To be fair Saka being dropped in first instance was harsh given his Iran performance. Nobody really played well v USA.     I guess also shows how much strength England have attacking wise

Agreed I think any tow form Foden, Rashford and Saka. All offer a lot, and something slightly different form each other. It's harsh on Rashford, but he'll come on and get a chance.

In all honesty (I don't know anyone else who likes this idea ?), but when the MLS started (current version) they did not allow draws and so often had shootouts. Howevere they did these more like ice hokey - keeper on their line, player 35 yards out. The player had to run in and try and score, I like it more because its much more about the skill of the keeper and the player. Where as penalties are much more luck. I also realise i'm pretty much in a minority of one in these thoughts ?

Penalties are not about luck. Being able to find the corner of the goal isn’t lucky. Loads of skill involved.

How about, player goes to his run-up position, keeper on his line…ref blows whistle, player and keeper can start their movement.  Would make it more fun. Maybe?

... and then there's always the Trumdle solution. (How does he do this?)

there is definitely skill in the kick and handling the pressure, but it's weigh more of a lottery than with the run + for the GK it is mostly luck, trying to look big and guessing right to even have a chance of saving. With the run in it would be more about the players ability and soooo much more about the GK's ability.

Really tough game tonight, they are no mugs, any type of win will do, 4-0 ideally ?. I think an early goal for us will force them out early and could pick them off.

Surely a regulation 2-0?

Old England would really struggle in this game but our fellow big guns have got through so easily

Go for the jugular from the off

It’s the player who played 169 games for the club, 51 goals (only 25 players have ever scored more for the club), who slogged his guts out for us for 3.5 years and often in a pretty thankless role up front, and whose mind (like many players or other employees in a similar, situation) was elsewhere when it became apparent he wasn’t wanted.

I’ll always think of him fondly and hope he does well (not tonight obviously).

I'd say lazy barsteward would more suffice ...

And as for fondness?

Each to their own but he won’t live long in the memory for me. Touch like a breeze block , no football brain whatsoever . Downing tools shows the true character or the man.

He scored 1 goal every 3 games, with a shot to goal conversion rate of 15%, consistently across 3.5 seasons of the Championship. Not many strikers manage a record like that, especially in a team like ours. He's carried that ratio on in Turkey as well, so he's clearly got something about him.

As to the "true character" being revealed. Even if that is true, it doesn't erase that previous 3.5 years of excellent service.

Anyway, to each their own opinion. In mine he's fully deserving of his place on our top scorers board.

Now, were he to score a goal that knocks England out tonight, I may reassess.

He's still a lazy barsteward

As much as I love City , there’s nothing quite to match the tension of a England World Cup knockout game for tension

Probably the PO Final and the odd game in the 76 promotion season

For me its the scarcity that makes it special. It's only every 4 years. Most of us will watch only 15 or 20 world cups in our lifetime. Therefore every knock out game is important, as if we lose them that's one more of those relatively few chances you have to see your team win. There's no club competition like it.

Back to this slow passing around at the back, almost cost a goal.

In danger of following a fall into the USA game

Tbf to Stones , Maguire they aren’t passing forward because players aren’t finding space for the pass , as was case against USA

They either have to be braver and give marked players it on the half turn or , be patient and hope that Senegal drop off their tracking as the minutes tick by

Walker is having a mare. Defensively being beaten and has no ability to make a forward pass. John Stones isn't doing much better.

Only MBappe to face him IF we get through this one.

Get in! Undeserved but sod it.
