bcfcnick
Mark Hughes, Roy Keane, Chris Hughton , Mick McCartney & Sam Alleradyce. Pearson gets lumped in with some of the old-fashioned managers who relied on discipline and giving players a hard time . He demands a lot but he's a lot smarter than that and generally all the players who have played for him are quite glowing in their praise for his man management. I'm not saying all the managers above are old school but we did pick the right guy from those who would be labelled 'experienced' and one who has been motivated (and stubborn) enough to transform the Club at all levels without whinging about lack of funds. He's brought in academy players out of necessity to some extent but he's done it willingly and astutely.
Robbored
We’re lucky to have Pearson in my view. The more I see his interviews the more he impresses me. He’s very honest, says it as it is and his deep knowledge of the beautiful game and what it takes to build a successful team is there for all to see. It’ll be a sad day when he retires or moves on. 8

It did look for all the world that Hughton was the nailed on choice and almost unanimous favourite among fans. However, had we got him we probably wouldn't have got Pearson, who seems to have been doing well in the tough circumstances he inherited post LJ and MA. Phileas Fogg
Houghton - on paper, I can see why it was appealing. I just don't think he'd have worked here. Our fans tend to warm to more salt-of-the-earth types (GJ, SC, NP) - and don't warm to people who aren't naturally charismatic and/or talk in fluffy detail (SO'D, LJ, Coppell). With that in mind, I don't think Houghton would've been a good fit.

I mean I’m not a fan of his whining as a manager but he’s not exactly the worst is he? No, that is fair, but in his last 2/3 jobs, he has overspent on average players, seen teams plummet down the league and been sacked whilst staring at relegation. Each team has then improved since removing him. For me, his stock as a manager is very low and I have no doubt West Brom would have gone down this year had they stuck with him. I would say his failings at Villa, despite spending fortunes, then his poor time at Sheffield Wednesday, before nearly relegating Newcastle suggest he is not a manager you would want at your club anymore. West Brom was the final straw and exposed him to me, as someone who can buy success, but if it fails to click, could cripple and ruin a club. Cue his next gig at Ipswich! Big Sam and his body of work at Bolton was extremely impressive, and he varied tactics based in opposition. Within the same framework but probably physicality etc depended on the opposition, budgets, home or away etc. I think you need quite good man management ability too in order to firstly persuade players such as Okocha, Djorkaeff Campo, Hierro and the rest to join a club like Bolton, yea PL but bottom third and then buy into a very strict framework. Sometimes it can just click at a certain club however as he hasn't really been outstanding elsewhere over a long period of time tbh but as well as pound to point ratio he was also rather innovative, Prozone, encouraging a greater emphasis on spending on youth and training than was typical of a lot of clubs at that time etc. Hughton did alright at Newcastle and was unfairly sacked, Big Sam also unfairly sacked at Blackburn too at around the same time. Hughton did fine at Brighton but probably ran his course, similarly at Norwich. Mick McCarthy did well up to a point although seemed to have certain limitations at Wolves in the PL say, varied mid-market foreign players he perhaps didn't tailor tactics well enough . Otoh he has done a good job in a variety of places. Edited April 15, 2023 by Mr Popodopolous
