Bristol City v Birmingham City Match Day 16

Oooh, hello!

Yes. I'm back. I deduced that the majority preferred the more technical aspect given by Fevs and with Hav still in the honeymoon phase with Mrs Hav, I stopped posting with the intention to fill in whenever Dave is unavailable. So here I am. The 6th most popular female OTIBer. Like your uncle's fart after a Sunday roast, it lingers...

So what have I missed? City are doing okish, COD was shit but now good again, Cotts and LJ got jobs, Fam might sign his new contract, Hunt is a good vice captain etc...

Standard then. Just the post Christmas slump and banana skin game in the FA cup to look forward to. Classic City.

On to today...

Beeerrrrrrrminhimmmm (H) are on a winless run, most recently losing to Barnsley but also drawing to current top dogs Bournemouth. So I think a 1-1 draw can be expected.

We shall see.

As above, love we've got so many and different styles of these threads. All positive contributions that are good to read. Sometimes to share the emotion, others to understand what's actually going on. Think we all love having the choice better than the opposite. Keep posting yall

Me too. I really like the tactical analysis too, and find it way more insightful than anything I read or see from any journalist or pundit. Well done @Davefevs

If we could keep the emotional reactions in a separate thread that would be perfect.

One match day thread for those looking for match updates and factual updates and assessments and insights of our play from those of a balanced disposition.

Another thread for the knee jerkers, player scapegoaters, bed wetters, only-comment-when-we’re-losing-ers, FFS’ers when we concede a goal and we’re the worst team ever and worse than LJ and DH is clueless even though there’s 87 minutes left to play-ers.

If that could be arranged please?

Sending that wish list to the Big Man at the North Pole as we speak.

He does ask if you've been a good boy this year Fredrick. He will have to check his list first though. ?

This is exactly the type of games that we need to be winning! Looked at our home form and the teams we have beaten are in the bottom 6. Hoping for at least 4pts from the next 2 games but we shall see because it's rarely easy at home.

Interesting fixtures today because it's top half at home to bottom half!

Unfortunately these are exactly the sort of games that we’ve struggled in recently. I could be wrong, but don’t think we’ve beaten Brum at home in the last 4 attempts?

I’ve not seen them play this season, but assuming they are still more of a physical/direct team rather than a passing/possession team then this is exactly the type of opposition that we struggle against, particularly at home (see Millwall, Wigan, Preston etc for other examples).

Doubt very much that today’s game will be particularly pleasing on the eye, but for me 3 points would be a sign of progress however they come.

Don’t have that winning feeling about this. Maybe because it’s Birmingham at home!

Our record v Brum(H) the last 9 games...

7 losses 1 draw 1 win

If I had to predict it would be 1-1, probably with us going behind and getting a scabby equaliser...

I must admit I preferred the match day threads that started with a potted history of the town in question. But then I’m a history and QI fan!

Who did those, was it Havanatopia?

 J. R. Tolkien grew up in and around Birmingham , it was the city landscape and surrounding countryside that provided some of the inspiration for  The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

‘The Shire’, home to the Hobbits was inspired by the fields and mill at Sarehole, a village now absorbed into Birmingham’s suburbs.

Jill Richardson, (the daughter of the owner of the Crossroads Motel), Meg Richardson. led quite a life  she was married five times - once bigamously - was a drug addict, an alcoholic and had a baby with her stepbrother.

Wow. Never thought it got that bad. Wasn't last seasons game the one we scored in the first minute of something, only to lose? I remember The Chief running from the half way line with the ball toward the open end (maybe it was the Atyeo by then) and smashing the ball into the top corner, for a 2-0 home win I think. Those were the days.

I took the plunge and put us down for a 4-1 home win on the skybet super 6 game. I'll probably be 5 goals out.

I’ve always preferred that both threads are kept separate.

I think any of your tactical / scouting review is always worthy if it’s own thread

in sure its of interest to many , especially those that are keen to understand more about the game , and the game generally as much as that particular fixture

Worth having a pinned thread to store just them for easy access for those that like to read them

Why sterile?  Is that your opinion?  If so, fine....scroll on by.  You’ll be glad there isn’t a preview this week.

Sterile as in clean and free from germs. In this case it's the contamination of having well thought out and researched information from yourself contaminated by people yelling about individual passes. I think it doesn't mix well and forum is better when it's split due to ease of finding the content I want. Yes that's my opinion.

I like the threads. and I'm not happy there isn't one. They're often useful to me.

Sterile ?

With due respect as somebody who admits to no great background in playing / coaching / analysis (As many) I’d have thought you would find it very interesting and a big help in understanding some new bits and pieces

Ive been around and involved in the game for 40 odd years at various levels and still find I’m learning , especially to keep up with modern trends

The use of graphics (which Dave uses very professionally ) are a massive help / aide

I appreciate some don’t want to understand too deeply but I’d recommend this sort of stuff to anyone because I found , when I had to analyse and understand the game it took my enjoyment to a different level

I find the hardest thing now is to keep up with modern tactical trends and why I’ve enjoyed the previews

All IMHO of course

Hope we get a better performance today, but will be happy with however we play, so long as we get 3 points.  Not sure whether we will go 532, 442 or 433 today, but it seems that Dean is liking 433 at the moment.

A lot will depend on who is fit, but I'm hoping to see Nagy and Bakinson in the centre of midfield and that would probably require a shift back to 442.

Been concerned about the form of JD too, so perhaps Rowe will slot into his spot.

Jack Hunt back at RB with Kalas and Vyner in the centre.

Would suggest Semenyo should play up front, but not sure about which of Diedhiou, Wells or Martin should partner him.

2-1 to City, I feel, but it's hard to predict with way we are grinding out games at the moment.

Interesting game today, imo, as it’s one we’re probably expected to win albeit we have a shocking record v Brum (2 wins and 3 draws in the last 16). What I would like to see is a step up in the level of performance from recently and with O’Dowda firing the other night, Bakinson ready to go again, Nagy on form, Brunt putting in a second half on Tuesday that resembled a professional footballer and Wells looking like he has a goal or two in him we should be approaching it with confidence.

Totally agree- much as I love to pull Dave's leg about the depth of analysis- It does give me a new dimension to what I'm watching/listening to and about 100x more useful than a brief media overview.I think it will be even better when we can FINALLY get to see the game from the stands. Jeez, how I miss match day .

451/4231....no San Jose or Jutkiewicz in the eleven.

Zak Vyner got a striker in Hogan who will give him a serious test in tracking movement (like Pukki).  One to watch how him and Kalas pass-on runners today.  Hogan is one of the best at falling between two markers.

Sam Bell is on the bench. Apart from being a striker and the son of (we've got) Mickey Bell, does anyone have any information about the lad, because I can't find a player profile on the o/s?

How will they line-up, Dave?

He’s a striker & Mickey Bell’s son, does that help?

They may have had a mediocre season so far, but like nearly all Championship squads, there is no shortage of decent players among that lot. Jutkiewicz always seems to do damage against us. Glad he's not starting, but look out for him off the bench after an hour.

Colin and Dean were very good signings from Brentford - by Harry, I believe. Kieftenbeld we tried to sign at one point - reportedly. Hogan, agree absolutely with that comment. Friend is very experienced. Like I say, they have good players...

You can bet your bottom dollar that they manage to lift their game against us .

Seeing Mickey Bell’s lad on the bench makes me feel ancient.

Anyway, good luck to the kid.

After our discussion about home grown strikers I have a quick tester for you (You will nail it straightaway ;) )

Seeing Bell in the Failand video , in looks , build and style of play - does he remind you of anyone ? (Hopefully goes on to be better)
