The Official Sheffield Wednesday v Bristol City Match Thread (Merged)

We really need to face up to the fact that our defence is very poor. The defending all season has been very poor - both Wigan and Villa could have been out of sight had they  taken their chances before we scored but the defending in the last two games has been rank. I cannot believe people were fearful of Flint leaving for a premier league club - he's not even decent championship standard. He has been the mainstay of a defence that has shipped around 1.5 goals per game since promotion. His positioning is very poor - hence the regular last gasp tackles and he  is simply not mobile enough at this level. As for the keeper........Did I really see a thread on here arguing he was the best in the championship or am I dreaming?

Losing in this manner could be a big problem for the teams confidence. Lee and Co have a lot of work to do this week. This result could be a big one for our season.

This is true but I don't think this will happen.  I think we're a bit more resilient than we were and I think we'll be able to see it as a bad day at the office rather than a disaster...

Disappointing tonight Tomlin needs to sort his head out (remove it from his own arse) and calm down, Tammy should have taken pen (LJ should have been making sure this happened

Flint needs a stint on the bench piss poor mistake on Saturday and useless again tonight, with Ekstrand and Moore to come it we can secure up the back 4....

ROD needs a smack in the mouth utterly ridiculous letting that goal in the twonk...

LJ need to put a rocket up his players tonight and look at his own decisions which lost us the game tonight....

Have to say gutted about the result shows there is a lot of work to be done..

Sack the lot of them.

How much effing room in the box?  Jeez........

Has something happened to Flint over the summer?

2 games sum up the Championship - width of a post on Saturday, width of a post tonight.

Box it off, close the lid - move on.

Some very strong contenders here. I think Husshen has the title in his grasp though. Let's hope someone doesn't snatch a last-minute win.

On the plus side I doubt we will ever have that many bad decisions made by players in 1 half ever again. The penalty miss, o neil mistimed tackle, rod dropping a clanger and some more schoolboy defending and game management with 30 seconds of the match left. That's a lot of bad things to all happen in 45 minutes of football and we got punished for every mistake.

Pff can I vote for myself? Not sure why people are particularly surprised that people are having emotional reactions though. You've gotta admit, that was a ******* annoying 35 minutes.

What I will say is without reading all posts on this thread is it seems you can't criticise players without being called all sorts, think a lot should grow up. When players deserve praise then give it to them when they don't then allow people to say it as it is

Sure but I think it's about perspective.  People tend to claim we're brilliant when we win and awful when we lose and the truth is we're a decent Championship side who are stronger than last season but still riding our luck a bit and are probably more mid-table than play-off contenders.  I also think the flipside to what you've said is that football supporters on internet forums sometimes feel they have impunity to criticise as harshly as they like without impunity but then seem a bit surprised when people criticise them harshly.  Ultimately if someone's not prepared to put up with abuse on the internet, they probably shouldn't be abusing people on the internet.

Why can't people have a meltdown given we have just lost a game in which we were 2-0 up?

Do you think it's acceptable to throw away a game like that?

Wish I could have the 'oh well' mentality of some people on here but unfortunately it gets to me a little too much!

In the history of Football I should imagine there's tens of thousands of occasions when teams leading by 2 have lost . Not unique to City at all . I'm sure there's been mistakes tonight by players and management , but get over it .

I'm sulking as well , gutted , pissed off , the dog better stay out of my way , but count to ten , it's 1 game of 46 .

You might not regret what you say , but what you say can make you look stupid .

**** it I'm off to bed .

Ha Ha not quite but with the squad he has now he needs to start looking at all the players and not just putting the same ones in each week because of who they are....

In fairness, made a few changes today.

He is still looking at all his jigsaw pieces and seeing what makes the best picture. Do not think he is sure yet. There are going to be some ups and downs on the way. Just one of those 'gutters' today. Not rocket science - need to stop giving away poor goals.

I can't comprehend the meltdown.

We're all gutted, but seriously? Some of these comments are outrageous.

Tomlin - There's a fair chance we'd be playing in league one without him. When he missed the penalty we were still winning 2-1. He is not responsible for the end result! Yes RO'D's error was a howler. Yes GO'N should have done better.

We're a work in progress. 13+ new players, all learning each other's games, having played less than 8 matches together. The knee jerk reaction to a new team is embarrassing.

We're already showing so much more promise than last season which constitutes progress.

Clearly that's not enough for those who suddenly expect us to be challenging for the top spots after a season spent fighting relegation. The comments talking about promotion and playoffs when we go 1-0 up is as clear an indication of the fickle nature of 'in the moment' comments.

Lets take a minute to recall where we were last year, where we are now. Less than a quarter of the season gone, and we've just lost to a team who have strengthened over the summer after being one result away from the Premiership last season.

i get the passion, and the in the heat of the moment disappointment. But let's save the pathetic abuse of the players who will be as gutted as any of us. Time to support, supporters.

