Which Result Was Our Best Ever?

Gotta be Palace for me. Was old enough to enjoy it but young enough not to be entirely cynical how we were going to do in the PO final.

The subsequent games were incredible but the cynicism had set in by then ?

What about Chelsea in the FA Cup 4th round, 1990, 3-1!  Great performance on a mud bath of a pitch when we were 3rd Division!

Best i would say Man United we outplayed a very good team full of internationals.

Enjoy most def Bolton being a young lad i was so excited about a trip to Wembley for the first time and winning as well topped off the best day.

Lots of great memories there but I can't think I've ever enjoyed a City win more than that night at Bradford. It would have been so 'Bristol City' to lose 1-0 and disappoint everyone but to win 6-0 on a glorious evening, for the result never to be in doubt, and for a great side and a great manager to actually win something as a consequence, was wonderful.

Bristol Rovers 1 Bristol City 2 at Ikea with Cooper giving the Few plenty afterwards....................the day our ragbag collection of very young kids and old age pensioners were supposed to go over to Eastville and get their arses kicked from pillar to post.

No other result even comes close for me because that was the day that "we were back".

One-nil down, two-one up, we knocked Rovers out the cup ...

Rotherham in 2007 to finally get us back up to the second tier was a highlight for sure. Not the 'best' match or result ever, but was arguably the start of the club becoming a relatively secure championship club. Great day out too - with the weather and pitch invasion after

Orient at home in the early 70s. Losing 1-3 at half time, ended up winning 5-3.

MK Dons at home in our promotion season 3-2. What a game, took me hours and a couple of pints to calm down

Beating Hereford in the semifinals at home to send us to Wembley in the Layland Daff or whatever it was called.

Beating Rovers in the Johnstone Paint trophy as it was my daughters first game and it got her hooked on City and we have been coming up from Taunton for most home games and a few away ever since. So thank you City for the time we can spend together.

This will obviously depend on age, but I'd say.

Leeds. (1-0 away) They were in amazing form and unbeaten when we played them in the Cup. To win there was massive (and annoying, as I wasn't allowed to go). There was even a cartoon in the National papers showing a TV with the score. The repair man is saying, no mate, it's right, mine says the same.

Portsmouth. (2-1) Got to say this was a huge win, clinching promotion to Div 1.

Coventry. (2-2) Amazing night, 15,000 Reds there to see it.
Bonus: Leeds (1-0). M'boro (0-0). Liverpool (2-1) the 3 games before Cov, that meant a draw would keep us up. Garland scoring all 3 goals.

Chester. (2-1) Clinched Promotion from 4th, and one of my Fav away days along with Cov and others.

The other lot (2-1) 1-0 down etc. Mad , mad day.

Obviously the 2 Manchester games, Liverpool and others , but the stand out for me.

I'll add 3 nearly ones, Spurs, Forest & Man City Semi finals. How I would have loved to have made a "real" final.

Since I have been going to games in the early 80s, the best result for me has to be 3-0 at Wembley. Seeing City win there for the first time was something special.

The ones I enjoyed most - hard to choose between 5-4 at Mansfield, the Donowa game v the fewers, Anfield in 1994, 2-1 v Man Utd and 8-2 v Walsall.

Agree with all those. Portsmouth was 1-0 though. A horrible match in some ways: we scored early on; Portsmouth were already down and not much of a side; we were expected to beat them. But we couldn't find any rhythm to our play and those last few minutes were agony.

I remember leaving the ground and saw a banner - clearly made up in advance of the match - at the back of a Portsmouth supporters' coach: 'You'll come straight back down.' Wrong. There were amazing Coventry and Liverpool and Manchester United matches to come but maybe, just maybe, it might have been better if we had because the years after Div 1 were depressing and set us back a lot.

It's odd, isn't it? The 5-3 win over Orient sticks in my mind as well.

Out of games I enjoyed most (watching since about 05) - United at home, Rovers JPT, Swindon at home promotion season, Middlesbrough FA Cup in 07, Palace playoff semi (although had to watch on TV).

Those are the ones that stick out. More for the overall experience rather than ‘best result’ though.

The Swindon (revenge) night game was pretty special.  That atmosphere and Cott’s reaction……priceless.

Has to be the Leeds Result, they were the best side in the country at the time.

It could be argued that they were the best side in Europe at the time, too.

Surprised there's no mention of beating Arsenal at Highbury on the opening day of the 76-77 season. In the week leading up to it all we had in the national press was how Supermac on his debut would put the country bumpkins on their return to the top flight after 65 years to the sword but City totally outplayed them

Manchester United has to be my pick (not been around too long as this answer may tell you)! Korey Smith's goal is the only City goal I've not celebrated with a yell, because I was genuinely stunned into a silence (with both hands in the air and my jaw on the floor). Into a semi-final of a major tournament, you can't help but start to dream.

Then we drew Man City and I went home to bed.

