Genuinely thought when Coppell arrived followed by David James that we were geared up for a serious promotion push and we only had to turn up to beat Millwall on the opening day.

I was convinced Man City would beat us 6 or 7 nil all 3 times we’ve played them in recent years.

Aside from that many already mentioned but the two that really stand out for me are the Stewart and Bridges combo that never took off as expected and I NEVER thought the slags would get relegated to Non League going into that last day. I didn’t even glance at the scores until 16:45 walking back to my car at Morrisons and even then it was just an afterthought to look at L2 after seeing we were drawing with Crawley ?

I can't believe you're the only person who mentioned David James, especially with fanfare and VERY long OTIB thread at the time. I too thought Coppell and James was about to take us somewhere.

Mmmm. I’d say lesson not learned considering your posts regarding Harry Cornick.

You must've not read the bit I put into every post about him that said "it's far too early to write him off" I guess... ?

I really thought Simon Clist would go on to play at Championship level, or top end of League One. (Division 1 and 2 as it was then.)

I also thought Ryan Harley would play at a higher level than he did, but he had a decent career on the whole. Just seen he's Assistant Manager at Notts County.

I really thought Trundle would kick on with us. He was class at times though. Just not enough pace for this level.

Outside of City:

Thought Shevchenko would transition to Chelsea. They killed a few strikers during that period.

I thought Rovers would eventually catch us up, get a new stadium, and have attendances over 10k regularly. Not sure what I was thinking.

Loads of players hyped up by me because of FM and watching South American football on C4 in the early hours when I was kid. D'allesandro, Freddy Gurin and Diego particularly spring to mind.

Adam El Abd was one I thought could be what we needed, turns out he was not hard and a leader but a complete liability. I remember in the early part of Cotts' reign thinking if this is the type of player he's signing we are properly screwed.

Turns out Cotterill and Burt were the last recruitment team to have even a semblance of a clue what a good player was.

There are some names that should never be recalled.

I thought Gordon Owen was going to score that penalty at Wembley.

I was underwhelmed by the appointment of Cotts - I believed at the time his teams played a dour brand of football, without really having anything to base this on. That title winning tea m he built was a joy to watch.

More recently, when England were 1-0 up against Italy in the Euros final I thought we were going to win.

When I was about 3 or 4 I was watching a game on TV with Dad and the commentator announced a free kick.

Me- "What's that"  - Dad "It means no one can move until the ball is kicked" - Me "why" Dad "a player was offside".

I hadn't heard that expression before so in my childish innocence assumed a player had turned traitor and passed the ball to an opponent.  To make amends, his team were then awarded a free kick.

Hmm; fast forward six decades; if City were awarded a free kick every time one our players passed to an oppo, we'd be far more of an attacking threat.

I'm a pessimistic type but I really thought we would beat Hull in the play off final also when we beat Man U in the league Cup I remember saying  to the bloke next to me that we are on the verge of something special here ?‍♂️ and I was sure that football was coming home when England played Italy in the final !!

Talking of things people got wrong…

I was looking at the stats on the ceiling of the South Stand at the last home match and I hadn’t appreciated that Billy Wedlock had a gap in his time with us. So I looked him up and he played a few games for us in 1900-01 but we rejected him as not being good enough. He then played semi-pro at Aberdare before we resigned him in 1905 and we then had our purple patch (promotion to Div 1, Div 1 runners-up, FA Cup runners-up) and he played 26 times for England. So whoever at City rejected Billy Wedlock at age 20…..!

I was convinced that a defender would stop the Walshy shuffle (but they never did)

I was sure we were getting to the league cup final in 1989 (until Walshy hit the post at the end of normal time; we lost in extra time)

I was convinced we would beat Rovers at Trumpton in 1990 and win the championship (but we lost 3-0 and also gave the championship to them)

I was sure we were going to beat Brighton in the play-off final in 2004 (and was gutted when we didn’t)

I thought the East End was the east end until they built the South Stand.

Yep....I said to Mrs RR he'll take us to the PL in two seasons. Went away on holiday and by the time I was back he had disappeared.

Ha, same!

Got married on the day of the Millwall game, went to Rome on the Monday (early) morning for a week. Picked a paper up in the departure lounge a week later, to read that Millen was in charge after Coppell left. Had to read it about 3 times before I could take it in.

Harry Kane =Nothing more than a one season wonder

Tin man will use his right foot

Can remember Kane playing against us for Millwall and just looked a big lump

Think he missed a header from about 6 yards and can remember thinking he was never going to make it, wonder what happened to him after that...

David Kelly kept doing so well against us, I was convinced we were going to sign him. Never happened.

Had we done so you can guess what would then have happened to his goalscoring!

When I was a young kid (6 or 7) we started playing football at primary school...................I heard the term "offside", I honestly thought it was a case of if you were a right back or right winger,, you couldn't stray to the left wing, etc !  Made sense to me . ?

Similarly, when I was at junior school I thought that right and left backs were not allowed to go over the half way line.

You know what, I think that was "a thing"...... if I was a full back ,the teacher would say we had to stand on the respective corners of the pen area !   None of this  newfangled  over-lapping FBs for him !

Great thread, not sure how I’ve only just seen it.

I remember telling anyone who would listen that Terry Cooper had wasted £10k on a complete headless chicken when he signed Keith Curle. I had seen him play for Torquay & Rovers and wasn’t at all impressed.

That was one player I didn’t see going on to pull on an England shirt, T.C. had a cunning plan though…..

When I was a young lad in the early '60's I thought that if a goalie made a save if was a goal to his side, also I thought that fireman started fires, I came to the conclusion I may have been incorrect in these assumptions ?

I hope this shows properly, but I present for the enjoyment of the thread my first ever OTIB post.

The thread was about Tyrone Barnett, a player who I now could not point out in a line-up of one, and in January 2014 I said: "Good signing and great to see some positive business being done."

My posts remain of this quality.

You are right. I was at school in the 60s, I was a left winger and scored the best goal I could ever have done, the ball came from the right, I drifted into the middle and hit a shot from the edge of the penalty area (bear in mind it was the old ball, heavy when wet, luckily it was a dry day) straight past the keeper into the far corner. All my team mates were happy as was I, until the teacher called me over and told me I was out of position and should stay on the left wing, he then gave the inside left (left sided striker to you youngsters) a massive rollocking for not being in the position to take the shot instead of me.  Glad times have changed for the better.

Him, Assombalonga and Tomlin absolutely bullied us in the home game earlier that season before he signed.

But he was absolutely woeful!

Must admit, that first January had me even ore concerned about Cotts as Manager.

I may be wrong - it was a long time ago - but wasn’t he the defender who suffered a horrific leg injury during our tour of Botswana?

I thought he had played well until then.

Actually, I think I may have mistaken the player - I’m pretty sure he signed from Watford?

Nosworthy, ex-Watford / Sunderland

Osborne - was injured in Botswana.  Might well have started the season ahead of Flint!!

I bet many people though that VAR would ensure right decisions would always made (quickly) and eliminate any uncertainty or controversies.

Id be amazed if anyone thought that to be honest. It was obvious from the already existing debates that you can watch the same event a dozen times and people will have different conclusions.
