Popular Post Jerseybean
It’s our Remembrance Match (see page 27 of the programme.) City poppy pins can be ordered from here: https://www.poppyshop.org.uk/products/bristol-city-poppy-football-pin-2021 Today’s opponents, Barnsley, were last seasons surprise team and they made the play-offs, where they were beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Swansea. So far this season they are having a tough time and are currently sitting second from bottom. The proverb ‘All (good) things must come to an end’ dates back to about 1374 (Chaucer). The word 'good' was added much later. 'Everything has an end' and 'Everything comes to an end' are variants of the original proverb. With this in mind I confidently predict that today is when our woeful home record comes to an end and we will get three points at home. Not that I’m clutching at straws but our last home win was on 26 January against Huddersfield Town, who are just 18 miles down the road from Barnsley. Regarding the growing unrest among some fans, which has been raised and debated elsewhere on OTIB, my own genuine hope is very simply that - supporters support - as anything other than our full support merely adds to the challenging, frustrating and disappointing situation. Just for a moment imagine being a Barnsley fan right now - after the highs of last season just a solitary win this. As IMO the MDT isn’t the platform for exploring the rights and wrongs of how our fans behave I won’t go on! Other than to suggest that as fans let’s really, really support our team and staff. Let’s get the Gate rocking today - get behind the lads. We need to be loud. The singing section do a great job. Today let’s get everyone behind the team. COYR. As NP said pre-match, ‘Now is the time to stand up. We need a performance and we need to get a home win and our season going again.’ Barnsley have not won any of their last twelve games and have had six consecutive defeats, their last victory was on 14 August. They faced local rivals Sheffield United last Sunday which they lost 3-2 having been three down. After the game their manager said, ‘I saw from the beginning two teams that were a bit scared – a bit careful – nothing special in the first half, and it’s always the same in games like this; the team that makes the first mistake starts struggling.’ So let’s hope we don’t make mistakes today and that we score first! NP has said ‘Talk is cheap and we just have to get on with it. The players understand the importance of winning against Barnsley. When people miss out there are opportunities somewhere else. There may be some surprises in terms of selection but we’ll have to wait and see. These can be very important moments in time. If you come out the other end of a difficult spell then there are a lot more positives to come out of it.’ In June this year Markus Schopp signed a three-year deal to become the new Tykes boss when Valerien Ismael departed Barnsley to take charge of West Bromwich Albion. Schopp had managed TSV Hartberg since 2018. There are City links, most notably our ex-head coach who joined us from Barnsley in February 2016, LJ was appointed head coach of Barnsley in February 2015. He had a 39.2% win rate at Barnsley and a 38.7% win rate with us. Danny Wilson, who managed us 2000-2004, managed them twice between 1994 -1998 and 2013 - 2015. Another link is Cauley Woodrow who signed a season-long loan with us in August 2017 when he made 15 appearances and netted twice. When we last played them away he equalized with a penalty in the 94th minute (there were 12 added minutes!) Last season they beat us 1-0 at Ashton Gate. Our head-to-head record is won 44, lost 31 and drawn 24. In 1913 they beat us 7-1 in August 1958 we beat them 7-4 (see page 33 of the programme) and in 1961 they beat us 7-3. If you haven’t got a ticket and want one: https://tickets.bristol-sport.co.uk/en-gb/categories/bristolcityfchome Mates rates are available today, with all Season Card holders receiving a unique voucher code. Which allows them to invite two friends/family members for £12.50 per ticket in all home areas of the ground. The club will also be giving out free squad posters in the family area. Barnsley are based in South Yorkshire, and a (usually derogatory) term often used to describe Yorkshiremen by folk from other parts of England is a ‘Tyke’.The term ‘Tyke’ has connotations of a hard-working man (not normally a woman), but the word stems from Old Norse, where it would mean a female dog. Though, in medieval times, it was more commonly used to describe a mischievous boy or urchin. Tyke was rough, unkempt, combative, but also sly, shrewd, and also careful with money (another alleged Yorkshire attribute) – a ‘tight Tyke’. In more recent times it has become reserved exclusively for Yorkshiremen, particularly during the industrial era, when many of Barnsley’s inhabitants would work in the mines and steel mills. * Their home ground since 1888 has been Oakwell * Barnsley won the FA Cup in 1912 and were runners-up in 1910 * In 1997-98 they were in the Premiership, despite some courageous performances, their stay among the elite lasted just the one season * Currently they aren’t allowing supporters into the West Stand because of safety concerns, meaning 1,000 season ticket holders have to find new seats in the East or South stands for future matches. The stand is the only original part of the club’s 130-year-old stadium still standing * During his playing career head coach Schopp made 56 appearances for his native Austria and turned out for New York Red Bulls after spells with Red Bull Salzburg, Sturm Graz, Hamburger SV and Brescia Calcio * They could have Mads Andersen, Romal Palmer and Jordan Williams back in their squad today. So, fellow Reds today it’s the day we will remember them (please give generously to the British Legion poppy appeal) and it’s also the day we get three points at home, along with a pie and a pint or two and the welcome return of that - we won at home feeling. Baba Yaga
Barnsley are on awful form so based on that it really should be a home win. Should have beaten Forest to be fair and if one of those other chances had gone in then it probably would have been. Gallow’s humour out of the way. The big word for today is SUPPORT. We will get nowhere fast if we don’t show the love to the guys on the pitch who represent OUR club. It is a tough time for everyone but the future will be soooo much sweeter when we come out the other side. New coaching set up with a week to work with the players this is the turning point. My old manager at Brislington used to say that you set the tone in the first 5 minutes. Win your first header, your first tackle, get your first pass off, etc, set the energy, let your opponent know you’re up for it.

elhombrecito
Win today and we could be two points off the play-offs *Yes, I'm attempting blind optimism today. Can't do any worse than my usual pessimism!!

They will see this as very winnable and will have a high pressing game right from the kick off, looking for nervousness and mistakes. New coaching set up with a week to work with the players this is the turning point. Get a grip! Midlands Robin
Fun Barnsley fact. Ex City Left Back, Darren Barnard (great player for us), who went on to join Barnsley in the Premier League for £750000 missed several games in the 97-98 season for them because of a leg injury. What caused the injury? He came downstairs one morning and into his kitchen and slipped on a puddle of dogs piss his dog had very kindly left as a surprise on the kitchen floor.

LondonBristolian
With our home form as it is, I’m just relieved we are playing a team with absolutely no track record of last minute goals against us…
