So don’t expect too much in the way of January signings is my take on this.

As expected,no ambition to compete with the top six ,rather stay in the Championship, and just take our money, ie Season tkt , I Remember Steve Lansdowns words when we got promoted  to the Championship,(SC days) I will get this team to the Premier League in 5yrs, YEH RIGHT,

If this is his strategy then he's one of the worst business men in the World. Income from Season Tickets must be about £3.5m, in June he wrote off another £14m debt by converting it to shares.

He's made plenty of mistakes , trusted the wrong people and I will guarantee he is frustrated at not making the next step to the Prem. But to suggest he's happy just to collect season ticket money is a bit odd.

He builds our hopes up, helps the manager to get the  team into the top 4, then suddenly drops away, to mid table, as always, makes you think they don't want promotion,

Do you really think he allowed Johnson to sign about 70 players, and stepped in near the end of each season to stop any success?
His failings were with the managers and staff, what happened on the pitch isn't down to him. He supported just about ever manager, there have been mistakes, maybe didn't support some enough while being too loyal with LJ.
If we got into the Prem, that £100m would make a massive difference. For Lansdown to turn that down through choice, would be madness.

Spread himself too thin...jack of all trades, master of none.

When asked about Bristol City...the reply is ...' well the men's team etc'.

As every year goes by, he comes across as someone who had a great idea and belief, but made massive mistakes along the way.

Had more money than sense...decided he wanted to leave a legacy. Football, men's, womens, Basketball, Rugby, Lando ( although from horse's mouth, no money involved, just promotion for both ) car racing etc. Spread himself too thin...not focused on anything in particular.

Tbh...it all comes across as a rich man's play thing, and is more involved with Botswana and wild animal welfare. No bad thing.

Imo...it's a project that hasn't been fulfilled and leaving would be seen as failure. So it's a no win situation.

Great being successful at other businesses, but surely he must sit down sometimes and contemplate where it's gone wrong. As a successful businessman you would. However...admitting failure, however hard you try, just doesn't come naturally to some people who are exceedingly successful at other ventures. Doing so would be seen as negative against the prospect of further business investments.

Fortunately it sounds promising this window for a change

122% wages to turnover would suggest we have given it a decent go...

I’m sure he realises how bad it has been recently he can’t come out and say that though can he, same as he can’t come out and say we’re going to buy 3 players or spend £3m in January. While he is a very powerful person he doesn’t control everything.

I struggle to understand this reaction. We are bleeding money, SL has to write a huge cheque each year. We have some of our highest paid players not making the squad and you want him to pour more money in?

NP has been given the job to balance the books. We have little chance of offloading our dead wood even for nothing because nobody will match their salary. They will not clear our books for 2 to 3 years.

I am not sure that SL will be so impressed by the signings made under NP to risk another chunk of money.

I think we are faced with a period of, survive in the Championship (I think Reading and Derby will not be the last to get points deductions). Bring on the youngsters wait until the expensive mistakes are gone. By that time you would hope that our post Ashton management team will have put together a recruitment proposition strong enough to tempt SL to open the wallet again.

I think many Championship clubs will be taking the same approach. Unless wages fall to a realistic level and clubs start to live within their means, I think the championship will be the grave yard of many formerly big clubs.

It cannot go on as it is.

Hope your memory of the quote is better than that of the match - it was Bradford City.

He didn't say anything of the sort in this interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyw2b9yTOFE - so hopefully you can remember which outlet it appeared in.

Well, I think we are turning the corner of recovery under Nigel Pearson albeit slower for some on here.

As others have said he feels exactly the same as everyone else as he's a fan also. People who say he doesn't is a little bit disrespectful in my view.

Yep. Imagine what this forum would be like if we ACTUALLY had a bad owner. Like one of the foreign ones who would rock up if SL really decided to sell.

I did quote Blackburn (I think), maybe I'm wrong, but I still say, the premier League is a dream, never going to happen,

Another waste of money to chalk up to the oily one.

