Not swearing in general but certainty persistent swearing. Almost 1/3 of our season ticket holders are under 16.

There is swearing and then, again, there is swearing. I sit in the Dolman with a wide age range of people around me - children to OAPs. There is the occasional F word shouted out, usually at referees, but nobody complains as it’s occasional. The problems start when it’s continual. Some people, in normal like, are unable to say more than two sentences without swearing and at football it just gets worse. There used to be a chap who sat close to me who was friendly but he just couldn't speak without saying F’ing this or F’ing that non stop. It was very tiring but luckily he’s gone.

I think the problem is that people who swear constantly in day-to-day life don’t realise that not everyone does the same. They go to football, swear not stop at the top of their voice and then get stroppy when people with children complain. They are happy to swear in front of their own children so assume it’s ok to do the same with other children.

I have a very very good mate that would give his last dollar to someone to help them, he goes out of his way to help people, sometimes to his detriment but his language is atrocious, it's not aimed at individuals but just in general chat. He just can't help himself, we all tell him to cool it but it hasn't improved at all & I don't think it ever will.

There is however imo a huge difference between being verbaly obnoxious towards some-one & some-one like my mate, though both can be offensive.

So which is it? Is he on here or not? If not then how does he know some people talk bollocks on here? Or does he use you as a yardstick.....?

Very little adds up really... You try to defend it by referring to kids in the singing section, (before subsequently saying you don't sit there), but state that he was arrested for swearing outside the stadium in front of kids. So basically you have no idea whether the majority of kids who go to games swear.

I guess he's right about one thing.... Some people really do talk bollocks on here!

Most people swear, but when kids or women (..) are present they’ll rein it in a bit.

The problem is when people behave as in the above comment - to make a point or show their annoyed at a decision etc and it becomes the norm in their everyday life, and for their household (i.e. their kids) - how can that next generation make their anger shown without doing something even more anti-social, as the swearing they’ve done all their lives is now just ‘normal’ for them?

Thats why society has unwritten boundaries which most people have the moral compass to abide by without being asked to.

I've had to make numerous complaints to the club this season due to bad language. These people bring children along with them and in normal conversations with their children will use swear words. It's probably a reflection upon how they themselves were raised.

No one minds the odd swear word. I'm more than guilty of that. However every single game this season my child has had to listen to the same people talking for 90 mins with every other word being the f word or the c word. Even as an adult I don't want to be listening to that for 90 mins.

It's just the total lack of respect shown by other parents that I find disgraceful. I even got told by those round me that if I don't like it to go and sit in the family section.

The ground rules that we all agree to are pretty straight forward to understand.

As Al and his son have figured out, it can also be an illegal offence to swear in front of children.

When I voiced my displeasure to those near me about their language in front of my child I was told to go and sit in the family section by them. They have then spent the whole season purposely swearing in an attempt to antagonise me.

Finally one of them has been banned by the club but it took a very long time for the club to take action. My son didn't want to come to games at one point. If it wasn't for my persistence then City would have lost him as a fan.

I should have said I wasn’t specifically commenting on that situation, it was more of a general point about swearing inside the ground .

True we never see examples of police using their power excessively especially at football.

I guess the only people that really know in this situation will be the people there. I'm sure there is more to the story than second hand information from Dad.

Isnt this all just a load of old bollox?! Who cares! Far too many snowflakes in this world now i’m afraid.
Unfortunately ( for most imo ), swearing is part of general vocabulary nowadays.
Yes it should be reigned in and certainly around kids, but are we really that bothered? I know i’m not!

On the subject of swearing, had a right moron sat behind me on Saturday - I sit in the children’s section and luckily my 6 year old didn’t fancy it this week. This guy spent the whole match swearing at the top of his voice and then complaining that he was getting looks - guy obviously had no awareness of who he was surrounded by. I was expecting a drunken teen but when I looked around he must of been in his 60’s

Well.

The report refers to Patrick Elkins.

A quick Twitter search for Alan Elkins (assuming Al is short for Alan) finds a Bristol City fan with that name.

A guy who sits behind me can get really excitable and swear constantly throughout a game, he told a woman in front of me to wind her neck in and go and sit in the children’s section, when she asked him to stop. Many in our section have told him to calm down, he’s even had a go at me on occasion. He’s a nice bloke but sometimes goes on too much, it’s not even always foul language.

