REPORT: BIRMINGHAM CITY 2-0 BRISTOL CITY

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH 2012

City suffered a sixth straight defeat as Birmingham ran out comfortable winners at St Andrew’s.

Chris Burke opened the scoring just before the hour mark after the hosts had squandered a series of chances, before Marlon King put the result beyond doubt with a well-taken second.

Blues manager Lee Clark will feel the margin of victory should have been greater, not least after an excellent penalty save from Dean Gerken low to his right to deny Peter Lovenkrands when substitute Martyn Woolford brought down Burke in stoppage time.

Club have announced that Aimee Palmer, club captain, has left BCWFC by mutual consent.

https://twitter.com/bristolcitywfc/status/1652968603577384961

While her inswinging corners were a sight to behold (think I saw her score directly from three of them), her injuries this season curtailed her influence on the side. Still one of the players I love to watch and she'll be missed.

Good luck Aimee.

I know it's the end of the season so some departures would be announced. Wasn't expecting Aimee to be one of them!

I remember when she signed her new one-year contract during last season, there was a clause that an extension could be triggered if WSL promotion was sealed. So she leaves technically as a free agent.

I was at the Birmingham game yesterday, and she (alongside Elysia Boddy) were sat in the away section - a few rows in front of us. At the time I thought it seemed strange that they weren't in or near the dugout (which for some reason was closer to the home sections side, and Birmingham's was closer to ours...). But perhaps moments like this (and not being named captain in recent fixtures) puts some things into perspective.

Aimee has tweeted the below:

And the exodus continues with Chloe Bull, Lia Cataldo, Jodie Hutton and Lily Greenslade all released too.

Surprised that both Hutton & Cataldo are going, that leaves us a bit short on the left hand side. I'd have kept Cataldo, I think. Greenslade couldn't force her way into the first team at Championship level so her cards were already marked & Chloe Bull's been absent a bit lately though again, I'd have probably offered her another 12 months.

Completely agree with you. Although Chloe Bull has, as you've shared, got a new job now with the FAW.

Can only hope their replacements will be what the club need to compete & stay in the WSL - not that most of these released players couldn't

Does anyone know if Lia Cataldo is related to Vito Cataldo ?

I don't know who that is. I've see some of her family at home games at the RHPC & of all the relatives I know (of), none had that name.

Currently, she still appears on the Bristol Sport shop website with George Tanner...

My photos from Sunday. The seating behind the dugouts at St Andrews is...interesting.
Had a bit of an adventure before the game. Was told by the steward at one car park (where the (Bristol Bears) team bus was) to park in the Kop Stand car park, then drove there & the steward there said it was home fans only, so then found street parking somewhere else.

And then had to find a ticket office to get my ticket reprinted as it never came in the post. Was hoping for the football to put me in a better mood ?

Nice to get everyone that featured on the poster to sign my copy (apart from Lily Greenslade, who was with Plymouth yesterday...)

I used to play football with Vito when growing up in Nailsea.  He was a very good player and ended up as an apprentice at Sunderland from memory.  Just wondered as it is an unusual surname.

I don't think we have been near ruthless enough. Jaz Bull, Vicki Bruce, Woolley not in my opinion good enough for WSL.

Off subject but a crowd of over 60k at the Emirates tonight for the CL SF.

As I live in London I decided to go and it was great..

Arsenal very unlucky to lose in the 119th min. Shame but does make me a bit nervous for next season!

Really sad news that Aimee Palmer is not going to be part of the future. A hugely influential player and the heart of the departing season's midfield. Hope she will enjoy whatever she will do (coaching?) and the club will be forever indebted for her efforts. I remember her coming through as a youngster and mixing it with the WSL of the day, thinking she could be part of the new generation. It was a circuitous route but one City have benefited from.

Also sad to see the others leave, Cataldo especially. Although not quite such a higher level of involvment on gamedays, they were nevertheless part of a Championship winning side.

We sit and wait for more news, which I suspect will be happening over the summer if it's regarding new arrivals.

fair point I don't know, I thought it was commonplace outside of the WSL to only issue 1 year contracts, but I could be wrong.