At Brentford I read that the headcoach doesn't  have, hasn't had the final say on signings- worked quite well. Unsure how it all broke down here.

I digress, Kent has his attributes but our success had come without more traditional wingers in our golden period that season.

Switching to Kent, more traditional fullbacks etc just ripped that structure right up. (The shape when we had all those injuries and yet looked really good).

Fwiw I think we have made them in 2017/18 given the massive headstart we had on the chasing pack around Christmas time (post Reading at home), the fact that the injury situation was set to improve in the 2nd half of the season, we didn't sell anyone in January and the confidence of the Cup run.

There is also an argument that we could have pushed for say one more CM and one more striker in January 2019 given a) The fact that some momentum was slowly building b) The fact we still had a certain chunk of players who had experienced strong Cup runs (useful for playoffs that) and c) We had useful financial headroom unlike Jan 2018.

Our CM especially was thin- Korey had his injury, Hegeler quit/was released after injuries and his coaching ambitions, Walsh despite attributes wasn't fully trusted and Morrell was promising but not seen as sufficiently ready.

Thw result being that you flog Brownhill and Pack into the ground.

Although we wouldn't particularly be able to splash cash barring a highly unlikely promotion in that time until by my estimates summer 2023 ie 2023/24. Or barring big growth in turnover (genuine not inflated), big player sales or the cost base plunging.

Profit on disposal of Fixed assets no longer counts towards FFP and I expect the EFL would be all over suspiciously soaring RPTs.

Granted spending in terms of owners isn't everything but I expect that some would have the expectation that a new foreign owner comes in and cash splashed. Not if the FFP position is tight. Strategy of course is a key factor too.

Might also ask @frenchred to follow up.

SL sells tomorrow, new owner comes in...foreign.

What would you expect them to do?

What do you think that they could do within the regs.

Cannot stress enough, new owners do not or cannot reset the regs for a club. Although unlimited expenditure on academy eg is permitted, as it is with infrastructure...one other benefit could be if SL hasn't been putting in the full equity amount to fill the gap between upper and lower losses- although I think he has.

The loss and the position stays with the Club- not the Owner. New foreign owner couldn't give us a quick fix unless they gambled in Jan 2022 to spend all of our remaining headroom on strengthening the squad, we surged up, snuck into the PL via the playoffs...other than that...?

That aside there would be no quick fix and such an approach could land us with notable problems if promotion was not achieved this and only this season.

New owners don't mean instant success, I never ever said this, what new owners can do is eradicate the mistakes continually made over lansdowns tenure, they don't need to throw bad money after bad as done during lansdown tenure and they can start by putting football people in the important positions again not done under lansdowns tenure and have a fully functioning, accountable board of directors, again no done during lansdowns tenure.

Not asking for or expecting instant results just signs of a functioning  club showing progress

While there's no quick fix, SL could easily upgrade the academy to Cat 1 status and employ a DOF/Sporting Director to implement a proper scouting network that integrates with all the data the numbercrunching interns process at the training ground. For all the investment in tangible assets, the football infrastructure is lacking.

I have some sympathy with that especially the Category 1 bit. Sporting Directors in this country have a mixed record but yeah don't disagree, especially the Category 1 bit., Although Brentford do rely quite heavily but not exclusively on data- yet I bet some of their successful foreign signings in recent times were not even on our radar. Nothing at all to stop him pumping in loads more into the academy should he so choose and that would benefit us.

Okay that's clearer then. I think SL's tenure has been a mixed bag tbh and giving Pearson time and backing as far as financial figures allow seems the way forward-if he is looking to sell- could be a nice parting gift. Both to keep the ship afloat now and steadily build in the coming years- on the pitch and off it.

Walsh? An obvious link but wonder what he's doing now...

As is this?

It is these things that turn us from perceived well-run club to a well-run club, rather than a large invested club.
