Blackpool at home match thread

Just for once, especially when teams sit back with two narrow banks of four defending the width of their box, it’d be nice to see someone shoot from outside the box.

Fair play to Blackpool, they have defended very well in that first half.

A repeat of the first half v Huddersfield really. By most metrics by far the better team, but just not clicking in the box. This lot kept a clean sheet v Burnley last time out so no mugs at the back, but telling that the single best chance was theirs. Not too critical given the points on the board already and the forced changes, just bloody frustrating.

Hopefully it comes.

When a side is packing out their defence you don’t try to tippy tappy it probing for gaps you get round the back.

Too much possession and probing and not enough conviction.

Got to get quicker with the build up play.

Stretch them, use the wide men and get the defenders facing the wrong way.

Frustrating watch so far.

I think we’ve played really well again. If we keep at it the goals will come - and I hope the players believe in that more than a few hysterical boys and girls on here.

Agreed. We’re clearly the better side so far, and they’ve defended their box pretty well. Plenty of room for improvement, though.

To be fair I think we've tried a couple. Sakes smashed one over the bar.

The other issue we have is none of our players are very good at long shooting. Mehmeti is the only one I'd like to see try.

Doing well. I’m sure some doom groomers will say different as it’s 0-0 but there you go

Clearly shows the balance of the game, and also the issues with xG. No way was their chance a 1 in 25 one.

The prospect of a dour game awaits I fear, between two teams who aren’t scoring. For me the first goal (if indeed there is one) will be key. If we get it we could end up with two or three, if they get it then they will park the bus.

Some parallels with Huddersfield perhaps in that if one of our first half chances had been taken it would have significantly changed the game with them having to look to equalize.

So, completely hedging my bets, it’s likely to end 0-0, or perhaps 1-0 to them, or if we score first us winning 2-0 or even 3-0 ?

Given the first half and us not getting an early goal I’m revising this - it will finish 0-0 or 1-0 to us or them ?

I thought Blackpool missed a sitter? 0.04 of a sitter must have been a shot from the half way line

I'm guessing it's because there was a goalie and defender blocking the path to goal but in reality it was an easy chance to just round the keeper or slot it into the corner early.

Bristol City saying 4 shots on target not 1 that Sky say. I agree with City. A blocked shot can still be on target

I mean fair to say 4 on target with blocks but if it's blocked it's not even forcing a save and still isn't great.

xG in theory is a good idea. In execution it is very flawed.  I believe a goalmouth scramble resulting in 3 shots you will get xG each shot which doesn’t make sense as it’s all from the same chance created

Would be nice to see someone actually have a shot from outside the box!.

It would also be nice to have a wide player who could consistently put in a high cross to a tall central forward. (We haven’t got either). Most of the low crosses are easily cut out by defenders. City are very predictable

Mehmeti does need to get his head up though, had Weiman as a clear option at one point but ploughed on regardless. All about decisions, we are just not making the right ones at crucial times. Yet.

We are so missing the dynamism of Pring on the overlap, JD is neat & tidy but not brave.

Mehmeti guilty (as in previous games) of not knowing when to release it, hopefully that will come.

Sykes frustrating me today, why does he need to take 2 or 3 touches before delivering the ball, just gives Blackpool defenders time to get set.

Sky showed an interesting stat. I think it was that we've had 17 games where we've had over 50% possession and only won 1 but we've won 10 where we've had less than 50% possession.

Our lack of creativity and quality chance creation is really showing.

Wells hasn't played badly with his build up play bit really doesn't look like scoring any time soon. I wonder if we should stick Cornick in so we have a head to aim for with crosses. That way our crossing won't be so predictable, and we can mix it up.

Yeah I disagree we’ve had one shot on target.  A blocked shot can still be on target

Blackpool deserve credit for that

Think this might be nearer the true reason from the BBC match thread

Bristol City 0-0 Blackpool

Chris Honor

Former Bristol City defender, BBC Radio Bristol

Apart from that cross earlier, I don't remember Chris Maxwell having to do much.

Bristol City, some of their best players haven't had that killer instinct in front of goal.

45+1 mins

Post update

Bristol City 0-0 Blackpool

Bristol City are creating the chances and having all the touches in the Blackpool box, something is just not clicking for them up front at the moment.

Yes, we are a very effective counter attacking team. One would assume the signing of Mehmeti, who is a different type of player to Semenyo, was to address that and allow us to create more in possession.

We are so ineffective from set pieces, especially now without Atkinson

I'd be interested to see our stats with him, I honestly don't think we score much from any set pieces, well, other than our two penalties.
