France won their first game comfortably and are in exactly the same position as us. I wonder if they’ll put in the same sort of negative, dull, pedestrian performance that we did. I’m guessing they won’t, and neither will Spain tomorrow

I may be wrong, but I don't think Hunter played in the Cup - although he was in the 66 and 70 squads (I've got his medallion in my ESSO '70 tournament book!?Β )

Cooper never scored for England.

Not sure if Jacki D scored for Poland at the finals??

Norman came on as a sub in the fateful defeat to W Germany in 1970 didn't he?

Peter Odemwingie for Nigeria v Bosnia in 2014.

Very good again, but this is a goal scored before he joined us isn't it?Β

So technically not ex-City when the goal was scored.

I tell you what, I do not have the talent to be a TV cameraman following the game at one of these Cup matches, but if I was assigned the "totty camera" role, scanning the crowd for the nice-looking ladies jumping up and down, I could draw on a skillset developed for decades.Β

Β

Good memory (or Wikipedia-ing). I watched most of that year's Cup in a caravan park at Lychett Minster, with my dad wiring up a black & white portable to the car battery.Β

USA are a decent side, just lacking in a finisher. It still doesn’t excuse our terrible performance and neither does the fact that we could relax and not take any risks because a draw would see us qualify. France will also effectively qualify as a draw but they seem to have turned up today.

A memory* of the painful variety. Imagine the stick Sir Alf would have got on social media for the subs he made that day. And he didn't even have Foden in the squad!

*Though I do sometimes post something then wonder if it really happened. Old age never comes alone.?

At this moment with the negative muppet in charge, no. But we have the players to be better than them yes

Sorry, but I think you’re wearing slightly rose tinted glasses. Yes we have some good players but we aren’t on the same level as those teams.

I do agree with those saying that Foden should maybe have come on last night but it’s the typical stick to beat an England manager with. β€œOh if he’d played such and such we’d be watching a completely different game as such and such is the best player ever”

He should have come on instead of Sterling or Saka as he usually plays wide in a front 3.

Alexander-Arnold is the one I felt should have come on as the best passer and crosser in the team. Trippier had a bit of a mare last night

Imagine the stick Sir Alf would have got on social media in '66 when he preferred Geoff Hurst to the fit again Jimmy Greaves !

I was actually confused by his explanation. His argument was that he didn't bring Foden on because he wanted to change the wide players and playing in midfield in this game didn't suit Foden.

So is he saying that Foden is in the squad as a midfielder and not a wide attacker?

He said about Grealish keeping the ball better on one side and Rashford having more pace on the other side. Β  I didn’t agree with him but at least he explained I guess!Β

He brought Rashford on and played him out of position. I'm guessing he didn't bring Foden on because of what he offers without the ball. He should've been braver.

And Roger Hunt.

And playing without wingers.

And drawing the first game 0-0.

And not celebrating England's 4th goal in the final.

And trying to talk posh.?

The question arose in the pub last night as to whether the Gas have ever had a player at the World Cup. I know Junior Agogo was in the Ghana squad during his time there, but I can't recall him at a World Cup.Β

I can`t think of any who went while they were with the tramps. They have had one or two that weren`t their players at the time - the most notable being Alan Ball I suppose.

It's a tricky one with Kane. When we're in the ascendancy he's very good but when we're not he looks pedestrian. If we'd have beaten USA then I would've rested him against Wales but as we have a bottler of a manager who's clutching at straws, he will play him regardless. USA were a good side and played out of their skins. They dictated the tempo. We just needed to click and put away one of those earlier chances and they would've been a lot more open.

We also seemed happy to allow the Americans to have unchallenged possession in their half from goal kicks. The fact they could literally walk it up to the halfway line then launch it to whoever had found some space, caused us all sorts of problems. England were pressed high whenever they were on the ball in our half. We never got a free pass.Β

This ??????

I think France have been far better just wasteful.

They've been eye-catching going forward, but I think Denmark have been nicely organised, have dealt with that exciting french attack relatively well, and have also got in behind the french on a few occasions. It's a good game and Denmark, especially in this second half, are very much playing their part.

Very much so,I’ve just looked on the French OTIB and they are screaming for changesΒ

There have been four truly great footballers in my lifetime. Β Pele, Beckenbauer, Cryuff and Maradona. Β Mbabbe is set to join that list.

He’s 22 and nowhere near his peak yet. So why not compare them then.Β