What was the actual reason for his arrest? Swearing in front of children or being abusive to Man City fans, threatening police officers and trying to headbutt them?

Interesting that although you claim that Bristol Live have overreacted, your son still pleaded guilty to a public order offence and common assault against an emergency worker.

ℹ️ STATEMENT - FOOTBALL BANNING ORDER

TUESDAY, APRIL 4TH 2023

A man has been banned from attending football matches for three years after magistrates were told he tried to headbutt a Police Officer following Bristol City's Emirates FA Cup tie against Manchester City.

Patrick Elkins, of Silverhill Road in Henbury, appeared in court in Bristol on Thursday, March 30th and pleaded guilty to a public order offence of threatening or abusive behaviour and one count of common assaulting against an emergency worker.

The 33-year-old was abusive towards Manchester City fans after Bristol City's Emirates FA Cup defeat to the Premier League side on Tuesday, February 28th outside Ashton Gate.

Elkins, when approached by officers, then made threats towards them before attempting to headbutt a Police Officer.

He received a three-year banning order for his offences, which prevents him from attending any match in the UK for the duration of the order or going to certain areas near football stadiums on match days.

Elkins was ordered to carry out 200 hours' unpaid work and must also pay £200 compensation, £114 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

Dedicated football officer PC Thomas Williams said: "We welcome the court's decision to issue a football banning order following this incident. We are committed to working with all our football clubs and sports teams to ensure supporters can enjoy games without fearing for their safety.

"It is important to recognise however this FA Cup tie was played out in front of a full house with more than 25,000 fans in attendance. The irresponsible actions of one man should not overshadow the good behaviour of the overwhelming majority of supporters who contributed to a terrific atmosphere both inside and outside the ground.”

Bristol City Football Club condemns violence in any form as we strive to make matchdays a safe and enjoyable experience for all at Ashton Gate.

The Club have fully supported Avon & Somerset Police throughout the process and their decision to issue a football banning order.

I’m not a Lawyer but as far as I know  swearing or using threatening language in public is a Public Order Offence. I would’ve thought he’d have been warned about his conduct before actually being nicked though.
Im intrigued to know if there’s more to it ie Copper told him to zip it, he told Copper to “go **** himself!”… that sort of thing?

And then tried to headbutt the copper.

We can all let loose with a swear word as a way of letting off steam. Many children know and use it so nowadays it's not as serious as in my childhood. But the continual use every other word is repulsive and should be reported.

Getting back on track, how is the story on Bristol Live wrong then @Red-Al?

I get that he's your son, and the natural thing to do is to defend him, but when the police and the courts say he's done wrong, I think he's probably done wrong.

Everyone can have a bit of a rant/swear, but it's not like it's a one off is it?

Can't remember who it was against, but years ago I remember a rather well-to-do middle aged lady sat near us abusing the referee by declaring that "you're not your father's son"

Ok let's get our facts right here, he pleaded not  guilty to assault on a police officer which was proved with video cam, did not headbutt her,  pleaded not guilty for being drunk and disorderly, passed a breath test, went to court but his solicitor who he only met 1hr before the court case, advised him to plead guilty on all offences , otherwise it would go to crown court,he's appealing the charges, that's what I mean that the BL went overboard with the charges on consent of the police, so all you lot should be standing up for him instead of slagging him off, that's the true story, but BL only published the story given to them by the police,

Just a few things…

- Bristol Live (and the club) published the story as it stands. He’s been convicted. That’s not police spin.

- He pleaded not guilty but there was bodycam footage. That suggests there’s the awkward thing of “evidence”

- Why would he plead guilty so it didn’t go to crown court (and therefore not extend the case) and then appeal and extend the case

- Lastly, as he’s been proven on camera to have attempted to headbutt a woman, why the hell do you think “us lot” should stick up for him?

Forgive me for intruding, but there is one thing I don’t really understand.

You state that your son is appealing (and I’m sure he is to you - parents often have unconditional love for their children), but the ‘official’ reports indicate that he pleaded guilty!

What exactly is he appealing against, and on what grounds?
