One of my first games at the gate must have been 1967 ish. Fulham had just been telegated from the top flight with 3 or 4 aged internationals.  Johnny Haynes was one.  We thrashed them 4 - 0 that day.

If we want to press at the top of the division, we need a win tonight, though a draw would not be a bad result.

Prediction 2 - 1 to City. Snakey in the first half and a late goal from Milan.

Think it might have been 68/69 as they were 1st Div in season before. It was 6-0.

Que?

Snap Red Wizard - great minds and all that.

Spain went through a phase of playing no strikers innit. Just lots of creative midfielders buzzing around the place annoying the opposition defence. Seems quite similar to this with Pato, Brownhill, Reid etc.

Apologies if it was a rhetorical "que" :)

My concern with that team is keeping the ball up top if and when we're under pressure. Bobby isn't the hold up type so the ball could keep coming back at the defence. Once Milan comes on, no problem but our clearances to Bobby will have to be very accurate.

Can't like this enough, the first thing I thought. Might see the wingers REALLY high up.

Went to Craven Cottage back when Mark Gavin was in his brief hot streak. Remember him waltzing through their defence and I think we won. Was on an open terrace behind their goalie who was distinctly beefy - as he was reminded constantly. Made Tomlin look like a size zero. It was over the xmas holidays I think.

Boxing Day circa 1989 maybe

- I was there too.

Interesting selection to say the least, presumably LJ knows what he is doing

What a difference a year makes - this time last season he was clueless ( according to many on here)

Yep, 2-1 win in November '75.

I remember being high up in the open end right at the back and there being constant hassle with the police with literally scores of City fans - about 85 iirc. - being ejected throughout the match.

Masses of complaints in the EP on the Monday about the heavy handed police and the thought at the time was they were waiting for City determined to teach the fans a lesson after trouble at a pre season Anglo- Scottish match at the same ground a few months earlier.

Thanks for that Noggers. Your memory seems to have remained more intact than mine with the passing years. Don't recall any of the controversy, but I suppose as I was living in Brixton at the time the aftermath would have passed me by. I can remember that I was alongside the pitch rather than behind the goal, and consequently not in the midst of the majority of City fans. Let's hope there is nothing like that to spoil the occasion tonight.

LJ obviously wants the midfield five to break through in a way that he believes four wouldn't.

Clearlly a positive decision as both Taylor and Djuric are on the bench

Interesting move

Indeed! It's definitely an unusual starting 11. i doubt any of us saw that coming,

On paper it looks if Reid is a lone striker but with midfield pushing on to support him.

Itll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Guess so.

No surprise Taylor dropped, shame  Djuric isn't starting..

It must be too much for Djuric just yet, unfortunately.

Maybe LJ has come to the conclusion, after Saturday, that Taylor and Reid won’t work.

I’m guessing Brownhill will be closest to Reid. Not quite the drastic change some are making out.

I hope LJ isnt trying to be too clever here. One of the biggest pluses for me so far this season has been him learning from his mistakes and keeping it simple.

Fingers crossed its a master stroke.

One of the biggest pluses this season has been trying Reid as a forward - if anything is being 'too clever' that's it!

Liking this team and according to RB, seen as a tactical change of formation to combat Fulham's dominance in the middle of the park. Bench looking strong once again, if things are looking nasty I'd chuck on Djuric and Leko and try and get the big man to head another in. Hopefully though that won't be necessary, O'Dowda in good form and the rest very solid players. COYR!!

I'd have had Djuric in for Pack myself and pushed Patterson wide right.  I imagine this side is being picked to overload the midfield when not in possession, not sure that's a good idea but let's hope it works.

Also guess they don't want to rely on Djuric having to last 90 mins should scoreline/potential injuries require it. Better to keep building up his return process if required.

Since I cannot hear the guy, what was the gist of what was said??

Not sure about the extent of Baker’s knee injury just yet, hope to have him fit for Saturday.

Mentioned about freshening it up and having the players to press Fulham. They have a lot of possession in their own half and feel we could exploit any weaknesses in that.

Football is NOT dumping it long. The sooner we understand the better.

Actually, it's a tactic used in many cases to stretch the play and open up space in the midfield. If their back 4 get caught out once then they'll be more hesitant to push higher up.

I don't see this as a ' dumping it long' formation if that's what you're implying. Control it in the middle, pass it out wide, have Pisano and Bryan overlapping (both are fantastic at that) and either float it in for Reid or one of the midfielders to get a touch on or cut back inside for a bit of a penalty box scramble. Either works for me if it gets us goals!

At least Fulham won't know what to expect. It could be 4-4-1-1, 4-5-1, 4-3-3, 4-6-0. If we're not certain what the formation will be Fulham won't be. + Looking at their forums Fulham have not changed tactics or systems at any point this season, whether in front, behind or facing strong or weak opposition. So LJ should definitely know their game.

I dont know much about football but... Could this be construed as "parking the bus"?

Bizarre line up. Fulham do like to outnumber teams in the middle of the park. Maybe trying to keep it 0-0 before bringing on Duric? Strange one.

I think your'e right tbh, not a strange one though. Makes sense especially with Famara out and Milan not quite ready to start

No chance of a win tonight with that line up , little Lee playing for the point then going for the win v Cardiff , I predict a 2-0 loss tonight ....

If we are playing with a false 9 then its actually very attacking and might work. CB's are used to picking up the striker/s but with a false 9 that player isn't often there. It relies on running from deep for the F9 and the attacking midfielders and with Patts, COD and Brownhill. The F9 stays pretty central and creates space for wider players as well as them, in turn, making space for him. e.g. If Bobby is the false 9 and keeps dropping back deep the Fulham CB either stand their ground and give us acres of space to play in or (more likely) the step up into the space and end up playing a high line. Now they are really susceptible to balls in behind.

If that is how we intend to play then it should actually be pretty exciting to watch.

Surprised at the line-up, musn’t let Fulham dictate the play or it could be over before we get chance to bring on reinforcements, must have faith in the manager though

If we have F9 then we also have a lot of bodies in midfield when necessary that hopefully results in more possession and more control of the game.

4-1-4-1 but when we attack it'll be of a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 with Brownhill, Pato, O'Dowda pushing up and supporting attacks. Don't see any problem this, just that some people like to be negative. Fulham will have the majority of the ball but it's about staying compact and countering quickly when we get it. Most teams actually defend in 4-1-4-1 nowadays

Need to get on the front foot straight from kick off.

Since the international break it has sounded like the opposition have done to us what we were doing earlier in the season. Not sure how our pressing game will be with this selection/formation, but Fulham are the type of team at this level who can dominate a game if we let them.

Clearly a nice move to counter their fullbacks & disrupt the way they boss possession.

Pretty sure it ain't gonna work though...very defensive and likely to bring us far too deep...could be a dicking on the cards.

we'll see , but Djuric not fit enough too start who else goes up front. If we went with the two little un's the ball would keep coming back as it did Saturday and with their extra man in midfield we would be under constant pressure.
