Wednesdays game now being played at Burton Albion

Pitch inspection tomorrow to see if their game v Rotherham on Sunday can go ahead.

Must admit to not following the Commonwealth Games all that closely, but apparently the pitch has been used for the rugby sevens & is said to be in a hell of a mess.

Perhaps worth reflecting that whilst we had The Killers & Elton doing their thing this summer, playing the friendlies at the HPC was a very smart move.

I’m guessing the Gate will be its’ usual immaculate self tomorrow, thanks to our brilliant ground staff.

Seems a bit odd given that Wasps play there and this hasn't been a problem before.

I think we should be awarded a win in the cup game as a consequence.?

Their fans are going mental over Wasps apparently not looking after it properly over the summer.

If the game does go ahead in midweek the pitch will apparently be shocking.

Wasps are utterly skint, but I didn’t realise to the extent that they can’t maintain the stadium

I watched a bit of that.  The pitch looked fine.

Could we use the pl excuse when they lose to a lower league team? We're not used to playing on pitches like that!

Looks a bit shit but you can safely play football on it. Everyone on here who has played 11 a side has played on worse...

I guess there must be a reason there is a pitch inspection?

Bit of a worry for them if this is happening in August when we’ve had absolutely no rain.

We have all played on terrible pitches, but we’re not pros earning our living doing it, are we?

Obviously but nobody was parting with 30 sheets to watch the ball bounce over your foot.

Mrs LR has been in Coventry watching the rugby sevens and it is on for many hours over several days so it`s not as easy as saying `Wasps play there so it should be OK` It`s probably been played on for about thirty hours in the last week or so.

Yep. If it's just Wasps playing one 80 minute game they can probably cope. When it's multiple 20 minute games for 3 straight days then it becomes more of an issue.

Ashton Park was a more than decent pitch. Flat and lots of grass.

Flat? The egg-chasers pitch had a slope running from the bypass side down.

That said, the kid I thought I'd killed didn't roll down it all the time he was unconscious so it wasn't as severe as some.....

@BS4 on Tour...i recall my Sunday debut for your mob away at Pilning. Big cracks in the pitch, ref wanted to call it off, everyone wanted to play. Ref relented with “don’t blame me if anyone goes down a crack and breaks their ankle”.

Which is exactly what our CM did ?

Not according to Mark Robins who's apparently doing his nut. Some form of inspection by a (local?) referee he brought in believed it to be unsafe and Robins us expecting that to be confirmed tomorrow. If so it could put our league Cup fixture at risk.

Thankfully we don't have the same problems with Ashton Gate, although I'm not sure that the HPC pitch is even better.

Might Wednesday’s cup game be in doubt?

I wonder if it might be switched to AG as i can`t imagine either side would want a fixture pile-up this early on - particularly if the hot weather continues and bans/restrictions on watering sports pitches come in (anyone know what impact the Southern Water one will have down there in Hampshire?)

Bit of a nightmare to organise though.

There’s no water restriction on business use, just domestic, so football pitches (& golf courses, for that matter) can continue to be watered.

Talk from their fans that they might withdraw & give us a bye, accepting that there is virtually no time to arrange a switch of venue.

Dog shit for goal posts!

Remember playing at Stanton Drew back in the day and when we drove up they were clearing cows off the pitch.

I can tell you that cows leave a much bigger pile on a pitch than do dogs! :shocking:

Wow, I remember that.

Similar scenario at Temple Cloud as well, if I remember, although it might have been another of those Somerset teams.

Always good matches, and excellent company in their local pubs afterward - although a little bit ‘smelly’ as they had no showers after the game.

If the pitch is rutted and has cracks in it, which I believe it does, then it is not playable, it is dangerous.

Different to a boggy pitch or a pitch with more sand than grass which was the norm back in the day.

If Coventry can’t fulfil the fixture would we get a bye to the next round?

I guess there are a few options. A bye, I think that happened in Covid times when teams couldn't fulfill the fixtures? A rearranged game,at Coventry which looks unlikely as pitches don't grow overnight and fixture congestion. Or perhaps a neutral venue or the game switched to AG, but that would surely be too soon for it to happen on Wednesday.

Think they have 2 realistic options, play it on another ground (they’ve used both Northampton & Birmingham in the past) or give us a bye.

With midweek games next week there is no space to postpone & re-arrange.

Not happy with Wasps are they?

Thing is they’re either ignoring or forgetting why wasps are there in the first place and it’s because of their owners.

Also it appears that the commonwealth games actually have exclusive access until the 14th and they agreed to end it early to accommodate Coventry, now I’m sure Coventry weren’t told a week ago ‘oh btw there’s going to be some rugby but it shouldn’t be a problem’

Could we offer to host but at the training ground and stream it?

No idea.

I’d guess they would prefer to get at least some match day income, even if it was a couple of thousand at St. Andrews.

My guess is it will be reversed to be played at AG, it will be delayed to when R2 is due to be played and whoever wins R2 game will be played the next free midweek as the 3rd round isn't for a while.

Streaming isn’t the issue….the Carabao Cup tv rights are completely different, it won’t be televised wherever, apart from Sky Sports News goals updates and the itv highlights programme.

A bye is a possible outcome based on the league fixture list, as there is no free date between now and the start of round two.  Would seem late in the day to arrange a different venue too. Police usually need several days notice to cover a fixture.

Could be moved to a different venue and be behind closed doors, which would bypass having to get the police involved for crowd control.

Got to say, I feel for Coventry fans, they’ve been really messed around in recent years and despite that have a decent team and manager and then this happens.

It was supposed to be a new pitch but that hasn’t happened, goodness knows how it will survive a wet winter, if it ever rains again, with football and rugby played on it.

It could, but I wonder what our stance would be on this…not forgetting those that have paid for tickets, transport, etc.

It’s a bloody mess.

Hopefully we will get an update asap.

Looking at that I’d say there is very little likelihood of the game taking place on that pitch, no way could it be made safe by Wednesday.

We’re looking at a postponement, or switch of venue to a third party or us.

Yes, much as I feel for their fans I think we’ll take a bye.

A bye would go straight into the top 10 best ever 1st round results ?

"We've been let down, there's no doubt about that, and the pitch has to be in better order - it has to be safe for people to play on and, at this moment, it's not.

I don't see how the pitch can be fixed in time. Looks like it needs completely re-laying. But who would pay for that?

Depends who owns the pitch. Would have assumed the the football club have an agreement to play at the stadium on a fit for purpose pitch.

Imagine the stadium owners want to extract every penny from every blade of grass before spending any money.

I posted the Carabao Cup rules on another thread last night.  FWIW here are the screenshots of the relevant bits, but people can Google it as easily as I did.

I think there is every chance we will get a bye, purely because that there seems little chance of the pitch being remedied, nor sorting out an acceptable alternative.

But we will see.

This shouldn’t be coming to attention as late as it did.  A mess.

Second round week commencing 22 nd August so no chance of a postponement (section 5.3) Neutral venue or bye.

Can see them walking away from the Ricoh yet again. Seems a fairly toxic relationship with wasps

It’s like when Rovers stole the Memorial Ground from Bristol Rugby. The relationship was terrible until SL came to the rescue. Unfortunately, with Coventry, the solution isn’t so obvious. There has been talk of them moving to a new ground but finance is going to be a problem