Attended fans forum at the club. Got impression very few were on multi year contracts. My guess Harrison and Bentley at a minimum. Unlikely to too be many more.

Interesting to know

But I would assume there would be lots of player movements if this was the case all through the league

I assume the top end clubs maybe offer better deals?

I'd guess better deals at the tip of the WSL, loyalty below.

Abi Harrison signed a new one year contract in March 2022, with the option of an extension if WSL promotion was secured. Aimee Palmer was also offered the same terms...

Interesting, so Bruce, Bull & Woolley can all be released June/July. From the games I have seen I would say they are each not strong enough to compete in the WSL...

Is the expectation that the club will invest significantly now to build a side that can compete at the top level, or will the promoted team be relied on?

From recent fans forum, will be a mixture of both. There will be an influx of experience coupled with a desire to maintain the youth set up which has provided a fair proportion of the Championship team.

Firstly thanks to @shahanshahan and @phantom for the running updates on this thread.

Living abroad, it's been great to keep upto date with the Ladies wonderful season.

Hopefully with crowds of 5000+ and hopefully more, then investment will be made in the team to keep it up, evolve and belong.

Surely it's only a matter of time before the WSL is screened on Sky / Fox etc - every game, every week.

The attendances are pretty compelling for the broadcasters to recognise the obvious demand to watch these matches.

It will be a struggle obviously - but with 4 or 5 inspired signings, maybe, just maybe, the ladies can stay up.

Not too sure, you have to think League One & most of League Two average attendance wise is probably much higher than that and it's rarely ever televised.

But then the WSL may be cheaper to buy rights for I suppose. So less in the way of getting it on TV.

Sad to see her go. Didn't get a lot of game time towards the end of the season (sometimes not in the squad at all). I still recall her & Aimee Palmer sat in the stands near us at the Birmingham game, far away from the team dugout.

Think I recall Lauren Smith saying at the fans forum that she was under contract going into the new season...

"City Women General Manager Grace Williams is leaving the club to pursue other opportunities."

Seems a bit strange that City didn't mention what she was off to do, unless she didn't tell them.

Why wow?  I don’t visit the website anymore. Poorly, incorrect articles all the time. When you add constant stories about the women’s team that I have no interest in, I don’t waste my time.

I understand people do want to read about it but if it was all in one place might be easier for them to find?!

So, you don’t visit the website due to poor, incorrect articles and accept people visit the website to read articles on the women’s team even though you don’t waste your time so not really sure what point you’re trying to make

you also suggest the women should have they’re own website so their articles are ‘easier for them to find’ yet it seems to be mattWSM that struggles with finding the right articles

very sillybilly comments here.

I am just saying to keep the Bristol sport teams on seperate menus (i meant menu not website actually) as the city website at the moment is about city women which not everyone wants to read, so instead they could make their choice of sport/team from a menu.

Wish I'd not mentioned it haha

It’s the ‘Bristol city’ website……the last time I looked, the women are bristol city. If you don’t want to read about it, don't click on the article

All websites will have articles that people may not be interested in, they don’t go creating new websites just because Matt from Weston doesn’t want to read about it

I think the club definitely knew, but it would be up to the new club themselves to then announce. That's the common practice, anyway...

You're welcome @The Constant Rabbit! Thought I should help revive the thread, and it's great to see many others contribute to it too.

Which country are you in, as I saw you refer to Fox (which I think there are different versions of internationally)?

Also, it's "Women" not "Ladies". When I first started following City Women (and subsequently women's football), someone explained it to me that the term "ladies" is seen as outdated in a sports context, and said that we wouldn't call men in sport "gentlemen" by comparison. Although, outside of sports "ladies & gentlemen" is still used

Agree, I absolutely hate the word ladies, it's city women.

Jazz Bull interview on the latest episode of "The Women's Soccer Show" podcast (it's a British/American co-production hence the title). Pretty cool interview about her life, career, and playing for City despite most of her family all being fans of the team in blue & white...

Segment starts 24:00
