Anyone bidding on ebay auction for match worn freight rover trophy final shirt?

Recommended Posts

The semi final against Hereford was great fun.

Used to stand in the lower Williams nearest the East End. Always boisterous.

Maybe the shirt was from a game in the lead up to the final. Season 85/86.

I’ve often wondered that too. No idea why. It was the only kit of the 1980s not to have the robin badge, and it was first worn in 1983 so a year after our near extinction. There had been at least one kit before then that had the badge so it wasn’t as if it was the first kit under the new company. I was only 8 years old so only have vague memories of City’s early-80s era.

After going bust, Ashton Gate 8 and all that, the club was “Bristol City 1982 Limited”. That’s where the 82 bit came from. No idea why we didn’t use a badge though. I always quite liked the BC82 thing for some reason….. better than a roadkill robin, that’s for sure.

People claim what they want on eBay and eBay don't care as they will take their slice of the pie after an unsuspecting buyer has basically been ripped off. You only have to look at all the Banksy fake stuff that gets sold through there (and plenty of "auction" houses"). Even if you report something that is 100% fake they will rarely remove it.

Good luck! The players who had them know how rare they were and won't part with them.

I'm not specifically looking for a match worn one nor one specifically from the 1987 FRT final
a regular 1986-1988 away shirt version would also be great

There is truth in that...but the opposite also happens.

I inherited a vast collection of signed vinyl and memorabilia.

I had people report that it was fake...only one person, and it was taken down immediately. Even though I provided evidence of the autographs being signed in person.

There are a lot of self proclaimed experts in collectors circles, that often haven't got a clue.

And sometimes people are just spiteful as they can't afford it and want it in their collection.

Are there many out there? I'm not constantly looking but do keep an eye out for older City shirts and haven't ever seen one from that season pop up.

We had a match worn one in the family but the player asked for it back :( Can't blame him, it's a beauty.

I'm hoping there are quite a few still in existence, they were an official club shop item
I distinctly remember beryl selling them and wembley 1987 versions from the old portacabin

That must be a rarity, and guess it is pot luck who receives the complaint their end and removes a listing?

I used to go on an art forum and loads of the eBay fake stuff got highlighted on there, multiple listings got reported and I never seen a single thing get taken down. One seller had made thousands selling the same fakes multiple times, and even got reported to Action Fraud for months on end by multiple people, still nothing was done about it.

I never even remember realising this - I'm sure it was obvious but I don't think it caused a fuss. Obs if we had the internet back then there'd be a 500 page thread of outrage on yeoldeotib.com

Price is fair at the moment for what appears to be genuine 1986 hirerite shirt but its clearly not one match worn at wembley

It may be a genuine replica shirt from 1986, but the style of number isn't correct for a match worn shirt. The numbers that season had a red line border on them.

Could be a reserve or youth team shirt, or just a fans replica who put their own number on it.

Difficult to compare to this picture as the red line isn't the outline, where as the pic on the eBay account is

It is odd though that they have no picture of the actual number

If you expand the photo showing the number 4, you can see it's hand stitched and not on straight. The last bit was common back then though.

I collect City shirts and IMO it's certainly not a shirt which was worn or taken to Wembley in 1986. IMO it's not even a shirt from the 1985/86 season!

The 1986 wembley shirt was totally unique, and printed for the occasion. The logos, printing, badges were different sizes to the regular season shirts, and totally unique to that day.

The main shirt style was used from Dec 1983 through to the end of the 1985/86 season (it was replaced in July/Aug 86 by a shirt which brought back the robin, and was in used for just 6mths at the very start of the 86/87 season, then the white band shirt was introduced in Dec '86), so it crossed several seasons, but there were subtle differences...

Player shirts (excluding the goalkeeper) from Dec 83 onwards in the 83/84 season, and also in the full 1984/85 season, had the B.C. 82 stamped inline with the T in Hirerite. In 1985/86 the B.C. 82 was stamped inline with the outside edge of the last E in Hirerite. Extra nerd points, but in the 85/86 season the player shirts also had a mix of old and new Bukta logos.

The number on this specific eBay shirt is machine stitched, not hand-stitched as being suggested here, see below. In 1985/86 all player numbers were pressed on, along with badges, sponsors and logos.

If this is a players shirt, then there is a chance it something from the 83/84 or 84/85 season, but if I were a betting man then this is a replica 84/85 shirt with a number which has been put on ad-hoc with a sewing machine by somebody.

You’ve got a load of info there, so seem the perfect person to ask.

I’ve always really liked this particular shirt design, but I can’t remember this design ever being available for fans to buy, because I would certainly have bought one myself.  I thought replica shirts first became available to buy from around ‘86 or ‘87, but do you have any info on that?

I’m guessing this ebay shirt was part of the batch supplied to the club and would have been numbered by the club when required.

With the number being stiched, it won’t have been officially done by the club, but there must have been a few un-numbered spares knocking around at the club and this could be one that someone has acquired and numbered themselves, couldn’t it?

From what’s been discussed on this thread, it certainly isn’t one from the 1986 Wembley Final for sure.

