ExiledAjax
Argentina has such a tangled history with Britain, a history that extends far beyond Falklands jingoism and the "Hand of God". The silver land is a grand country in which there remain native Welsh speakers and gentlemen's clubs reminiscent of the RAC. Polo, rugby, and yes their footballing tradition stem from our own. A fascinating history from a fine country. England should never get to enter a team in the world cup, but as the closest approximation to a UK team I'd enjoy an England v Argentina final. Interestingly our potential semi-final opponents Portugal are the other participants in the oldest continuous international alliance - Britain (or it's predecessor nations) and Portugal have been formally allied since the mid-1300's. I can't think of a player in the World right now who would have done the assist Messi did for Argentina's first goal tonight, can you? I think the move to PSG to play in a bit of a joke league was a cowardly easy way out for Messi IMO. That’s why i have more admiration for Ronaldo, he still had the fire in his belly to come to England and test himself in the toughest league in the world again. 5

Why would he leave Barcelona for though? He only left because they had to sell him and PSG offered him a contract so he went there, not his fault. I base players on their ability and for me he has shown throughout his career he is the best player certainly in this era. Still a hell of a goal return for Ronaldo, but Messi did the exact same and won his Country a major tournament that season. That said, I don't for a minute think he'd have been anything other than a massive success in the Prem. awbb
From my experience, many South American players quite often play close to the edge (there were a couple of fairly naughty hits on Gakpo and Depay off the ball early, for example) and if the referee loses the respect of the players, as clearly happened last night, the other team, whoever they are, generally will reciprocate, whether that is the right thing to do or not. We see it more from Argentina largely because they regularly reach the later stages of the World Cup, IMHO.

Open End Numb Legs
Only just watched some clips of yesterday's games, Christmas is starting to get in the way... Brazil made a huge error, 1-0 up, 4 mins from a win and they get caught on the break, 4 v 4 in their box to concede. Argentina - what is it with these South American teams? We have seen some fantastic games in this WC, good sportsmanship in defeat, then you see these teams bring the whole thing down. If you can't win with at least a bit of grace then there is no hope. Mr Popodopolous
Just talking about the Croatia v Brazil game again, I think some of the apparent claims of negativity were harsh. Watched some highlights. They were somewhat cautious yes although technically excellent but what frequently happened was that the final ball...was lacking. The final shot...failed to get it away, a Brazil defender made a little block whatever. The shot count was therefore perhaps a little misleadingly low, in the sense that they creativity and positivity was let down by the aforementioned factors. Port Said Red
This is very poor and boring so far. Morocco look totally comfortable, but have no threat in front of goal, Portugal are uninspiring.

After they dumped Spain out I heard someone on the radio/podcasts ask if there was a "whiff of Greece 2004" about Morocco. This is the first time I've watched them this tournament and yes, I think there is.

downendcity
Just now, TomF said: Never a foul. Over reaction. ***** Portugal? Over reaction? Surely not? In the same bracket as Brazil and Argentina on that front.

I have to say, that when there have been games like this, I think my wife has been incredibly patient about me watching them. I have even offered to switch to something else during the worst games, hoping that would earn me brownie points when I need the, but she has been pretty good about the whole tournament. I think it helps that it's the middle of winter and she isn't interested in going out anywhere much.

ExiledAjax
That is weak defending. But a fun bit of midfield play, a speculative cross, and the lad gets up like the springiest of all salmon to nod home. There's a whiff of Greece '04, but Morocco do have more about them going forward. Edited December 10, 2022 by ExiledAjax
cidercity1987
This World Cup is very predictable in that the pundits don't have a clue. Been going well overboard about Portugal, Brazil, Argentina
