Yu Hirakawa - OFFICIALLY SIGNED

Kagawa went from Cerezo in J-League and got himself into the Dortmund first team almost straight away.

By the time he signed for Dortmund he already had 13 caps for Japan

Some Japanese players don't always do well in Europe though, Muto and Gen Shoji for example. I thought Shoji looked great in the World Cup, he then went to Ligue 1 never performed and went back to Japan. And ironically now plays in the same team as Hirakawa.

But again, he didn't tell you it was this guy either!

It's just fans speculation and guesswork (probably correct but irrelevant)

Re-read what I said - I said it may well not have been this bloke.

But it is totally undisputable that Tinnion said two had agreed and were being finalised that day. That clearly was false (or misguided).

It’s not about this signing - it’s about a pattern of really, really poor communication. And that will always lead to speculation - so again, it is totally on the club.

Not sure I've been this hyped for us to sign a player for.. maybe ever..

Although I admit to being a bit of a Japanese obsessive and plan to visit next year. But the talent that's come from J-League has been fantastic over the last 5-10 years. And we might be signing the best player in the league!?

I was lucky enough to go just before the pandemic (well, I actually left Tokyo for Osaka the same day that news broke of the cases on the cruise ship), it really is the best place in the world bar none.

The love for sport and music is on another level, and so is pride for anyone in Japan making it ‘big’ outside of the country will be worshipped, as seen in his goodbye game.

I’ve said before, but AG & Bristol is going to be absolutely full of Hirakawa fans, and I’d bet one game in particular will be a carnival like atmosphere for him.

That's an interesting point. But I would consider Kagawa the start of the trend of Asian players finding their feet in Europe. Maybe not previously as desired as now.

My wife & daughter went to Tokyo & Kyoto last year, they absolutely raved about it.

People are unbelievably friendly & helpful.

Very lucky! One of the last places in the world to reopen to tourists after Covid. I went to South Korea in late 2022 and hoped to visit Japan as well but they were still closed to tourists (except package guided ones) then a month later it reopened fully. Beyond gutted.

Went to Seoul in 2013, fantastic place.

Would go back in a heartbeat.

As to how good a player from the Austrian Bundesliga & J League turn out to be (& I’ll give them plenty of time to adapt) we’ll see, but it is some stretch to see a player with no full international experience as a “superstar”.

Indeed. And one thing I’ll say is that historically as a fanbase we’ve been pretty prone to hyperbole when we sign international players. Recent examples of Nagy and Massengo spring to mind - from their first games you’d think we’d signed the second comings of Hoddle and Keane. The likelihood is that either - if they do come off - will be stuttering at best to start and we can’t make an accurate judgement on them until probably October earliest with the cultural (mainly for Yu), stylistic and standard differences considered.

The reason there is typically a British premium is because of the greater certainty of a “sure thing” as there is less adaptability needed.

I’ve got no issue with the signings but I’m not going to be screaming we’ve got a superstar or shitshow until he’s had chance to adapt - whether he has a poor or a good start.

Putting aside how good or bad he is, i really hope Yu can settle here. Completely different country/culture. I wonder if he knows anyone here or if/what the club is going to do to support him and help him settle.

Massive change for him i suspect (could be wrong) and this really shouldn't be underestimated how difficult it can be for some.

Could easily impact him on the pitch.

Well they have all the machines in Failand. You have to be consistent. They aren’t going to take everything out to Portugal including jump plates, ultrasounds etc etc. I’d rather do it properly than him miss a day. We’d all be moaning that the medical wasn’t done properly with the right equipment if he got injured.

The club literally can’t win, can it 😂

I was being very tongue-in-cheek. Hence the reference to the Green Party and carbon etc. which is a load of old bollocks isn’t it 🤣

Well, thankfully we’re way past the days of shoving them in a hotel next to the casino on anchor road.

I think that Matt Parsons is now the player liaison officer. He’d have normal duties when it comes to new signings - accommodation, Uk bank account et. (and I have no idea if Yu speaks English so there would be aspects such as language lessons) but I’d also imagine he’s been tasked with “understanding” the local Japanese community (assuming there is one?)

We shouldn’t fall down on helping him settle but it will be down to how he is in the end and you can never quantify that fully.

Really?

I was there around the same time? For work, and stayed in Gangnam. I found the people rude and the shiny glass fronted super buildings hid what was essentially shanty towns behind them.

Japan, on the other hand, is a beautiful and fascinating country. I've been lucky enough to go 3 times. The people are wonderful.

