Open End Numb Legs
Watched the Germany - Costa Rica game last night, thought the female officials had a good game, well, I didn't notice them which is a good sign. There seems to be those teams that always create trouble for officials with diving and faking injury, the screaming, the rolling around and those that don't. 2015
Have a feeling there might be more upsets in RO16. I can see USA being tough for Netherlands who haven't particularly impressed and in the last Euros they lost to Czech Republic in RO16 when they were the favourites. Japan vs Croatia will be a very evenly matched game and I can see Morocco giving Spain serious issues. Spain's issue is they have one way of playing and cannot adjust as the players suit a fluid passing system, this makes it easier for opponents to counteract the way they play. They should have won their Group.

Open End Numb Legs
So, does VAR assume that all the lines are perfectly straight and uniform? I've see a few wobbly lines in the old days so are they painted by machine with laser guidance or something? If done by hand and the groundsman had sneezed at the wrong moment it could make all the difference. I think I saw a program during Wimbledon one year where they showed them testing the Hawkeye system but that is on a much smaller scale than a football pitch. These are very precise margins looking at the photos from last night.

The loss to Japan was the killer. They scored in every game, are high up in every attacking stat, and a 1-1 with Spain and 4-2 in your final game is a good result. 4 points and positive GD would sometimes be enough to get you through, and indeed has been enough for Spain, and Poland have gone through with 4 points and neutral GD. They've gone out in the group stage, but 50% of teams do that. They're far from the worst team at this tournament. But the expectations on them are very high, so judged against that...they may be the biggest disappointment.

It is why I am a bit of a sceptic when people crow that Germany are terrible etc. Terrible in certain areas perhaps but exactly that is laid our well. They also averaged about 58 pct possession and didn't concede a huge number of shots either albeit not the best...hit woodwork 5 times, statistically quite good, dominant even. Open End Numb Legs
Germany played well at times, a bit unlucky perhaps with how the group played out but thems the breaks. As for England, we beat 2 teams who look poor on those days and drew with a good team. Not saying we are poor too, just we haven't had a big test yet. Optimistic though.

Thought it was worth putting FIFA rankings against each team in each group…and looking at who outperformed / underperformed. Caveat the Fifa World are what they are!!! Group B (England’s group) was both the toughest group in terms of average ranking and the group with the lowest spread (highest minus lowest) of rankings. Group E (Japan, Spain and Germany) was the 2nd toughest and the 2nd lowest spread. Group A (Netherlands) was the easiest group, had the joint 2nd biggest spread, and at this point in time is the only group to go to form, ie group finish matched their rank. The top half of the draw, all the top ranked teams went through as group winners. The bottom half of the draw, both groups concluded have seen the highest ranked teams finish worse off. You could argue Croatia played a blinder finishing second and avoiding either Germany or Spain. 1

Midred
They're mentioning the Suarez handball incident in the last world cup. Yes he got red carded and Ghana awarded penalty which they then missed but isn't there a case for awarding a "penalty goal" without need for a kick? A player other than the goalkeeper has illegally prevented the ball going into the net so to me it would make sense. Having said that the latest offside laws allow whoever is officiating to interprete them to their own whims!
