"Smith Says... Poor defence cost us game".

No shit, Denis.

Dave Thompson involved, I expect.

A recurring theme. Dreadful.

WTF was he thinking?

He swapped him for Andy May, a decent Championship midfielder for a bomb scare central defender who played like he had his boots on the wrong feet.

When he got sacked Snith was bleating about not being backed, well if you’re going to sign shite like that (& Brian effing Mitchell) what do you expect?

Osman got plenty of flak but the defenders he brought in, Shail, Munro at least could bloody defend.

What’s going on with those ‘north of the river’ flags?

Wasn’t ‘The Fellowship’ in Filton? Last time I checked, Pucklechurch, I’d swear was north of the City Centre.

Puts paid somewhat to the great saggy myth of the Bristol divide. Much of North Bristol was in my time, and still is, ours.

TBF, I’d give them their Lockleaze and Eastville enclaves though.

I was about to say the same thing. Surely The Fellowship was a proper Rovers pub seeing its slap bang in the middle of Horfield

When he came here he did a chat in a Pub we ran a coach from. He told us that we wouldn't need a keeper he was that good.

Then again , Denis did like a beer :laughcont:

Christian Vieri, mind - he turned out half decent.

You think that’s mad, the following year Notts County won it, they beat Ascoli 2-1 Devon White (!) scored the winner & Oliver Bierhoff was playing for Ascoli.

Interesting some on here dismissing West Ham’s exploits this week. Would be amazing to see City in Europe in anyway possible.

I wonder why there isn’t a European competition for 2nd tier teams.  Perhaps it’s considered not enough of a money maker although there’s loads of decent sized clubs at our level here and in Europe so I think it would be popular with fans.

I think ‘The Fellowship’ was frequented by several City ‘fans’ back in the day.

None to distant Southmead certainly had more than a red tinge in the 70’s. Infact, can remember, occasionally, on the old East End the chants of Southmead/Knowle West usually followed by Rangers/Celtic. Southmead weren’t outnumbered either. Horfield was pretty mixed too, with lots of City graffiti.

It was pretty interesting living in ‘border country’ in those days with some quite surprising (to me at least) neighbourhood allegiances to red/blue. Can remember, to my cost, going into Redland which I assumed was solid City, but turned out as home ground to a bunch of Sags. Tended to tread carefully outside my patch after that somewhat uncomfortable experience! That said, knew some of the their ‘legends’ who resided in my neighbourhood, and was good friends with one of them and had more blue friends than red and still do, including best man and each others weddings.

Late 60's early 70's Bristol's twin town is Bordeaux. City played Bordeaux H & A. I'm told we had played Hannover, another twin city, H&A a few years before.

When Juventus came to England for the Anglo Italian Cup, they managed to fit in a friendly at AG. 4-0 to City!

Often though the same, second tier Europa competition would be awesome.

I lived opposite the Felly for about a year when Ernie ran it and it was City. After the LDV semi we lost at the Mem in 2007, we walked back down Filton Ave and there was a ring of old bill around The Felly. Once they knew we were City they let us in.

Imagine the embarrassment of having one of the closest pubs to your ground being home to your rivals, whilst you had to walk past and go to the shitty Bulldog ?

I think the Anglo Italian cup was stopped due to the carnage between fans in some of the other ties.

Can't remember if that's the article I read a few weeks ago when I was looking it up for some reason.

Plenty of City in Southmead as far as I know too.

Memory is definitely fading but didn't city and rovers literally flip a 50p coin to see who would go through to this competition?

I can also confirm that lockleaze at this time had plenty of City fans on rovers doorstep. It wasn't easy being a city fan as rovers seemed to have the edge over city during this era on the pitch. Lockleaze school certainly had it's fair share of City fans even back then !!

My cousin comes down occasionally from Manchester ( Utd fan for his sins ) always comes when city are at home so we can get a game in , so he knows all about us and the tinpot lot but the things that he can’t get his head round was City having a pub right by there ground in the middle of what is supposed to be there patch , ? again the gift that keeps giving

It was undoubtedly exciting to see City in Europe but like the JPT before the final the crowds for this competition were awful.

Our 2 home games against teams we had never heard of, like Cosenza only had about 4000 there & having missed Pisa, I went to Cremonese, which was played on a work day December afternoon in front of about 500.

There just wasn’t the interest, especially in Italy, to keep it going, whether there was any violence or not.

Second tier football (Germany aside) is really poorly supported in Europe, we are the only country that has a league where even the third tier can have a Derby or Portsmouth sized club, so no one else would be up for this.

You and me both, but as you say, the Anglo-Italian fizzled out due to lack of spectator interest.

Anyway, we won the Anglo-Scottish Cup which is an (ahem) European trophy and one that West Ham never claimed. Although, to be fair, they never played in it. ?

EDIT: Just checked that assertion and they did play in the Texaco Cup, which was an Anglo-Scottish-Irish version of the same thing.

Can recall seeing a massive Bristol city flag at le tournoi, I think that had the fellowship on, I could be mistaken, but they deffo came from filton one was a sound kid called Andy who got banned for the pitch invasion against rover's in the 90s

Aaahhh Le Tournoi. 1997, year before France '98 IIRC. Was at the Parc des Princes for England v Brazil, and remember plenty of City there.

The game was tedious, but the rest of the night in Paris was quite possibly the best and funniest night of my life...?

We came close, but not exactly what you mean in 1992. Steve Bull of Wolves had partnered City's Dziekanowski in attack for a second division select team against their Italian counterparts. There's some decent sides in Bundesliga 2 next season.

With no Papa John or Champs League games to play, we could have dates available if the interest is there.

Sadly it's not available dates, or even interest of Clubs. Without large wodges of cash nothing gets done.
Unless TV and advertising see a profit, it wont happen.

Yes I was and I had a good day out for less than a shilling

That would probably be the lovely time you had the day you went to Bangor and opened a bottle of cider.

But don’t worry, I won’t tell about your escapade with Jack on the way back.