Replica shirts were a thing in the 1970s, certainly around the promotion winning season. I don't know about before then as I was either too young or not yet born.

I think the first replica shirts were sold by Leeds around ‘76 and it was a while before other clubs picked up on the trend and only in kids sizes at first I think.

Maybe it was only the adult sized shirts that were introduced in the mid ‘80’s at City.  I always used to get the new adult sized shirts and I think the first one I got was around ‘86.  I definitely wasn’t aware of adult sizes being sold in the City shop before that, though I stand to be corrected on that.

I’d always been under the impression that before the mid ‘80’s, if you wanted to get hold of a team shirt, you had to drag it off a player’s back during a pitch invasion!!!

Ha, I never thought of that. The ones I'm referring to from the 70s are kids sizes. I remember my first being the coffer sports one when I was 12 or 13. I really don't remember whether I kept up with shirts, but I know I wore a white long sleeved sweat shirt with Wembley stadium printed on it when we were there in 86. I think it had the road to Wembley results on the back.

I never had a kids shirt, as I’m from the lethal wooden hand rattle era, so shirts weren’t on the menu!!!

I’ll have to get my stuff out of the loft one day and check what I’ve got, but I think my first was probably the special Wembley ‘87 shirt.

Probably just nostalgia, but they felt more special back then, but that could just be because of what happened in ‘82.  To me, out stuff now feels a bit cheap and nasty in comparison.

Well, that certainly caused some interest and a bit of a feeding frenzy.  Final price of £454.00!!!

Such a shame that somebody out there, IMO, has been ripped off by a false description.

Just to show my thinking that this shirt is from the 1984/85 season, not the 1985/86 season, I dug out the team photos from the 2x seasons.

Note the position of the B.C 82 badge. In the 1984/85 season the B.C. 82 is stamped inline with the T in Hirerite (just like the bay shirt). In 1985/86 the B.C. 82 was stamped inline with the outside edge of the last E in Hirerite.

I was watching it at the end and it certainly looked like a bit of bidding fever going on.

There had to be at least two people who were desperate to get it, to be able to push the price that high.

Wonder if there’s someone thinking ‘what the hell have I done’, when they woke up this morning.  Being super-competitive, or prone to getting bidding fever are the two most dangerous things in an auction.

Yes, completely makes sense what you say.

I notice the seller amended their listing just after the discussion on here. They changed   the description to say it was a match worn shirt, but wasn’t actually worn in the Final.

I can’t imagine anybody bidding anything like that price for any old shirt of that era though, so either someone put on an early auto bid before the listing was amended, or they haven’t read the description well enough.

I doubt there will be any buyers remorse unless they stumble across this thread and see they've very likely bought a ringer.

Bidding history below. It looks like 5 people on the final day went up agasint each other, with the eventual winner coming in at around £183, and manually upping their bid several times against the others...

Have I read the bids right? £454 for Mickey Mouse cup shirt? Surely it’s a wind up…………..:dunno:

Obviously some people put a lot more value on the 'Mickey Mouse Cup' than you do RR 🙂

Really?………:cool2:

I used to find that being in it was a really embarrassing reflection on our club. It is and always has been a trophy for the also rans.

I’m delighted that City are no longer in it.

I doubt there will be any buyers remorse unless they stumble across this thread and see they've very likely bought a ringer.

Bidding history below. It looks like 5 people on the final day went up agasint each other, with the eventual winner coming in at around £183, and manually upping their bid several times against the others...

Interesting.

Looks like that winning bidder waited until the last minute of the auction and slammed a massive bid in.  All the bids after that were automatically getting blown out the water by that huge winning bid.  Makes you wonder what their top limit was?!

For teams in the lower leagues, it was great if you got to the later rounds.  Although crowds in the early rounds were crap, it got a lot more serious when a trip to the twin towers started to loom ever bigger.

Let's be honest, that was the only way lower league clubs were going to get to Wembley in those days and I view those times with real fondness.  Ok, there was that element of standing on the Wembley terraces and looking out onto the  pitch, and wishing you were actually at the FA or League Cup Final, rather than the Freight Rover Trophy, but I certainly wouldn't have missed it, or the Hereford semi's  .......... that said, there's nothing that would have persuaded me to stump up £454 quid to by a ringer shirt purportedly associated with it either!

There certainly are BT and I guess all us City fans come into that category too.  How else can we keep coming back every year with renewed hope that this year could be the one when deep down, we all know what the reality with this club will be 🤔

That’s my point Brizzle.

Exactly and as we were in the lower leagues, it was totally appropriate for our position.

After seeing that Terry Cooper interview with him in tears of pride after us beating Bolton, I'll never doubt the value of that competition to him, especially when you look at the honours he enjoyed with Leeds.  That was us rising from the ashes of 1982 and there was nothing embarrassing about seeing the club beginning to find its way back to a respectable place again.  Whilst I'd never want to see us in that competition again, it was just what we needed at that time to give the club a huge lift and some self-belief.

Everyone to their own though.

Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be Brizzle.
