Kid in the Riot
Some highlights of his greatest ever performance here. This was the equivalent of the Champions League at the time, as South American clubs were on more of a par with their European counterparts. One of the all-time greats who will be sadly missed. Robbored
Brilliant player, the GoaT in the eyes of many and I’m one of them He was ahead oh his time and if he were around today he’d be almost priceless. His performances in the 1970 WC were jaw dropping and as teenager I’d never seen anyone as awesome as he was. He laid on the fourth Brazilian goal for Carlos Alberto after wonderful team move - voted the best WC goal ever. It was his header that Banks saved, voted the best WC save ever. Silvio Dante
I’m too young to have seen Pele play, so can’t comment on whether he was or where he stands in the greatest debate. However, this was my first memory of him growing up. Allegedy first take. While filming, Sylvester Stallone, not believing football was difficult, bet Pele he couldn’t score in six penalties. Pele scored all six. Stallone got a finger to one which was dislocated in the process.

Port Said Red
Played pretty much all his career in Brazil for Santos, apart from the payday years with New York Cosmos. Most of us only saw him at World Cups which added to the mythology as this Godlike genius would appear in our lives once every 4 years. Unlike Maradona, or Messi, he was a superstar in a team of superstars and still looked head and shoulders above them all. Someone posted this link a few weeks ago, but now it seems even more relevant. If you are not old enough to have seen him, take a look at why he was the greatest for my generation.

Bedred31
Met him in a Berlin hotel restaurant during the 2006 World Cup. Full of red wine, I interrupted his meal to ask for a photo. He smiled and insisted we walk to the other side of the room where “the light was better”. That sort of nonsense must have bugged him hundreds of times a day. He really did seem to be a genuinely nice bloke with the patience of a saint. Great man. 3

RoystonFoote'snephew
Incredibly sad news that the GOAT has died. Not just a phenomenal footballer but a great man who was a credit to the sport, his nation and indeed life itself. Heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family and friends. I expect there may be a day of mourning in Brazil and maybe a national holiday such was the esteem for the man.

Offside
One of the iconic names in football. He was before my time, but I love the effortless simplicity of that goal from the 1970 World Cup when he passes into what looks like nowhere until Alberto suddenly appears and strikes home. RIP Pele. Erithacus
It's a phrase that isn't used much these days, but was often used after a controversial moment in a commentary. Typically 'It's within the laws but not in the spirit of the game'. When I saw Pele in action he was the very epitome of the spirit, with so much talent but class and humility that we struggle to find now. He would conjour up some piece of magic that no-one had ever dared to dream of. But perhaps the enduring image of him was his smile: a smile that was genuine, expressive of the untainted and unalloyed pure joy that the game can engender. The sort that a child will experience before growing up. Love has no better advocate. He coined the term 'Beautiful Game'. He was the one who made it so. It was an inevitible moment, one we will all have to bow to but tonight is a night when the world has lost more than one soul, one player, one individual. Pele will never be replaced or forgotten. TV Tom
Not quite sure how people can say he’s the best ever as most have never ever seen him play even on the telly, I”m into my 7th decade and can only just remember seeing him in that fantastic Brazil team in the ‘70 World Cup, personally I’d be surprised if the world has ever seen a better player than Messi, my dad always thought more of Puskas than Pele, all about opinions I suppose
