I've no problem with women doing that job. Women watch and play football, why shouldn't they commentate? Nothing remotely 'politically correct' about not excluding 50% of the population.

For me, I don't think she too dreadful, but it's a question of taste. Lots of folks rated the awful John Motson, with his fake chuckle and irrelevant facts shoehorned awkwardly in. He made me turn the commentary off.

I do agree with those saying Dublin is a useless pundit though.

Completely agree.   There are plenty of blokes who I’d also turn off if I had the choice.   Hopefully it’s not Matterface this evening for example!

Just thinking what a contrast there is between the noise made by the Argentine fans last night and either side today. It sounds more like an uninspiring league one game on a wet day.

For me the Europeans have really let the side down badly in this tournament compared to the Africans, Asians and South Americans. Maybe a sign of the times in terms of passiveness creeping into the game with us being customers not fans.

Such as whoever is on co-comms on 5live and was completely baffled at the notion that someone could calculate how fast Mbappe had ran.

I have the American commentary here and it's full of great 'soccer' stats like "Mbappe showed earlier he is capable of 3.8 40 yard dash"

Chris Sutton.  Think he was being sarcastic!  He loves playing the curmudgeonly old get.   I like him a lot, very knowledgable and happy to have the Michael taken out of him.

See I don't mind him either. I'm not looking for a commentator to tell me all about background and analyse things too much. I can see what's going on. They're just there as background noise and to give you the names of players you are unfamiliar with.  I hate to say it about a fellow Red, but I'm not keen on Pearcey, for example. Calm down, mate. We're English, not Paraguayans.

The understated Guy Mowbray is my favourite of current commentators.

Bring on John Hartson I say

For what it's worth, I think the commentator has been ok. There's one on live who does my head in, but it's not this one.

I agree, Dion Dublin is excellent.

He’s pretty a good pundit for sure.

Guy Mowbray is very good I agree.  I get what you are saying about JP also but I like his style and again he’s so knowledgable.    Matterface couldn’t  even get the German players’ clubs right the other day.  Stuff like that really bugs me.  I know we all make mistakes but surely that’s a basic pre requisite. Champion and McCoist are probably my favourites at the moment.  A superb double act.

He does 606 with Savage doesn't he? I bloody hope he's playing a character. Grumpiest person I ever hear on radio.

Vicki Sparkes, Robyn Cowens, Jonathan Pearce, Sam Matterface all absolutely dreadful. The only good co commentator on BBC and ITV is Ally McCoist, the rest are dreadful. All about quotas though mostly.

I’d never thought of Bristol City fans being considered a disadvantaged minority group. But it makes sense. ??

Lewandoski forces the keeper off his line with the stutter.  Shouldn’t get a second chance.

That's part of the point of that kind of run up though. no different than playing for a foul or penalty. It's using the rules to gain advantage. It's smart because if he scores it's a goal, and if not he gets another chance.

Apparently Southgate is dropping Rashford for Saka.

i heard dropping Foden for Saka (and Walker for Trippier)... it's like trying to pick a Lee Johnson tombola lineup with England, but sort of in a good way!!

I thought they weren’t allowed to break their run.

And then he celebrates….

Really??

Granted he should go to a stronger League but his CL record is also fantastic. Under 25 too, loads of room for growth too. Carried France a bit in 2018 too.

Sarcasm my friend. Something on here said Mbappe was overrated.

Aren't they only banned from feining to shoot and then stopping?

I thought so too.

JETs technique had a similar objective (in my view) which is to force the keeper to show which way he’s going before striking the ball - and if he doesn’t, just keep it low and then the keeper has no time to get down.

But JETs technique didn’t involve breaking his run - or rather his stroll ?

Pretty sure it is only feinting a shot that is not allowed, a stuttered run up is and if your technique is good enough it makes sense to do it. It's a bit like playing for a foul, or time wasting while winning though - pushes the edge of rules and drives me crazy when it's against my team. So I think in terems of rules, the ref gets everything about the penalty correct, from awarding it to having it retaken.

Good job he scored, the retake was on again wasn't it.

I think if players are allowed that, keepers should be allowed to come forward as long as they wait for the kick.

It's all a bit silly.

How about, player goes to his run-up position, keeper on his line…ref blows whistle, player and keeper can start their movement.  Would make it more fun. Maybe?

Sounds good

If that rule had been in place when JET was taking penalties for us then the keeper would have got there first. Easily.

In all honesty (I don't know anyone else who likes this idea ?), but when the MLS started (current version) they did not allow draws and so often had shootouts. Howevere they did these more like ice hokey - keeper on their line, player 35 yards out. The player had to run in and try and score, I like it more because its much more about the skill of the keeper and the player. Where as penalties are much more luck. I also realise i'm pretty much in a minority of one in these thoughts ?

Certainly would make it a bit harder to score.

It does seem unfair that a keeper can't come forward in some respects.

Yep remember those MLS ones in the late 70s.  Always liked that kind of concept, much more skill based.

He's also scored 51 goals for our club over the prior 3.5 seasons. For me that's more important than 6 months at the end of his contract.

Each to their own but he won’t live long in the memory for me. Touch like a breeze block , no football brain whatsoever . Downing tools shows the true character or the man.