The last time I was there, I stayed in Yochaiichi near Nagoya. Coming back, I flew from Nagoya to Nirata, going over Mount Fuji, then flew from Nirata to Heathrow. The jet lag wasn't too bad, certainly not as bad as going the other way anyway.

Yep, stayed with my sister in law & her bloke (now husband) in the very North East of the city, almost at the last metro stop (Junggye).

We were the only non Koreans around for miles but everyone we met was super friendly & fascinated to meet Europeans.

Same experience as we traveled around.

Gangnam is just coffee shops and glass buildings. My favourite thing about Seoul is that although it’s such a massive city, it’s so easy to escape into nature. It’s surrounded by beautiful hills. I love both Korea and Japan and try to visit both every couple of years!

I went on a South Korea and Japan trip and got back about 6 weeks ago. I loved Seoul, as you said it's a massive city but it sprawls over several valleys making it seem a lot smaller. It seems like the quality of life is excellent and it feels like it's the golden age to be young and Korean.

I loved Japan too; we could learn a lot from their culture and hospitality. I know the yen has crashed but I couldn't believe how cheap it is over there at the moment - I came back with about 7kg of additional luggage and a further 10kg on my waistline!

Gangnam is indeed horrible. I never got the chance to explore too far tbh, apart from the border, but found the business people I dealt with extremely aggressive. Clearly not a good example of the Korean people then.

I’ve done a handy phrase for Brian to use at his interview that will see them undoubtedly accept that deal:

Poor kid must be knackered though, playing saturday morning (our time), then travelling for God knows how long to get to Bristol.

Also doing all the photo shoot and interview stuff, then to Portugal tonight/tomorrow, followed by a trip back to France for the Olympics.

Busy boy.

Based on the fact his game finished at 8pm is JST then it's probable he didn't travel to the UK immediately after the game. Especially with all the farewells etc.

It's much more likely he left Japan on Sunday morning in Japan and arrived here in the UK sometime yesterday afternoon/evening. Then a night in a hotel and then do the medical etc today.

I once visited a factory that manufactured guff. It was on guff street and won 1st place in the guff awards. The CEO was a Mr Guff and his family had been making guff for over a century. With this in mind, they still make less guff than you have been spouting over the past week.

I won’t rise to your pathetic post.

Everything I have stated has been based purely on fact.

As you will have read the medical has now taken place and the formal club announcement will follow. As I informed.

Nah I think you've just been whinging it based on information that was already out there and you've incorrectly tried to fill in the blanks.

On the 1st July you said "expected to announce in the next few days" and also said "struggling to get the deal over the line due to work permit/international clearance" @Davefevs corrected you on this.

A week on from the 1st of July isn't a few days.

You then said the intention was to announce him on Friday despite the player still being in Japan.

One minute you say the announcement is Monday and the next it's Tuesday but then it could be either.

You've then been all over the place whether it's a loan or a transfer.

I’m still in the @Corsham Alf is “ITK” group. Like a lot of us, we get a bit of the story (maybe not directly from horses mouth), but can be a bit keen to post “it’s done” without knowing the true timings and what is meant by “it’s done”.  To be fair, Tinnion ain’t got that but Sussed yet either, so I’m not gonna bash Alf for done shifting timings.

I’m happy he’s eventually going to sign.  With the Olympics I ain’t that fussed when it’s announced because it’s largely irrelevant to seeing him play in the short term.

I did it once when I was told Nige was sacked…and he wasn’t, which made it doubly-bad.

I hear things, but I’m 3rd / 4th hand, so prefer to get my vizzes ready, watch a bit of video, and wait and see if someone else breaks it!!!

On the subject of ITK’s I have quite a good story I can share now.

I knew about Ashley Williams signing prior to announcement and so posted it on here all those years ago but couldn’t say how I knew. Plenty of time has passed now though.

I was at work one morning taking in parcels from the postie and we got chatting football, turned out he also did Failand. And that morning he had a pair of boots literally with Ashley Williams name on. I was like a kid at Christmas. He sworn me to secrecy on it but I’ve moved jobs twice since then I so reckon we’re clear!

This is somewhat off-topic (although there have been posts above about Japanese culture) but me and my wife recently finished the TV series 'Tokyo Vice'. I loved every minute of it: The better half, not so much.  Now I have that song by The Vapors going round in my brain. :)

Actually, come to think of it, I loved the film 'Lost in Translation'.
