World Cup 2022 thread (football only)

Much as i wanted England to press for a goal / winner v USA on Friday night, we are now totally in control of our group and virtually assured of a place in the last 16.

Before Germany got an equaliser, I was already rueing Japan not accepting their 0-0, having 4 points and being in a great position if Spain beat Germany, Germany would be out.  But as it is, their 3 points, meant even a German defeat tonight meant that Costa Rica, Japan and Germany could all end up on 3 points, and then goal difference, etc might come into it.

The German equaliser has thrown that all in doubt.

Yes, if you don't win a game, then always endeavour to make sure that you don't lose it.

Sometimes caution can pay- this group looks quite open btw, I doubt Costa Rica will collapse again like v Spain and should have a bit more joy v Germany than 0 shots..they used to be a relatively positive intent side in the past.

Surely would fancy Spain to avoid defeat to Japan at worst and Germany to best Costa Rica but in this tournament plus the pressure of one off games??

Wheras for us the equation is simple. Beat Wales and the group is won.

Someone I chat football with on WhatsApp tipped this to be a particularly tricky group to call just before the tournament. I had my doubts but looking that way isn't it.

Bit of a random anecdote here.

I’m watching the World Cup from a hotel room in China. I thought there was something weird about the Chinese coverage… something about the camera angle, and the editing, But couldn’t quite put my finger on it… now it’s just clicked…. they are trying to avoid shots of the crowd because they aren’t wearing masks! ??

Whenever there’s a goal scored, the camera view changes to an overhead view of the pitch from far out, as not to capture the hoards of celebrating maskless reprobates. There also seems to be a 30 second delay from the live feed. This country is so wack.

Haha yes. The mass demonstrations here have been fueled by the World Cup, as local people can see that they are the only country in the world still living under brutal Covid restrictions. Another reason why football is the best game in the world!

Anyway, great to see a game with lots of goals in it!

These entertaining 3-3 games are not helping with the decorating I am supposed to be doing.

Cue jokes about better than watching paint dry...

Should have done it last friday evening!

Yep indeed. In other news I have my flu jab booked for during the Eng v Wales game so it is now guaranteed to be a thriller.

Turn up way early and they’ll fit you in. That’s what I did for my covid and flu jab that was booked at 4pm when City played Watford.

The receptionist just said to tell them that I was booked in later that day. No problem at all.

I see Klinsmann is getting torn apart for his comments about Iranian "culture" of gamesmanship. He made very similar points as the post about "latinos" on here - also said they wouldn't have got away with it with a european ref.

In fairness, I assumed he meant footballing culture and not sure it was meant about Iran as a "culture" outside of football - although he's hardly one to speak about sportsmanship, cheating, conning refs.

Not sure you can tarnish all people from one particular country like that though. Not all Germans cheat and dive like Mr Klinsmann did.

Thanks, I might try that. Perhaps England will do that too, turn up.

I thought that was for players we developed but had moved to other clubs. I thought either @Mr Popodopolous or @Davefevs said it was $40000 for our own player?

FIFA's Club Benefits Programme pays a flat US$10,000(ish) per day, per player. That sum is then split pro rata between all clubs the player has been at over the last 2 years.

Come on, how can I get a good paint finish with all these goals going in today? I grew up watching world cup buses being parked, you were lucky to see a goal a game.

I need to water down the paint to stop it drying on the roller whilst seeing the replays.

Is it taking the gloss off your DIY? ?

Reading some stuff, $180k minimum for group stages, $220k for last 16, up to $370k for final.

Yeh, that's the approximate totals per stage per player from FIFA. @Port Said Red I think I previously posted that we'd get roughly an extra US$40,000 per knockout stage that Ghana reach. Roughly speaking it's about US$180,000 for the group stage, US$220,000 for last 16, US$260,000 for QF, US$300,000 for SF, and then US$350-370,000 for Final.

We are also getting about 25% of each of these amounts for each stage that Diedhiou reaches with Senegal.

All might vary slightly depending on the exact day each round is played.

How do we get money for Fam? He was a free agent when he left wasn't he? What about Joe Morrell as well?

It's paid for any time that a player is registered with a club in the 2 years prior to the tournament. Fam left roughly 18 months ago. It's irrelevant how he left.

Morrell left more than 2 years ago so nothing for him.

Wollacott I'm not sure of. He's out in Qatar with Ghana, but I don't think he's an official squad member. So it's unclear whether we get the money for him as well. He left the club in summer 2021, same as Fam.

I think the fact its a winter world cup has really helped the games. Players are at the peak of their fitness rather than being tired after a long season.

Thought England looked knackered the other night!
