and following the double promotion, approached both Bristol clubs!

The sad thing is it means we have zero chance of a permanent deal for Baker. Not that it was necessarily on the cards, but you'd think we stand more chance with them as a premier league team.

I disagree, I don't think the odds would be effected that much. Villa will have to make a lot of cuts. If the offer is right, I think they would sell. Looks like dark days ahead for Villa. I cannot see them getting back in to the Premier League any time soon.

Have to admit to feeling sorry for Aston Villa this week.

Spent most of Tuesday at the ground and was escorted around the place by a number of their staff. The place oozes class - because everyone working at the club appeared to be very knowledgeable about their history and couldn't have been more hospitable. They were also very polite and courteous about BCFC and wanted to know all about us.

That 1982 match would have been one of my first City games. All I remember is being in the Enclosure with my dad.

I've always wanted to go to Villa Park so that's another reason we need to stay up...although it would be typical if it is an evening match when I've got to work late or something.

Wasn't the last league meeting in '79? A 1-3 home defeat?

I remember the 1982 FA Cup game well, I got warned by a chuckling policeman for throwing a snowball at a lino after a dodgy throw in decision!

My sister is a Villa fan, I bought her a hospitality package for a game vs Chelsea a few years ago as a Christmas pressie. They way they treated her was pure class.

They really made her feel like they were very grateful for her support and they phoned her a few weeks after to check that she'd had a good day and to get her feedback.

It was brilliant all round, especially as the game had to be rearranged but they were just superb and really valued the support.

Villa's off field team is very professional, very well organised and very much premier league. Pity about the guys on the pitch...

Didn't Gary Shaw rip us apart that day in 79?

The following season they were league champions and the year after that champions of Europe!

A great team back in they day

I would put them down to go straight through the league as they have nothing to offer and any, if, few decent players they have will want to stay in the premiership!

I don't get it.

Hull & Burnley are doing fine and even Cardiff & QPR that you would have thought would be basket cases have stayed in the division.

Man Utd. as well. I know we played Man City in the league cup a few years back and we played Everton in the FA Cup a couple of times. The last time we played Chelsea was THAT cup game. I suspect the top three are Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd.

So the might, assuming they get relegated get promoted or the might not.

I think i'm unsure about it because it depends who they bring in and what manager they have. They'll have the best resources and the biggest attraction for players in the League so they could very well do a Newcastle. On the other hand their owners are a nightmare and aren't willing to spend anything and their best players are likely to leave. It could go either way too early to make bold predictions.

Villa are a great club and as you said the whole place does have a certain feel of class about it.. I do usually take great enjoyment out of seeing the supposed 'bigger' clubs fall from grace (Leeds Forest and in particular Newcastle!) but something about Aston Villa falling out of the top flight that dosn't sit that well with me..

Im not so certain they will struggle next season though.. Of course players will leave that is par for the course but i think they will have enough £ to recruit and challenge at this level. Reckon they will be there or there abouts next season to be fair..

No chance. They will be one of the strongest outfits and still be a massive draw to potential recruits.

Ive never been to Villa but as a child they were always mentioned for hosting FA cup semi's etc. It sounded a huge ground, a ground you'd want to visit (before all the new builds and redevelopments). I've always wanted to go, would really love it if I could go and watch our club there. Didn't they just stay up last season, I remember being disappointed at the time.

Really can't see this, may attract players due to being ex Prem but a lot depends on Learner's attitude to relegation. They will lose a few players, some they wont be able to off load due to wages being too high for clubs to take on. If he still doesn't want to invest and no buyer comes in they could struggle. The team they have now could find it hard next year, even to compete in our div next year they would need new players and Learner seems to have lost interest. It may be a wake up call to old Randy , but he could go down the Newcastle route and invest and get promotion or end up like Wigan.

As a relative local (Worcester) I've been wanting this fixture for a very long time now, a number of friends are Villa fans and i must say out of the 4 Birmingham teams they are the most deluded arrogant bunch. So a timely victory for a club 'they have never heard of' with a huge city following wouldn't go a miss!

Everyone said Newcastle would melt down when they came down too, and that didn't happen. And teams these days are coming down with more and more money.

They will have to cut their cloth accordingly but I still can't see them being anything other than competitive in this league.

Happy to be proved wrong though! God help us if Villa and Newcastle come down - the media love in will be unbearable!

The Leeds owner will be happy though, they'll have fewer games on Sky.
