Yup agreed. Shame it took us 2 years to replace him- but we now have!

Ona side note, and not start comparisons, but Pack was very good for Cardiff today I though, the trade mark reverse pass for their goal especially- sadly with their team, most of the game is I’ve this head.

Back to James to finish- Superb.

I thought Matty out Packed Pack today. Marlon did his best work in space where as Matty was cool under pressure. Might be rose tinted and under a massive Natch influence, but I wouldn't swap them.

Superb signing & finally we have a presence in there. Can do the lot & looks quality & can see why Nige made him his number 1 target. On a side note thought King had his best game.

Kings clearance off the line was as good as a goal as he was the only one who anticipated it otherwise it’s 1-1 in the first half

Agree. Though I'd say everything we've missed since Brownhill left. I thought we should have been looking to bring James in on loan when Brownhill was sold.

It's great that we managed to sign him since he had such a good season injury free last season. Obviously largely down to James and Pearson having a close relationship. No doubt many clubs would have been interested.

Swansea and Coventry for two.

Immense.

Has a little bit of everything, mobile, uses the ball very well, wins challenges, finds space, available for a pass, always goal side when we are defending.

Really rate him, only 30 last month, looks a great acquisition.

Think I recall hearing someone (Pearson? Rennie?) saying that James is effectively a "young thirty" as he's played so few games over the last few years.

Could have a few more years in him than we might expect, too.

I think Matty James is a very good player but we need to be fair and admit that Marlon was an excellent servant for us for a number of seasons.

Marlon was never the most mobile central midfielder and his legs have pretty much gone now, but he served us well.

Matty James is very comfortable on the ball and can back it up physically, which is something we have really missed in the last couple of seasons.

There were lots of times where the ball was being headed or flicked back and forth. Quite a few times, James managed to bring the ball down and pass it to someone in space. Not exactly Hollywood passes but real composure and experience to regain control.

Class act. Early days but the most effortlessly natural footballing central midfielder we have had since Zico Hartley.

Will be huge for us.

Pearson was possibly the only reason he joined. Shows the value of a respected and credible manager.

Thought Pack was anonymous tbf. But anyone in a Cardiff midfield would be whilst watching ur centre backs just smash it past you 60 yards all game.
What a horrendous style they have. Not suited to Pack at all.
Would hate to watch that shite most weeks!

It seemed to me that Pack just seemed intent on making those reverae passes he has become famous for, "giving them the eyes" as Johnson used to say. The problem is that if you do it as often as he is now, it becomes the expected pass and loses it's effectiveness.

Suits Pack perfectly as his legs have gone. A good servant but seriously over rated buy a number on here.

No he had left Barnsley before they really took off.

He left Barnsley and went to Coventry in the January transfer window.

Looking forward to Wyscout updating today’s fixtures.  James should feature pretty prominently in terms of volume of actions.

You're having a laugh mate James is streets ahead of Marlon Pack.

I never said he wasn't.

But you obviously don't appreciate what certain players bring to a team.

My impression of Pack was that he looks like a complete gypo. In desperate need of a hair cut and a good shave.

On vaguely the same subject was Flint wearing an Alice band or do I need a visit to the Opticans.

Unfair to detract away from MJ’s performance on this thread.

so let’s agree to disagree on that one and enjoy the Win!

Be interested in seeing that. He certainly doesn’t play like a 30 year old. How many years did we give him?

Pack was a decent player for us, but James has those PL qualities that stand out.

Thought Pack was decent today. That little no-look reverse will have LJ purring into his Malbec watching Quest tonight.

Went on record as saying Marlon was “world-class” at that.

Hindsight maybe bestsight but keep Pack and don’t sign Nagy?

Not sure it’s hindsight, selling the CM you built a system around seemed a “bit” stupid at the time didn’t it?

Said it before...he's a Rolls Royce of a player at this level.  Excellent signing.

Couldn’t agree more, he is the pivot of the team and I have been mightily impressed with how he dictates the play, gets stuck in and can also pick a pass

Made a huge difference. Just need that consistently??

20 minutes doesn’t excuse some of his recent performances but it’s a start.

Thought James did well today. Was awful against West Brom as was Williams but was ok at Cov and better today.

James was the least of our worries as was one of the players that significantly improved as game went on.    I do question his mobility but we are a better side with him in it with what we have available.

His mobility first half was the part of the problem. Not the main, as like others said, the majority of the players were not in the game.

Joe Allen was running the show.

1st half…everyone pretty much poor.  Swansea CMs splitting wide meant a lot of running (unnecessary running  imho) for too many players.  We never really got close.

2nd half…I though James was excellent. Interceptions, picking up loose balls, passing it simply.

I thought Vyner and Scott (despite some misplaced passes) played well first half.

They carried that on in the second with Pring also playing well.

Thought James did ok first half tbh, but better in the second half - very reliable for us and rarely has a bad game imo, consistent 6 or 7.