I do like having a manager who will call it how he sees it in post-match interviews.  You get the sense he knows exaclty where we've gone wrong and we'll be working on it for the rest of the week.  I've not always had that sense with our managers...

Ah, missed that. Not too worried about it really, people do get sent off for 2 yellow cards, the second one looked soft to me. It's the defending for the 1st and 3rd goal that are actually worrying. The 2nd is just :grr:.

Seriously. Why? The guy just narrowly missed a pen. At the point he hit that post we were still 2-1 up against 10 men.

I could understand some flack if he'd completely skied it or tried a cheeky Zidane and been caught out, but as missed pens go, it was as good as they get.

tonights performance by ROD wasn't good enough, time for FF to have a go, healthy competition is a good thing.

That penalty was the killer.

3-1 and 11 v 10.

Tomlin has a lot to say about his own ability and he has to live up to it - he didn't tonight and he hasn't so far this season. He has to live up to his own hype and keep his gob shut. If he wants to talk the talk - walk the ******* walk.

But we threw it away anyway with bad defending after that poor penalty miss and resultant sending off of O'Neil - he will be missed more than any other player in the squad against Derby. But we have Korey Smith back which is a softener.

Back to the drawing board for LJ - we aint the done deal, long long way to go till we get anywhere near it, that game tonight proves it.

Devastating result which is reminiscent of last season (it seemed inevitable),  I hope it doesn't have too much effect on the players.

Great first half, shite second half for us - reverse of just about every other game this season.

LJ will be apoplectic with those players and rightly so - couldn't see out a 2-0 lead.

Bottled it.

Yep I agree,Has anyone ever missed a penalty before? I'm gonna google it

Well said, we are a far, far better team than we were last season and still learning, tonight is a hard lesson and a bitter pill but I think this team will learn from it, let's move on

What upsets me most about tonight's performance was that all the things which carried us through difficult games so far this season was the spirit and the self-belief when things went wrong. The last couple of games against Rotherham and Villa being prime examples. This time, things were going right, we seemed to get cocky so they then went wrong and as LJ said we just crumbled. It's the team that counts. Yes, individual players have made mistakes all through this season but until today the rest of the team rallied round and got a result. Tonight it was role reversal. The team that did that tonight were Sheffield Wed. We need to learn from it and then get over it.

They did lose 4-0 at home.

Yes but before the season started I wouldn't have had Barnsley to beat Wolves.

I'm hoping LJ does have the players in tomorrow, only to clear the air and really find out what went so wrong. These things can't be left or they will fester.

It seemed pretty even and then suddenly we were 2 up. Were we then too confident, sloppy?

Tomlin must have hit the pen well as it bounced off the post with power and went half way up the pitch, can't understand the hate he is getting. O'Donnell too was so safe last season, I can't believe people are calling for Frankie who lacks match practice and previously hasn't shone in the Championship anymore then O'Donnell has. O'Neil should have known better, but he is saying he got the ball.

I wasn't there. Let's hear from those who were.

We score as a team and concede as a team. Unfortunately along the way someone will hack it more than someone else along the way though occasionally.

Johnson's comments on radio appear to point more towards keeper. Saying it was interesting who didn't seem to handle the pressure and followed shortly up by referring to kicking out of play at that last moment.

End of the day though, some bad errors again. Bad defending for the first - why is Abraham having to do defense job there, Tomlin opportunity to possibly kill game missed, a risky challenge by O'Neil on a yellow and back to even numbers on pitch instantly, bad keeping for second followed by bad defending for third - Flint turned way too easy but pass wasn't closed off before and then failed to close that last moment out by kicking out of play and straight back to Wednesday.

They need to keep their heads up. We are well placed in table, could easily have more points too just from these last two games. They have to learn from this.

Let's not forget, some people on here DID say that O Neil had form for getting sent off and losing a game for his team. Pretty sure he's the main one Johnson's directing his comment at.

I don't think so, think O'Donnell must be one and probably Flint the other. O'Neil made a rash challenge but he didn't crumble by any means.

If Tomlin's penalty was an inch to the right then I'd say there would have been a 99.999% chance that we would have won that game.

Small moments have big impacts. It happens in football. We've benefited from them this season.

Let's support the boys because we were very close to ending the night in 5th place - we can't be too far off surely!?

What? They got battered 4-0 at home. We lost in the last minute when we had a penalty to go 3-1 up.

I meant the quote where he said there were some he was not so happy with.. Having not seen the game I couldn't really judge who he thought might have crumbled, although O Donnell seems an obvious choice.

No complaints with my post Robins 1998. What is your problem? Confidence is an important factors in team success and a result like this after Saturday with a two key defensive players making mistakes can really move a team in the wrong direction.
