World Cup 2022 thread (football only)

Maybe it’ll make me sleep at night but we’ve lost to the team who are gonna go back to back world champions for the first time ever. And we were the better team.

It’s taken 20+ years, but we finally have an England team to believe in and look forward to watching.

Feel sorry for Kane. The best player of this group and an excellent captain. Kane didn't deserve to be the one to make such an error.

I'm not surprised that we lost the game though. We gave it a decent go, but I can't escape the feeling that there's something missing with this England team - a bit of a competitive/aggressive/arrogant edge perhaps.

Kane been studying the Tomlin ‘how to take a penalty’ video.

Gutted for him.

As a squad, I think we had more to give and didn’t realise our full potential. ..that’s my frustration. Henderson was awesome though, hats off to him an absolute masterclass.

Genuinely gutted after that, we were the better team against the world champions and had a referee who had a shocker.

Such a massive missed opportunity but absolutely nothing more the players could have given and nothing against Southgate. Bellingham and Saka were outstanding

Did just say somewhere else how great the young lads are coming through, both in terms of talent and appearing grounded, but maybe lack that bit of steal. Think it will come though - Bellingham is immense.

Belief .....

We just lack the belief , the realisation that we are a very good side

As I said in another post we need Bellingham’s belief and attitude to rub off on a few more

If I’m being picky , we showed them too much respect first half

Could have been sent off, their defender for 2nd penalty.

We had our moments- make it 2-2 and who knows what happens! Was the penalty shout in the 1st half one we should have had too- looked terrible  on the replay yet VAR seemed to decline it.

Disappointing though, I thought pre game that France might shade it but we (missed 1st 15 mins) from what I saw, we really deserved better I thought.

I am less gutted than the Euro final. We played well against what might be the best team in the world, and went out after being the best side for a long period. Extremely disappointed but just the way the cookie crumbled today. Cannot be sad about how we played.

Great performance..........but yet again......we are lacking.  Best chance to get to a World Cup final, since the last time we blew it ?   Harry's;  in good company, I remember Roberto Baggio striking a similar crucial penalty into orbit in a World Cup game.

Don’t forget Diana Ross missing that penalty

The trouble with England is they are the only top nation who lose those types of games. France had 1 clear cut chance and a goal from nothing, we had 2 pens a few good chances and were far the better side imo. It's so frustrating knowing that we didn't get what we deserved but sadly that's not what football is about.

Fact check - wrong. ?

Italy and Brazil have won back to back world cups.

Granted not for a long long time.

France will win this one, and the next one too. Huge strength in depth and phenomenonal young players coming through.

Respect to Kane. Leading from the front. Had that have gone in it is likely that his team mates would have had to have taken penalties.  The burden and loneliness of leadership is often difficult to bear.

You've done us proud lads. Chin up.

I completely agree.....but that was a pheckin awful penalty, that Harry will have nightmares about?

It just shows the huge pressure that top players are under. Delayed kick, weight of a nation on your shoulders. Hell

We just need to grab what Bellingham oozes

He , ( in the nicest way)  doesn’t (over)  respect the opponents ,

He believes he’s ,/ we are as good or better and imposes that in his game

Totally agree I love bellinghams arrogance - no fear

Horseshit.

It was a 51:49 game. Ref was shit and had Kane scored the penalty we would have won.

Foden, Bellingham, Baka, Mount, Rashford, Rice, the future is brighter than it's been in a long time.

Add Alex Scott for the next world cup

I don’t think France will win it. I can even see them losing to Morocco in the semis

England played well, they were IMO the (slightly) better team. The Ref's decisions shipped th game massively.
Them going 1-0 let them sit in.
It should have been a foul , so 0-0
Then Kane's Pen, 1-0, the one not given.
So our equaliser 1-0
Our equaliser makes it 2-1
They make it 2-1 with Geroud
If the game is Reffed properly we win

If they beat us 2 or 3 nil, I'd be gutted, but I'd hold my hands up. Shit Ref's kill the sport.

Yep. Posted this on our WhatsApp group after the game…

Probably the better team for the last hour. Refs name is probably Pierre or something. Ah well City won today that’s more important.

I know it was never going to happen but I would have liked a different penalty taker for the second.

He’d already got one over his team mate Lloris and there was just too much going on in his head for the second, the resulting pen was no surprise

I know what you mean, but if he hit the target at that pace , he scores . I feel for him , the pressure is massive.

No. I think Morocco will be exhausted after the emotion and exertions of the 2 wins and the quality of the French will brush them aside.

I hate the tactics of the North African teams . They play to get a goal on the break then put all 11 behind the ball for the rest of the match. Egypt play the same way - what a waste of the talents of their skilful players.

Good olde FIFA......their choices of referees reflect just how poor they are at running the World's favorite game?

For a group of referees all following the same guidance and rules it spoke volumes about the kinds of matches they referee at home.

It was huge pressure, maybe more because it was a team mate and he’d outwitted him once, Lloris keen to get even.

I do feel for him though and certainly hold no grudge

All down to FIFA.

They hate us because we invented the beautiful game. England despite plenty of magnificent stadiums haven’t been awarded a WC since 1966………….:cool2:

The referees England have been allocated have been diabolical culminating in the Latino oaf we had tonight. It’s all part of wider plan to stop England winning the WC again.

We won’t win it once more until it’s held once again in the UK.
