Nathan Jones (now been sacked)

Didn’t pull up any trees at Stoke, so quite a gamble in my book.

Some of their more cynical fans are saying it is planning for life if they go down, must admit I’m not sure he’s sophisticated enough to motivate Prem players.

Looks like it is him, so time will tell.

He’s got a good record managing on a budget at Luton  but, apart from his brief unsuccessful sojourn at Stoke, he’s no experience  at a higher level. I’m not saying he can’t do but he might have a problem with some of the players’ egos

Can't imagine Saints fans being happy with this.

Spot on, they are straying back into Nigel Adkins territory with this appointment.  Saints once had the vision to appoint Mauricio Pochettino so the fans are unlikely to be excited by Nathan Jones .

In fairness, Adkins got them two promotions and wasn't doing atrociously for a newly promoted side when Saints sacked him. It's not the worst possible territory for them to stray into.

Not convinced on Jones but we'll see.

Thanks GC. Sophisticated was the word I’ve been looking for.
I was thinking how he’s just not got the personality, charisma, demeanour, etc to be a Premier League boss. Sophisticated is the word I wanted to use to encapsulate that.

He’s basically a ‘council house’ manager.

He looked a very sick man at Stoke

Dunno how he is going to cope in the Prem

A very strange guy

Unless you’re a Luton fan, he’s a very dis-likeable (is that a word?) bloke.  Plays the victim.  That won’t wash in the PL.

Will be interesting to see how he does.

Credit for what he has done at Luton though.

Dislikable.

Definitely suited a ramshackle club like Luton punching above their weight

Couldn't do it with the expectation at Stoke. I'd be horrified if I was a Southampton fan

Disagree on this one, he's always spoken very respectfully about us as a club (not seen anything post-Naismith either) and has done an amazing job bringing Luton up through the leagues. If Pearson were to leave he would be my top choice as a replacement if he doesn't end up at Saints.

In truth, the reality probably lies somewhere inbetween because all people are neither all good or all bad.

The thing that probably surprises me more, is the fact he is prepared to leave them again after having him back.

I know they say there is no such thing a loyalty in football, but blimey.

Very strange to get rid of Hasenhüttl imho. Yes they’ve only treaded water during his tenure - they are in the same position as when he took over 4 years ago, 18th - but what do Southampton fans expect with the squad they have which is young and inexperienced and lacking any goals at all? Jones’ only move has been to Stoke where he couldn’t do anything and he will take them down. Would be livid if I was a Southampton fan but it’s a classic case of be careful what you wish for!

He did well to survive not one but two nine goal defeats mind !

A local reporter on the radio was saying he is bit of a introvert and never connected or was close to his coaching staff

Probably a good thing , as the Club replaced them all end of last season ?

Thats never likely to end well

Bloke previously at Brentford , can’t recall his name , pulling the strings there

I would imagine that Southampton will be offering a contract that will be at least x4 what Luton pay him, maybe more.

Also, they have been given permission to speak to him that does not nessecarily mean he will be offered the job.

Yeah - having your coaching staff sacked and the replacements chosen for you must smart - a lot! They should’ve just let him go then. Rasmus Ankersen is the ex Brentford connection, Director of Football and CEO of Southampton's major shareholder. Definitely pulling the strings!

Nathan is a talented lad.Did well as a number two at Brighton and continued that at Luton.

Stoke were a basket case when he went there and didn’t give him long enough.

I look forward to seeing how he does at Southampton,by the way he won’t have a heart attack on the line a fitter bloke you are unlikely to find.

Does not look a good fit for me, great boss at Luton and I totally respect him as a manager, but he should stay there and finish the job or try to, take them up plus a new ground on the way, appreciate its probably 5k a week or 30k !  get there with Luton and show your worth first like Thomas Frank has done etc...

Interesting read on the Stoke forum. The other side he managed of course.

Some panning him, some wishing him luck and some saying the issue lies with deep rooted issues at their club.

https://oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/thread/306429/mad-nate-favourite-southampton-job

The other interesting snippet is that he WILL remain in situ at Luton for their game on Tuesday. Who is that against?

Why, Stoke away- who sacked him around this time 3 years ago! ?

That could be his final game there, quite interesting don't usually see in these scenarios.

Pretty sure he left them ' in the lurch' last time too.

I put a bit of money on Southampton to go down at 3/1 after they got rid of Hassenhutl and rumours of Jones started to circulate. Nailed on he takes them down, and I would put money on him being at Cardiff before the end of the year.

Easy as an outsider to say but I’m not convinced Jones’s style (gobby Duracell bunny) is the right fit for a number of PL clubs.  Probably best for him he got to the PL through Championship promotion.

It's as @GrahamC and @Harry mentioned earlier in the thread, a lack of sophistication. Your average PL player isn't going to take kindly to that sort of style.

Really surprised that he got the job..........get the feeling that he was picked as a random desperate measure, with very little research.  He is majorly out of his comfort zone, and will be gone by the end of February at the latest............with a big fat payoff? Southampton are  almost certainly doomed.  Which is great, as i got 5/2 on relegation..........though it is very unwise for me to count my chukkies!

Amazed they went for him in the first place. Did well at Luton but just one club, absolutely disaster at Stoke.

considering the size of the club they must have had  any Nev er of high profile candidates interested, this appointment slaked me of accepting relegation and wanting someone with champ experience to bring them back up as soon as possible.

Could he do a job here? What do you think?

Suppose it depends on whether we are willing to change our name to Luton Town, because so far he’s been shit everywhere that’s not named that.

Personally I find listening to his Welsh accent one of the worst things there is, so just like in ‘99 when we endured the intellectual thoughts of Pulis, I’d rather not.

Back in for his Luton players!

As we have previously discussed Luton are incredibly secretive re contracts & when they expire or have been extended but of course he’ll know all the details.

Bree has done well there after a bit of an up & down career prior to them, hard to know whether he’s a Prem player or a great signing if they go down, though.
