frenchred
Went to BAWA last night for "An Evening with Gazza". Thought it was really sad to see first hand what he has become. Obviously well documented his problems and demons but to see him like he was last night was really eye opening and sad So obvious, so many still making money out of him and pimping him around the country He looked and sounded to me as a man who desperately needs professional help Sort of wished after that I hadn't gone at all

Eddie Hitler
When the whole world sees you in a certain way then that is how you are going to naturally present yourself. Gazza is forever trapped within a particular persona with no way out. That he now lives in Bournemouth, exercises and fishes is not what the audience want to hear. They want the happy go lucky football genius and alcohol fuelled japester, so that's what he gives them and that's what seeps into his soul. I'm not being sanctimonious here, if Gazza was doing his show near me I'd go along and laugh at all the anecdotes. But feel a bit guilty afterwards. Al Stewart on an early version of "The Year of the Cat": Where did the inspiration for Year Of The Cat come from? “It started out as a song inspired by seeing Tony Hancock performing in Bournemouth during 1966. I was struck about how depressed he was at the time – this was just before he committed suicide – and the way he told the audience that he wanted to die. Everyone thought it was part of his act and was laughing at him. No-one understood he was serious. I called the song Foot Of The Stage, but my label felt it was too bleak, so refused to release it. https://www.loudersound.com/features/top-of-the-progs-al-stewart-year-of-the-cat 3 1

He also attends the gigs with someone that asks the same questions so everything is pretty much scripted as he knows the questions already, same scenario also for Frank Bruno. I think the poster has already said he wishes he hadn’t gone which is why it is sad. You are right though, it’s a source of income for Gazza but very sad how it’s all turned out. spudski
Regardless of what he's done in the past, people still want to hear him. The same can be said of many people in the public eye. Many famous people have brought joy to us...but have acted poorly in other parts of their lives. Many suffer demons. Many have hangers on, making money from their fame. Madonna right now springs to mind. The worst I've seen in recent months is Chris Eubank. Obviously has trauma and problems, especially losing his son. Any agent pushing this needs sacking.

Nothing is as black and white as that. You cannot expect normal people to deal with the pressures such success brings. I thought it was documented he had mild Tourette’s syndrome which made react under pressure by doing something taboo. Biscuits Biscuits etc. You could tell when he went to Lazio it was over and he was in trouble.

Southend Blue
Used to have panini sticker albums at school when Gascoigne was with Newcastle. A great player no doubt or maybe could have been, but isn't that the case with so many other names you could reel off. I think being left out of the France 1998 squad by Hoddle was the real killer. The real beginning of the end. Trashed a hotel room like Begbie in Trainspotting when Paul received the news, it still reverberates to some extent even today. Italia 90 will be his signature recognition . Those of a certain age can only recall the true exploits of Gascoigne during that summer. Would have lit up Sweden two years later if not for injury but even that was really self-inflicted. Maybe it's a bit too late in the day to say it, but even so, I wish him well.

Red-Robbo
I suspect we've all had mates like an (unfamous) Gazza. Biggest laugh on a night out. Loves to entertain others. The life & soul of a party. But behind all the laughs they have something missing from their lives, something from the past has made them a permanent class clown. I had a friend like that. Probably drank nearly as much as Gazza. I could tell you a thousand stories about this guy. Drowned when pissed up in Spain in 2007. 1

My mate who was a huge drinker was told he had 6 months left to live if he continued to drink as he was, to my astonishment he stopped drinking & underwent a liver transplant. That was 5 years ago & he now won't even try a zero alcohol beer in case he gets the flavour again plus he says he owes it the family of the person who donated the liver. The fact he had the willpower to stop & organ donations is what saved him. I'm proud to call him a mate & so glad he's around as an example to others. Marina's Rolls Royce
I used to go to the BAWA lunches in the 1980's at the hotel in Broadmead ( the Mariott?) - there was one with Dennis Law and George Best. Dennis was very funny and had great stories but George didnt say anything because he was obviously quite ill through his alcoholism. It was a bit weird as on the one hand, there was a living legend a few metres away but a shadow of the person he was. I met him briefly at the end and got him to sign a b&w photo of him from the late 60's. I think the Gazza story is even sadder. I've still got the signed photo along with a signed one of Sir Stanley Mathews- two remarkable talents with two very contrasting fortunes.
YorkshireSection
I went to the opening night of this a while back as my mate is Vinny Jones cousin. Both men are still very engaging on a 121 basis, Vinny obviously being more of a mate now you forget what a huge Hollywood star he is, the guy is a gent and a great laugh, Gazza has his good and bad days with his demons. I thought the show was hilarious, if not a bit disjointed at times, although that could be down to be seated with a certain Mr Bellew, another nice guy.