This for me aswell.. After years and years of playing in the third tier we finally did it. Amazing moment, a squad of really likeable players too which always helps - the season after wasn’t too shabby either!

Born in '94. Having read the forum for years and not having much knowledge of anything before 2001 I will go based on my own time.

Top 5
1. City 2-1 Man Utd 2017
2. City 3-0 Swindon 2015
3. Mansfield 4-5 City 2002
4. City 3-1 Rotherham 2007
5. Cardiff 1-3 City 2001

All for differing reasons. I didn't include the Playoff Semi final wins as we didn't see the job through and that will always remain my main memory.

Yes and lost the final! Don’t bring back the bad memories

Takes nothing away from it. IMO that game must be in the conversation when talking about the Club's 'best ever' result.

I wish I could speak to someone who remembers those early years, and in particular our first spell in the top flight between 1905 - 1911. It was fleeting success (as always with our club) but 1905 - 1911 is our greatest period ever if you measure it by final league positions, cup runs etc.

They had 55% possession that night. We had 11 shots and 6 on target, they had 19 and 5. I think they hit the post first half, at 0:0.

We definitely outscored them, and scored by far the quality goals, but "outplayed" them is a figment of your fertile imagination I would say. But don't let me get in the way of that, I'm sure I won't. You remember it as you please!

Pretty much childhood superheros right there.

They should never have been sold, they should still be playing today ?

Of recent games: the 6-0 away win at Bradford to confirm going up was really enjoyable.

Absolutely dominant showing and after the many times we’d had to scrabble to get over the line in league one promotion races, to so comfortably secure championship football was great.

That's what Jose said! ?

Maybe outplayed was the wrong word but certainly thought we deserved to win.

May not be THE best ever City result but its one of MY best ever City results. Beating the Gas 3-2 at home just a few days before Xmas in 2000, especially after being one down in the first minute.

Just remember freezing my nuts off, singing Walking in a Wilson Wonderland and Beadle scoring. Great result, great night ?

No question, beating champions Liverpool 2-1 in 1977 as we fought to stay up at the end of our first season back in the First Division.

We were still bottom of the league with only 5 games to go, but we only lost once in our last 8 (in the days of 2 points for a win, a draw was more useful), the run went;

Stoke (a) 2-2, QPR (a) 1-0, Leeds (a) 0-2, Man U (h) 1-1, Leeds (h) 1-0, Boro (a) 0-0, Liverpool (h) 2-1 then the 2-2 draw at Coventry.

What a run of results for a team that looked dead & buried, truly magical times.

Spot on - that was a brill result - nearly 39,000 packed into Ashton Gate - Chris Garland notched twice - and Liverpool played a full strength eleven - they also went on to win The European Cup about a week after that game - great memories ...

Which game are you talking about? There’s a few to choose from where Man Utd is concerned - the Mabbutt hatrick at Old Trafford in 1978? Doing the double over Man Utd in the 1974/1975 season?

The recent cup game. I wasn't at the others you mentioned.

For me, without a doubt 1977 last game of the season, Coventry 2-2.

You had to be there, amazing scenes at full time. And both sets of fans ecstatic.

It felt better than getting promotion the previous season.

And the number of us away supporters was unbelievable.

Pulled up bits of turf at Highfield Road after ?

Def Leeds....so much a Goliath game....on headline news on R4 every hour all the way home! But isn't it sad how few truly specials there have been...when you've been supporting 63 years as I have. All games mentioned so memorable.

I take the opposite view. Can’t think of many, if any, teams I’d have preferred to have supported in the entire league.

The highs, and there have been many, can only truly be fully appreciated if you’ve experienced the lows.

Following City over a period slightly less than you started with the third division, then up to the first, down to the fourth in successive seasons, back to the second.Enjoyable cup runs in different competitions including Wembley victories, and pretty intense rivalries with some of the most notorious fan bases in the leagues - Cardiff/Wales, Millwall, Brum - plus an cross-city one thrown in.

OK we’ve been becalmed on several occasions and been really crap with little hope - the last few years have been some of the worst - but generally speaking its been a great ride. I even enjoyed some of the days in fourth, Chester away was amazing, trips to Notts County (I think the fourth, could have been the third) were always great parties, watching Coops turning a failing ship around single-handedly was brilliant.

Witnessing The Gate constantly evolve into one the finest sporting venues has been an added bonus too, as has been the development of the Bristol Sport concept.

Few fans of a local club could have been on a journey like ours.

Just need to top it off for me with a visit to the Premiership, maybe a (proper) Wembley final and the jobs a good’un.

beating Arsenal on the first game of the new season in Division 1

If I had one wish I think I'd travel back in time and go to this game. Others might have been bigger, or more dramatic, but this must have just been so much fun to attend, and is a quite significant result in our history.

Some really good ideas on this thread.

I'm perhaps foolishly hoping that I might one day have a European game to attend...maybe...maybe.
