A player from our Alan Dicks era First Division squad told me that he used to earn £800 a week basic back then. Not a bad crack in 1980: probably equivalent to a company director or an established barrister etc in those days. Now, a top tier player even at a smaller club would be earning more than CEOs of many multinational businesses. Only film stars, successful City traders and gangsters will be earning more.
