AFC Bournemouth at home match day thread

Welcome back to match day fellow Reds and to Nige who will be at the helm once again and picking up the reins following his second Covid diagnosis and ahead of the game Steve Lansdown is doing a Q and A. On the pitch Han-Noah Massengo, Nathan Baker, Jay Dasilva and Nahki Wells are all in contention following recent knocks.

So it’s AFC Bournemouth at the Gate today, which promises to be a good game. They are second in the table following WBA’s 1-0 win last night. Given our home form and them being unbeaten this season, having won 7 and drawn 4, it’s obviously going to be City first up on Quest tonight as the form book gets ripped up!

As mentioned, they are undefeated and their last game was the first time they had been behind all year, but two goals in three minutes reversed that as they ran out 2-1 winners over Sheffield United. Unsurprisingly, Scott Parker won the September manager of the month award.

We can expect our highest attendance so far at AG this season. Considering the relatively short trip and their form the Cherries will have a strong following today as their traveling fans look forward to a day trip to Bristol and the opportunity to escape from the seaside. There are two main stories as to why the club are nicknamed the Cherries . Firstly the cherry red striped shirts the side wear and secondly, Dean Court was built next to the Cooper-Dean estate which included many cherry orchards.

The club changed the marvelously impressive name of Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic to AFC Bournemouth for the very foresighted reason that they would be first in any alphabetical list of English clubs, in front of Aldershot, Arsenal and Aston Villa. Many editors and compilers, however, seem to have ignored this!

Of course they have one of our own in Lloyd Kelly who joined them in 2019 for an undisclosed fee, reported as £13 million, after eight years at Bristol City. He turned 23 earlier this month and is standing in as captain this season in place of the absent Steve Cook.

Another City connection saw Brennan Camp, grandson of Gerry Gow, making his Bournemouth debut in round 2 of the Carabao Cup earlier this year.

In recent days midfielder David Brooks has revealed he has been diagnosed with cancer. The 24-year-old said he has Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma but that "the prognosis is a positive one" and he will start treatment next week. I’m sure all City fans join me in wishing him a full and speedy recovery. Cherries supporters are planning a minute's applause today on seven minutes for him as his squad number is seven.

They’ve had a roller-coaster time over recent years. In February 2008 they were forced into administration, suffering a ten-point deduction. In April 2009 they beat Grimsby 2-1 to preserve their status in the Football League. After 125 years, AFC Bournemouth were finally promoted to the Premiership when they won the Championship in 2014/15 they were relegated in the 2019/20 season.

Our head-to-head record is won 38, lost 28 and drawn 23. In the corresponding fixture last season we conceded late in both halves as we were beaten 2-1. Bakinson’s looping header got Nigel Pearson’s home managerial debut off to a great start but a Dan Bentley own goal, after he failed to hold on to a Junior Stanislas effort, saw the Cherries level at half-time. Then Cameron Carter-Vickers got the vital touch following an 88th-minute corner to ensure a Bournemouth win.

Our last win at home against them was in February 2006 when Steve Brooker scored two and Mark McCammon scored the other in a 3-1 win in league 1.

Bournemouth bosses

  • Bournemouth were Harry Redknapp's first club as a manager. He took charge of them for nine years (1983-1992) overseeing 464 games - the most he managed any team.
  • Sean O’Driscoll became their manager at the start of the 2000/01 season.
  • In 2019 Eddie Howe was awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Bournemouth. In August 2020 Howe left the club by mutual consent (he’d had two spells in charge 2009-11 and 2012-20).
  • Former Fulham manager Scott Parker (who celebrated his 41st birthday this week) was appointed manager ahead of this season.

Yep.

If you've a smart phone, go to bcfc.co.uk and pay £2.50 to listen to the game live. Commentary is via Radio Brizz. 

If your car has any kind of infotainment system either Bluetooth the audio or use a mini jack from your phone to the aux in. Failing that, get an anti-slip mat, put phone on top of dashboard, turn volume up and enjoy listening to our win!

The closer your phone to the windscreen, the less chance of buffering. My phone works well enough left on the passenger seat.

As it is an audio feed, your data allowance should be fine as not that much will be eaten.

Sadly working 6 evenings a week has made that tough. Last competitive game I watched on telly was the 3-0 win at Middlesbrough last season iirc.

Definitely heard positive signs reading here and watching highlights etc, so looking forward to seeing it in person today

Team selection might be tricky with all those coming back from injury.  I think our central defence is OK but we are likely to be murdered down the flanks today.  Hope Nige has a solution for that one.

The omens don't look very good considering that we haven't won at home since God knows when and Bournemouth haven't been beaten all season.

Not expecting to get anything out of this one tbh, so just hoping for an exciting game and a good performance.

My one concern is I wish we had Vyner rather than Simpson on the bench. Real lack of cover if a centre-back gets injured.

Expecting a 2-0 win for Bournemouth.

We are what we are and simply don’t have enough to compete.

I shall look forward to us hopefully playing with desire and purpose but ultimately I will be moving on from this quite quickly and not reading too much into it should we lose.

Surprising line up. Any news on why Smith and Pearson aren't there? I'm assuming because they aren't on the bench they have knocks of some kind so it isn't a tactical choice. Hopefully back in time for Tuesday.
 

Yes - midfield potentially creative but missing beef. Can see Lerma on as sub despite his TransAtlantic trip.

 

Great to see Gav back and even better to see Stan on the bench......we might see Parkers system at its best today....a proper no.6 in Killkenny and two attacking no.8's.....looking forward to it.....well the first half anyway..

 

4-4-2? Two forwards starting. BAck four as standard, Christie and Anthony wingers , billing and Kilkenny in the middle. As mentioned midfield a bit lightweight but a nice attacking line up. Not sure how Brizzle play but can't see it being a ' bruiser' type of match
