Good luck to the lad and all others who have the courage to openly be who they are.
We only get one life.

It is a shame that it is newsworthy, but equally there are probably lots of young people living in the shadows who might be working in an environment where this level of honesty eludes them from being who they are, or living the life they should realistically expect to have because there has been no one before them in such a male dominated setting who during the start of their career has set the trail.

I hope he inspires not just other young people, but others who might now feel a bit more comfortable being who they are.

You are right Major, the ideal situation would be that it wouldn't even be a subject of discussion.

Slightly different situation I know, but I remember reading a story about Jim Abbott a professional Baseball Pitcher who despite only being born with one hand played Major League Baseball. He said that his greatest moment was when he had a letter from a fan telling him how terrible he was, giving example after example, but never once mentioned his disability. :)

I don’t understand!

Stonewall is a charity that has been supporting LBGQT for years, I'm speculating that someone who isn't familiar with the term 'stonewall penalty' will get upset further down the line over the use of the phrase.

Wonder how long it will be until a commentator gets grief for the phrase 'stonewall penalty' if he gets tripped in the area.

I'm sure it will trigger someone.

Well, a footballer coming out as gay seems to have triggered you into a crass response.

what are you on about?

as for the player, fair play to him, I hope he doesn't get the stick that sadly I feel is inevitably coming his way

Why is it crass? Clearly my view was shared in the opening message.

I'm grateful you brought such positive news to our attention but nonsense about people being triggered by the word stonewall  detracts from it. I'm happy to accept that was not your intention though.

About 15 years ago, I was mocked on this very forum for creating a thread saying that I felt uncomfortable with homophobic chants… some of the responses were vile.

Now a player comes out as gay and the response is overwhelmingly supportive.  If this forum is representative of our fanbase, it shows how much more inclusive we are at BCFC these days!

Jake Daniels’ coming out is rather bittersweet. In one sense, it’s a sign of progress that a player is comfortable enough to come out. But it also shows how far we still have to go because in an ideal world, this wouldn’t even be newsworthy.

I remember an away day at Watford when our ‘ lads’ sang ‘ Elton John is a homosexual ‘

I mean I was shocked at the news .

I’ll always remember West Ham Away under McInnes. There were a couple of cast members from the Only way is Essex on the pitch at half time. One of them was pretty effeminate and a large portion of the away crowd starting chanting “does he take it up the ass”.

I’ve been called queer or faggot by fellow City fans on a couple of occasions over the years too.

Bravo to the boy.

Everyone has the absolute human right to be 100% able to be open about who they are. It’s sad that such bravery is still required but hopefully this will lessen as the game has more players representing the LGBTQIA+ communities

Let’s hope he doesn’t score against a team who are losing and going for a equaliser, yes that’s right the old commentator saying “they left the back door open”.let’s get the homosexual jokes out the way

It’s amazing this is even news to be honest. Says a lot about the game we love. It’s an unfortunate fact that you will get meat heads in the crowd making coarse chants.

I do believe it’s a generational thing. I don’t see kids nowadays judging sexuality - certainly not from what I’ve seen as to how kids are educated at school

About time too!

I couldn't give a monkeys about his sexuality, however there will be a certain amount of morons who think its big and brave to sing crass songs about the lad and if that's you, take a look at yourself

Fair play to him especially at such a young age. He may well have been influenced by Nigel Owens and Gareth Thomas both from the very macho sport of rugby and the positive reaction that they got that gave him the confidence to come out.

Rugby crowds are entirely different from football. I doubt your examples have any relevance. Thomas announced he was gay years ago

How far we still have to also in the sense that he’s the first feels able to come out.

You’ve missed the point Tony……………:cool2:

Both Thomas and Owens broke the taboo around homosexuality within mens sport even tho was several years ago.  That took great courage and I’m sure gave Daniels the confidence to come out having seen what positive reaction that both got.

In a way it's comical that it has taken so long for a professional footballer to be honest about this given maybe 2 or 3 per cent of people are gay (IME, not going from any article) so that's a lot of footballers out there keeping it quiet.

Well done to the guy for having the courage to be the first.  IIRC Justin Fashanu came out after his career proper had ended.  Sadly hanged himself a mile or so from where I was living at the time because of accusations from his time coaching in the US.

Round of applause for Jake Daniels for to his own self being true.

Shame there are jokes about this and will be abuse. Just have to hope that the people who make them don’t have family members who are gay.  Can only imagine what it would be like to come out to a family member and be ridiculed for it.  Well done to Jake. Some will say it’s not relevant but listen to opinions from LGBTQ+ people and you will only hear extremely positive reaction to this news

Jake Daniel’s was probably on his potty when Thomas came out.

So what?      :dunno:

Absolutely Daniels would have been very aware of both Thomas and Owens coming out. Whilst it’s not hot public news these days I daresay that in the gay community  it’s considered an amazingly courageous step to take and seen as a positive step towards homosexuality becoming normalised in much the same way that heterosexuality is.

Is there a similar role model in the Bowls Community ?

Yes I know, but since the HIV diagnosis Thomas has become more vocal, to be what you want to be. So I can sort of see what Robbored is blabbing about. (I know I’ve banged my head a few times defending Robbored)

Gareth Thomas is in my opinion a great ambassador towards the gay community and shows that there is no reason to hide who you are.

Jake at 17 and hasn’t rather than come out after a long illustrious career, realising maybe if I came out earlier he’d of been a better player, not get that move because dare I say a manager or club was against it, but right at the start letting the world know, the future is his, this is him, take him as he is, like him then respect and if you don’t, don’t dislike him because of his sexuality.. hopefully has the talent and scores loads, as as I’m sure he will want to be known for most

Encouraging that there’s only been 1 ‘who cares’ type post so far.

I was at St James Park Exeter when Justin Fashanu played for Torquay just after coming out. Not sure I’ve heard worse abuse aimed at an individual. I’m much more optimistic that Jake will get a better reception.

In any other walk of life, this would be a non-story.

But football is still stuck in the 1970s in many ways, so this is a huge development.

I wish him every happiness, and hope if he appears at AG we give him a fabulous reception.

A former friend's child came out, and was disowned.

Note I say "former friend"...?

Similar to what happened with one of my former friends. Cut his daughter out of his life post her sex change.  Absolute See You Next Tuesday.  Astonishing to turn your back on your own offspring. These people need to be disowned.

Incredibly brave lad. We all know what some crowds can be like, Brighton still regularly receive homophobic chanting.

It’s refreshing to see the support he’s receiving and I think it’s obvious that society has moved on dramatically since for example Fashanu came out.

For those saying who cares or why’s this a story - it’s not about declaring his sexuality, it’s about being able to be comfortable with who he is. I’m glad he feels he can do this and hopefully he’ll inspire many other people.

A lad in my team came out a couple of years ago. No one has treated him any different, he’s still the same person. I’m sure most teams up and down the country would react the same these days.

To be fair, no one should care, it shouldn't be a special thing coming out as gay, it should be normal and everyone should be accepting of it,

Sadly that's not the world we live in, but I do have the upmost respect for this young lad, it can't of been easy for him

Wow did anyone just hear Simon Jordan going off on this? Bizarre

undoubtably just trying to be contrary but he went in two footed on fashnus niece who was on the show to celebrate this brave move

jordan was trumpeting “I don’t care if he’s gay, it’s his business why do we need to know?” Which was pretty upsetting to listen to.

perfect world, this isn’t a thing of course but for that knob to fail to understand why this is a brave and important thing to do in the sphere of football is absolutely maddening
