Chris Martin

He's no world beater but nor is he the complete donkey that sections of our fanbase make him out to be either.

He's a useful Championship striker who needs managing carefully so as not to be overworked and run into the ground, which admittedly is easier said than done with our resources up front.

There's a very (ahem) vocal young woman who sits behind us in the South Stand who expresses her opinion constantly throughout the game.  She has been known to shout "SCORE" at random points of the game - I'm glad she does because I don't think that the players thought about that.

Anyway, every now and again, she shouts "GO ON CHRIS MARTIN, THE LEAD SINGER OF COLDPLAY".  I'm confused as I'm sure Chris Martin is - why is she cheering on someone who isn't even in the ground?

Thought you'd like to read that even though it doesn't say anything about him as a player...

Agreed. Chris Martin is a great pro but brimming with class every week he ain't. However, great pro's are what we need right now with the budgetary constraints Steve has asked Nige to work to. We have to take the rough with the smooth and accept that for the game we got at Millwall we will then get a finish at the death today that had Mitrovic buried it we would have been saying "that's what £60K per week gets you at this level".

He had some chances in the first half, then he seemed to disappear for a while in the second half...until he made a powerful run on the left, who led to a chance: after that, he created problems to the Posh defence, and a good header was followed by the goal some minutes later.  :worship2:

I still think we should not overuse him (one of the reasons why I would have given Bell a chance in the 2nd half), but today he made the difference again.

Had three headers saved in the second half too.

Not bad for a ‘Shit’ near-34 year old striker who’s returned from a serious injury!

Still 32.

Really chuffed for him today.

I have to admit when I saw that Wells was not fit, and that Martin was starting, especially after Millwall where he really didn't play well I was worried, but what a way to ram that down my throat, class finish.

In an ideal world he wouldn’t be playing as much, but that’s certainly not his fault.

We have signed much worse for higher fees (I acknowledge his wages are probably top end for us, though).

Clever. experienced striker who has 4 goals in 11 games & already won us some vital points.

Be great if Wells was back after the international break to share the load but he’s doing a sound job overall.

I`m not sure they are - wasn`t it length of contract that allegedly swung it for us? Probably on a decent wedge though for all that.

Anyone in the away end catch his song? I couldn't quite make out the lyrics, but knew it was to the tune of Magic - Pilot.

Didn’t hear it - had wondered if there was a song for him  …

similarly shouldn’t we have a song for kalas .?!

Everyone can see what he can’t do but it’s not always obvious what he can do. His strengths are holding the ball and laying it off to midfield players.  Unfortunately, we’ve got a lot of midfield players who hardly ever score and don’t run into attacking positions to take advantage of his positional play.

Joe Williams has only scored 2 goals in 102 league appearances. He’s a good player but not a regular scorer

The way he tore past their defender today, just before the goal, suggests he's not as slow as some thought.

Well played today though Chris Martin! ?

Objectively (and less divisive!) I would say the truth is more likely that he started the season well, had a few below par games and then today was (for me, a recent critic) man of the match.

I thought his levels dropped in QPR, Preston and certainly Millwall game. But much better today. I think Weimann had another quiet game. I wonder if Wells gets back in up top with Martin when he is back.

Please get Wells in and that fraud weimann out. Enough. he is a nothing a shirt ,a player that gets in the way ,he has tons of energy yes but  but its usually in the wrong place and I feel we can get a much. Better fit in our team than the undroppable weimann.never heard him mentioned on  commentary today and many commterys before there are  a lot of those days. Commitment yes energy yes but scores a couple.now and again but for me is a player that's finished. Doesn't fit anywhere in the side ,not a forward not a winger he offeres Nil apart from energy ..dissappears constantly, I feel we just accommodated him in team due to his running which on the eye looks good but achieve minimal for team.for me he is a great runner and battler but a  non producer in the bigger picture..I would be looking to bring in someone to replace him ASAP. We carry him most games. In my opinion. Always felt this way. ⁸

Said in the week that Martin needs midfield runners around him.  Last couple of games, James has had to babysit Bakinson (bit harsh, but it’s constrained him) and today with a quiet King alongside him we saw James getting around the box into shooting positions…in fact it was him laying off to Martin for Tanner’s goal.

