Bajic

Such is the life of an understudy keeper these days. Someone competent has to occupy that substitute goalkeeper spot on the bench these days. I wouldn't be surprised if there are goalkeepers around who have been ever presents in matchday squads every season for a dozen seasons yet only managed under 20 appearances, including sub ones, in those dozen or so years.

But a club would be incompetent if they didn't employ them.

Wasn't there a keeper in Italy some years back who was signed by nearly all their big clubs (Juve, Milan etc) but only played about 6 games in around 20 seasons?

That wouldn't at all surprise me, yet despite his lack of appearances he played an essential role throughout those years.

I remember an article about him recently. Can't remember his name

I forget his name now, but there was a very promising and well thought of Rovers keeper who signed for (I think) Arsenal.

I’m pretty sure he didn’t make a single EPL appearance during his highly paid stint there, over quite a few seasons, and was transferred recently to a localish club.

Probably a millionaire, but spent several years just sitting on the bench (plus training, of course).

Be amazed if Matt Macey was a “millionaire”.

He had loan spells at Accrington & Plymouth whilst at Arsenal, then got released & joined Hibs.

After that a very short unhappy spell at Luton, had no club for a while then joined Pompey, who have just released him at 29.

It’s tough for reserve keepers. There are international level keepers who only play a handful of games in their whole careers. There was one guy who was at Manchester City for 6 years and Kyle Walker played in goal more times than he did.

Bajic, who knows. If he’s good enough to play in the Championship, he’ll likely stay and get splinters until Max fumbles or gets injured.

A few around sitting on benches, however the name Stuart Taylor rings a bell and I haven't Googled it so I could be wrong.

As several have mentioned already, the goalkeeper I was thinking of was Matt Macey.

Probably not a millionaire but i'm sure he's fairly comfortably off considering he just sit's on his ass for a good few grand a week

Mentally it must he a nightmare, training all week, preparing yourself to be ready IF the call comes, knowing full well it is unlikely to happen, but if it does you have to step in.

It's no wonder that great second keepers often stay in the same division if they are deemed capable. An altogether different type of professional.

Was very good at Pompey second half of last season and played quite a bit. Came back second half of this season but was behind Norris who was outstanding and therefore never featured

You could do that of course, or you could take the adventurous route and get a book out of it like this guy.

The Unstoppable Keeper https://amzn.eu/d/6QvvX0P

A very funny and in places frightening book if you haven't come across it before.

Yeh, it must be mentally terrible for him, and here's me, on a bank holiday Monday moaning about doing my 7th 06:00-18:00 NHS shift in a row, i do feel awful for the poor lamb !!!

Rhys Evans at Chelsea is another similar example of this. Managed to earn £30k a week and never played for his parent club.

True story - he almost made his Chelsea debut in the Champions League, but he would’ve been due a wage hike (maybe a contract extension too) if he did. Instead, a new goalie was signed and he had to sit on the bench instead!

That’s comparing apples with oranges.

He’s a professional footballer, we aren’t.

He plays in a specialist position where only one player can play, if he was a defender or midfielder then the opportunities are clearly far greater.

Your example basically is “ isn’t the world unfair?”

Yep.

Nope, i'm happy with my lot, no point being anything else because life is so short but i certainly don't have any sympathy for a footballer who spends a majority of their time sat on the bench while on a very very good wage

A lot of people’s opinion of Bajic are based on the Lincoln game where a lot of players also didn’t cover themselves in glory

Hopefully he can get a chance in a early round league cup game to show whether he is a viable option to come off the bench or if another goalkeeper is needed

If he's "happy" he may as well stay, but can't see him displacing Max.

If he was to leave though, surely we'd be looking at improving on Max. I like him, but I don't see a point in bringing someone in to sit on the bench, it has to be someone of equal or better standard than Max and challenge his place.

Bajic hasn’t played since because Max has been fit for every single game.

Both Pearson & Manning were content with having him on the bench for the last 44 league games of last season.

He has 9 Ligue 1 games under his belt from his time at St. Etienne & around 30 at Ligue 2 level.

None of us really has a clue how he would perform if given a chance, there were absolutely loads on here saying Max wasn’t good enough, look how that turned out.

If he decides to move on this summer we’ll replace him, if he doesn’t then he’s our second keeper again next season.

As well as a lot of appearances for the French youth teams which would suggest he can't be awful... Seems odd to want to write off our 2nd choice goalkeeper after one poor performance 2 years ago when he was 20 years old...

We were also content to have Mebude sit on the bench, look how that turned out!  :)
