Bristol City Women

Excellent performance today. We were on the attack from the outset and dominated Palace throughout the 90 minutes. An excellent week for the team and promotion is now ours to lose. On today's performance, that ain't gonna happen.

Interesting to note that Selhurst Park is hosting the Conti Cup Final today. Presumably the authorities don't think this will be detrimental. Do Palace Women often play at Selhurst?

COYR

Not that often. Palace fans I know are annoyed that both games overlap...

Sounds a great day! This might prove to have cracked the title race this season. I know there are many games left but this weekend will have made a big dent in London City's hopes. That's two defeats in the last three matches for them.

On to Durham next week...

Well done City Women.

No complacency next week as Durham are tough opponents on their own patch.

Beat Coventry United 5-1 today but I think the long travel could affect them next weekend...

Great results today.City and London City still to play each other again I believe.

Yep, in two weeks time in a rescheduled fixture. Same day as City men are away at Swansea. Think there's some overlap but the London City game is live on FA Player

How many games left Shahan?

Bit of a random thing to drop at the end of this interview that today was Lauren Smith's 50th game in charge at the club. I'd have loved to have known that beforehand...

Lauren always looks such a happy person, win or lose she`s always smiling. She must be overjoyed with how things are going.

I'm trying to collate her record over that tenure. Reckon it will be better than most (if not all!) previous coaches, and a promotion will round things off nicely.

Highlights below. Full game is available on FA Player. Saw/heard it back earlier today, and I am not sure if it's the acoustics inside the ground, but everyone that made noise home & away (including me) sound really well!

Is it my imagination watching this and the 2 results against Man City in the cup games that is there quite a gulf between the WSL and the Championship? If they get promoted what are the chances of staying up? Would it require a lot of recruitment? Do we know if SL is willing to back them appropriately?

Not meaning to sound too negative, just trying to understand the context. The same issues would apply to the current men’s team if they got promoted from the Championship to the Premier League - only a few players would make it at that level, so we would be dependent on recruiting a significant number of new players.

There is a gap, probably getting bigger each season as the WSL is increasingly dominated by the Premier big guns. Would require investment if promoted. The Man City results were probably a bit unfair on the team as we didn't play our strongest 11 in either game. If we get up, it will be a scrap with the bottom teams, but you can't be scared of success.

In answer to my other post, I have Lauren Smith's record as:

P-49   W-29  D-7  L-13

Win Percentage of 51.9%, or 88pts from a theoretical 147 (that's 59.8%) overall. Must be a lot of coaches who would like to be at that level.

I'm missing a game from somewhere but it still illustrates her tenure well. Could it be she will be head-hunted for more senior positions, like previous City coaches I could mention (but won't)?

If she's won 29 games out of 49, surely that's a win % of 59.18%. She's also won 94 points out of 147 which would be 63.94%.

You're right, HM. I blame a recent Windows update that has also wiped out my calendar.

Hard fought first half with City shading it and worthy of the half time lead. Second half more fluid and it could been more than the 2 goals. At the end, a solid victory.

Completely agree, two different halves. Wasn't expecting to see the amount of Durham fans (& flags) down too considering their travels; attempted a singing contest though.

Great to see Aspin finally make her return, and nearly getting a goal herself at the very end. Wasn't sure about the referee today...

Not sure what happened in the first half with Abi Harrison & Georgia Robert. Very strange incident where the referee stopped play for two or three minutes, no foul had happened or anything. Assume something must have been said.

On the pitch, another win after initially finding the opposition a difficult nut to crack. Like Oxford in the Cup, took till first half stoppage time to score then ended up winning by a few. Improved the GD again over London City today; next week looks massive in respect of the whole season.

From what I've overheard from some people since (although it may need verifying), at first seemed like a Durham player was mocking Harrison's accent, but then apparently something of a vitriolic/racist nature may have been said instead. I'll expect the clubs/FA to follow that up...

