Lanterne Rouge
The great man has been in hospital for a few days and it has just been announced that he has been moved to end-of-life palliative care as his bowel cancer has spread and is no longer responding to treatment. Robbored
Pele is receiving palliative care according to the BBC. He was the best player in the world for all of his career and arguably the GOAT, only the cheating shit Maradonna and Messi have come close to that claim. As a schoolboy in the late 60s I remember Pele in the 1970 WC actually shooting from just inside own half but the ball went wide. He’d seen the keeper off his line………………things like that never ever happened back then. He’ll be a sad loss to football
RoystonFoote'snephew
Incredibly sad news. For many, especially those of a certain generation, he was and will remain the greatest player ever to have played the game. His star has always been in the acendency not just for his footballing talent but also for his modesty and especially his sportsmanship. Like a number of his generation such as Beckenbauer, Eusebio and our own Bobby Charlton a great ambassador for the sport we all Iove. Ska Junkie
The best ever? I think so. I can just about remember him when he went to the MLS towards the end of his career and he was still incredible. I would suggest Brazilian football wouldn't be anywhere near where it is without Pele. After bursting onto the scene in the 58 WC and starring again in 62, opponents learnt Stop Pele, you stop Brazil. By 1970 however, others had come through the ranks to give him support. It was reported the other day that Pele has been seen entering a hospital, but he told reporters "This is just my monthly check up". If it's terminal, he is still trying not to disappoint fans. Second one: I was about to post something very similar a couple of days ago but then I googled it - and actually that Portugal v Brazil game in 1966 is still noted as being both ‘controversial’ and as one where Pele was given ‘special attention’ and left the game injured. So to some extent both are true (not the N Korea bit though!). And on your third paragraph, yes, it does seem a bit premature…. I’m a believer that people at that stage of life can decide to a point how long they want to keep going and when to give in to it - and I’d imagine Pele would want to see Brazil lift the World Cup. So it’s perhaps premature to be talking in the past tense. On the other hand, I’m sure I heard Klinsmann on TV the other night when it was announced make some comment along the lines of wishing Pele well and that he’d recover soon - which somehow seemed equally inappropriate.

I would be delighted if he pulls through and once again amazes the world.
