Hi all,

In this week’s “The Knowledge” in the Guardian, someone asks for examples of games with very early goals that finished 1-0.

I am sure in the time  I have been supporting City (31 years) we won a game at AG with a first-minute winner.

Anyone remember the match?

Gary Owers scored in the first minute - City 0 Sunderland 1 - can't remember exact year, might have been 87.

A night game, Owers scored at the open end, sliding in at the far post. Probably the year Sunderland were champions under Denis Smith. We huffed and puffed all night but couldn't find an equaliser.

The rubbish you remember, eh?

Pretty sure Joe Burnell scored with his left foot in 1st or 2nd minute, I want to say against Luton in the Danny Wilson era?

Joe Burnell scoring!? That's a scrap book moment if ever there was one in it's own right

I was still trying to get through the turnstiles when I heard a big roar, assumed we’d gone 1-0 up.

Neville went round the keeper late on, slotted it in….well, almost, as the camber of the pitch made it drift wide.  Joe Jordan up top, was great.  Eric Gates was a nause!

Bradford, but that was away.

I seem to recall there was quite an interesting game against Portsmouth back in 1976, when we scored in the 3rd minute and won 1-0.

And that huge clock to the right of us very slowly reminding how long to go ?

Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 City - September 2007. Live on Sky

City 1-0 Crystal Palace - December 2008. Maynard after 2 mins

We were good under GJ at holding onto 1-0 leads it seems..

Yep - a geezer stood behind me got into The Gate about five minutes after kick off for that game - at the end he said ‘decent point that’ - his face when I told him ... ?

I can remember us losing at AG to Sunderland with a goal in the 3rd minute.

Yep, mentioned that one just above you.

Promotion season under GJ, we were very good (at that level) at seeing out low scoring games & pretty much repeated the trick the following season all the way to the playoff final.

An inspired keeper in Basso & a back four of Orr, Carey, McCombe & McAllister goes a long way to explaining that, 2 full backs who hated getting beat, an aerially dominant CB & Louis, who was pretty good at all aspects of defending..

The best back 4 we've had since we were a top flight side I would say, far from spectacular as players but were good at defending - Especially Carey who was an excellent man marker.

It might just be me, but after the joy of the celebration of early goals have sided down, I often find an early 1-0 lead unsettling. They completely change the complexion of the game before it’s had a chance to settle. Maybe it’s just because I never trust City to hold on. It’s the hope that kills us, and all that.

Under GJ we were very good at defending leads, although towards the end of his tenure I remember we seemed to start conceding late goals.

But maybe the most memorable was 20th April 1976 against Portsmouth. Clive Whitehead on 5 minutes took us into the old 1st Division.

Indeed, although, as I mentioned right at the start of this thread, I thought the goal was in the third minute.

Whatever, it was very early, and I recall the tension rising as the final whistle approached - and then we all invaded the pitch.

I’m sure I recall the following season  Freddie Sears scoring against us in the first half for Palace, but we came back with a very late Maynard winner to win 1-0 ?

I arrived two minutes late for a home game against Blackpool once, we scored in the second half. I was convinced we had won 1-0 and wondered why others were looking disappointed. Blackpool had scored in the first minute!!

God only knows how we held on to win...............................................

'Wouldn't It Be Nice' if we could do that now ? I asked my Lady 'Lynda' (who lives in Sumahama in Holland) about that game but 'She Still Believes In Me' and City to 'Do It Again'

Off to the pub now to meet my 'Friends' as it's my turn to 'Get A Round'

Of course it was 1976! - at the start of this thread I even mentioned City's previous game, in what was then the Second Division, when they beat Portsmouth to earn the right to play at Highbury.

Conveniently forgetting the game after Pompey when Notts County had an easy win at Ashton Gate against a completely inebriated City squad!

Glyn riley scored in the mid 80s, certainly in the first 3 minutes against a future england goalie.

Anyone name him?

Would it have been Dave Beasant? Glyn scored a hatrick in a 4-2 win if I remember correctly.

West Brom away the season we got promoted to the top flight. Gerry Sweeny scored in the first minute or two. We then spent the rest of the game being bombarded by them. What a night. The minutes dragged by.  Near the end of the season, a Very important 1-0 win on our way up.

Some great memories on this thread. I’m wracking my brains regarding the original question.

Not wishing to hijack the thread it put me in mind of nutty celebrations at HOME. The younger ones will remember Christian Roberts a player that never got the credit he deserved.

Of course the end of the Portsmouth game in 76

I also give you Chris Garlands second against Liverpool.

Louis Donowa against the gas

Korey Smith v Man U