Yes, there did seem to be some tetchiness in the first half that was not football related, but the ref (at length) quelled it. Second half was better in terms of output and positivity, not totally unrelated to Palmer's appearance after the break. And yes, good to see Brooke out and back in action too (and yes, again, unsurprisingly looked a little rusty but also showed some class).

Overall a game that was not so pretty or spectacular, but a deserved win ground out against an obdurate Durham side. At this stage of the season the results will live longer than the performance and so we have inched ahead of London City, which is crucial as the next fixture is at Princes Park.

I thought Ela Powell was liveliest today, particularly in the first half, and Rachel Furness was able to snuff out opposition moves and then move it forwards to set up attacks. Abi Harrison was the usual handful either in attack or from midfield. She is also central to the huddles and we are benefiting from her international experience.

Flowing football was difficult as Durham's back four were on their toes. However, when we made it into the penalty box we had a few good opportunities; it also has to be said that the opponents almost sneaked a goal early on and that would have changed the game entirely. Fortunately the City defence was alert and when the shots came in there were lots of bodies in the way - a good sign of defending from a team perspective.

So on to next week. Not the title decider it might have been but a vital game none the less. Then there will only be one more home game at the HPC. Gosh, doesn't the end of the season jump up quickly!

COYR!

Some good news ahead of next weekend

Good spot. I'd have thought she might be someone who would make a good signing IF our women stay top and get promoted,

This was briefly referenced at the end of Lauren's post match interview, but even I wasn't aware of this stat - I remember our last loss in the league (and only one this season) was against Birmingham in November

The women were in at the RHPC today

Listened to Rachel Furness' interview last night on Sound of the City with Geoff Twentyman.

She said that the club have a new training schedule, and now come in on Mondays as opposed to Tuesdays - as well as coming in on Fridays instead of Thursdays. Still train on Wednesdays & Saturdays.

Segment starts at 35:27

I don’t follow this thread religiously but I haven’t seen much discussion recently of the club’s strategy with the women’s team. Does anybody have any inside knowledge?

Clearly, enough has been done to make them strong candidates for promotion back to the top flight. That said, the gap to the likes of Man City seems now to be much bigger than when they were last there. How will they cope if they go up and what changes could we expect?

I don’t know what the comparative budgets are like. How much would it take to make the team, say, an established middle-of-the-table top flight team? It would seem to be a good objective, given the prestige this would bring to BCFC overall, if it fits in with SL’s plans.

Again, what, if any, are the financial constraints? Is there any FFP or wage cap? I imagine the biggest clubs are now hoovering up the top players, but is there a place at the table for a club of our size? Eleven of the Super League teams are now associated with EPL clubs. Is that how it is destined to stay?

Not for myself but are they running a CATS coach on Sunday?

Yes, though apart from the SC&T tweeting about it I'm surprised that the club isn't promoting it better on the OS

I have no 'inside knowledge" but would say that the WPL falls into 3 sections; top four - head & shoulders above the rest, middle four, bottom four - fighting to avoid bottom place. IF we go up, it would only take relative modest investment in new players to have a fair chance against the other 3 "bottom four" to avoid the drop. IF we can stay up and benefit from extra TV revenue etc, then with more investment we could challenge the middle four. Realistically, a bit like the MPL, the top four are way beyond a team of our size.

So nothing for this Sundays top of the table match?

Clashes with the mens fixture at Swansea I suppose

Given how this Sunday's fixture at London City Lionesses was a rearranged fixture, and the Supporters Club & Trust are trialling two coaches with the club for the games against Charlton last October & Southampton next weekend - there were no plans initially for London City away. Also, the game is live on FA Player

Some of this was covered at the fans forum last Wednesday. I recorded it & am in the process of writing a transcript for Since 71, the website I often contribute to. However due to work, time & other constraints, getting round to it isn't easy. And as for 11 of the 12 WSL clubs being associated with a Premier League team - that doesn't always guarantee success. Look at Spurs, for example, who haven't won a league game since October & have just sacked their manager