We have 3 strikers who bring different strengths and weaknesses to the side. 4 in fact what with Semenyo when he's fit again.

Some games Wells will be preferable to Martin. Some games you might have Semenyo and Weimann in wider roles and Martin or Wells central, other games might be Weimann central as the '1', 3-5-2/4-4-1-1...Wells or Martin dependent on various factors.

Talking of Martin, despite his strong start he will still need managing carefully moving forward IMO. Not quite wrapping up in cotton wool but a good mix of rest and conditioning in the next fortnight, the International break.

He seems to have an amazing ability to read the flight of the ball, I am constantly amazed at how many times he wins a ball in the air without jumping for it. That gives him such a firm base in a challenge it helps him hold off much bigger players.

It’s interesting that Darren Ferguson also thought he was good. He stated he was a handful throughout, and he had that quality and caused them problems. (His comments on the equivalent of our Bristol live)

when someone of his pedigree says that you have to suspect it’s right. (Not going off topic but always surprised he has not done more as a manager)

However with Saturday, midweek, Saturday there’s no way he could last a full season, bound to come out at some stage..

Hes a midfielder , he doesn’t have to score . He got a assist today. That’ll do

It doesn’t matter if there is only one midfielder who doesn’t score often, but it does matter if the entire midfield is bereft of goals, which was the point I was making. To be successful a team can’t just have a couple of good forwards. Most of the other players must chip in with a few goals here or there. That isn’t going to happen with the current crop of midfielders, good as they are.
Joe Williams - 2 league goals in 102 appearances

H N M - 2 in 78

James - 10 in 78

Semenyo - 8 in 93 (only 2 at Championship level)

The best, in terms of scoring are Weimann with 57 in 335, though a lot have come when he’s played as a forward, and O’Dowda with 57 in 335

There has been a lot of talk about the need to sign a 20 goals per season. We do, but we also need to sign a goal scoring midfielder. Put this new player with Williams, HNM, and James and we’d have a good midfield

This.

Issue is just that his acceleration is non-existent.

That just caught my eye. That's quite a surprising statistic, or it is to me, at any rate. Leaving aside for the moment the finer points of which position he plays, the guy is, essentially, a winger and a goal in - on average - every sixth game, is actually pretty good going for a wide man. If he's done that over the course of his career so far (and I haven't checked the accuracy of the data - wouldn't know where to look, in fact), then given his issues with injury, that's really rather impressive. Doesn't quite fit the narrative about him being a waste of space, does it? (Which some people will find annoyingly inconvenient.)

And on the subject of injury, I can't now remember the details, but when he had his very bad ankle damage and was out for a long period, it was at a time when there was a particularly heavy cloak of silence about players' injury status. However, it did eventually leak out that he had had some fairly heavy-duty surgery, with, I believe, some metal-work having to be done to the joint - pinning, or a plate inserted, I'm not sure exactly what. I also remember hints that it had looked a bit touch-and-go at one stage whether it might turn out to be a potential career-ending situation, which might help to explain why any knock to that area tends to cause anxiety and a lot of caution about how he's treated. It seems to have been largely forgotten that he's had to work his way back from that extremely serious problem, and has had setbacks along the way.

For the record, I'm not a great fan of his, especially, but as ever on OTIB, we do see some disproportionate criticism of individual players. I notice, for example, that some posters have been coming to the defence of Chris Martin, and quite rightly so, following a series of unnecessarily abusive remarks about a very experienced and capable forward who is deservedly well respected in the game. O'Dowda still has a lot to prove, but he's a better player than some people on the forum would have us all believe.

ON reflection, I should probably have posted that on the COD thread, but have no idea how to move it, or whether that's even possible.

Think O’Dowda’s scored fewer than Weimann (and doesn’t have exactly the same record as Weimann).

To some of the Gerard comparisons made, whilst his career record to date doesn’t imply this is likely, wonder if Williams playing slightly further forward could be a decent goal scoring midfielder? Looked dangerous with head and feet yesterday in forward positions.

I'd be surprised if COD has scored much more than 20 goals in his career.

Maybe a copy and paste error from Weimann.
