They were beaten 2-0 by Reading last Saturday, after which their manager, ‘stressed that City must sign new players ahead of the weekend Championship opener against Bristol City.’

For many seasons Hull have worn black and amber shirts with black shorts. These black and amber colours are where Hull's nickname, the Tigers, originates from.

They have Alfie Jones who (along with me) is all the way from Long Ashton and went to school at Backwell.

They sold forward Ozan Tufan to Trabzonspor in June for an undisclosed fee. The 29-year-old Turkish international scored 18 goals in 79 league appearances for the Tigers after joining from Fenerbahce in July 2022.

Their winger Jaden Philogene moved to Aston Villa in mid July and Ipswich Town completed the signing of their centre-back Jacob Greaves on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The Tigers have recruited former Germany youth international Marvin Mehlem and as mentioned above Swiss goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi. They also signed defenders Ryan Giles and Cody Drameh following their respective moves from Luton Town and Leeds United

In June they triggered an option to turn Ryan Giles' loan deal from Luton Town into a permanent move. Giles, 24, joined the Tigers in January and made 17 Championship appearances as they finished one place outside the play-off places. Earlier this month they signed German midfielder Marvin Mehlem from Darmstadt 98 for an undisclosed fee. Mehlem, 26, has signed a two-year deal to link up again with an old compatriot in Yorkshire, their manager.

They could add Manchester City defender Finley Burns on loan before Saturday’s Championship curtain-raiser.

Their well known fans include John Prescott given his history in British Politics, it is not a shock that John Prescott is a fan of Hull City. Another one of Hull's famous fans is singer Sinitta. Omar Sharif, before passing away in 2015, the Egyptian film star Omar Sharif was one of the most famous fans of the Tigers.

Sitting proudly on the River Humber Hull is one of the UK’s oldest cities. Well-known for its rich maritime history, The Hull Blitz of World War 2 and as UK City of Culture 2017, outsiders could be forgiven for thinking that’s where the interesting facts end. But it’s not! Hull invented famous every day items

Liquid crystal displays (LCD), Lemsip and boiled sweets were all created in our fair city.

Their telephone boxes are cream 

That’s right. Even the local telecoms dance to the beat of their own drum. Hull’s phone network was never run by the Post Office who were originally responsible for supplying the red phone boxes that are synonymous with traditional British culture. Instead the network was run independently by Hull City Council for many years who installed the cream phone boxes. In recent years some few alternative colours have popped up around the city – gold for local Olympic champion Luke Campbell, rainbow for Pride and black and yellow in tribute to local fundraising legend Jean Bishop aka Bee Lady.

Its the home of American Chip Spice

Not only are we the home, we invented it. American Chip Spice was created more than 25years ago and has been something of a cult classic ever since – from sprinkling it on to fresh cooked chips, flavouring meat, stirring into creamy mash potato or garnishing a pizza, it’s a store cupboard staple for every home and takeaway in the local area.

They have their own local lingo

This one is probably what we’re most well-known for outside of the city. Not only is the Hull accent very distinctive from the accents of our other Yorkshire neighbours, but we have some of our own unique words too. Some of our favourites are “maftin” (warm/hot), croggy (lift on a bicyle) and the classic “er ner its sner” (look, it’s snowing).

It houses the world’s largest Yorkshire pudding factory

Starting out as a local company in the mid-1970s, frozen food manufacturer Aunt Bessie’s have stayed true to their roots and kept production in the heart of the city. Today the factory produces an incredible 900 million Yorkshire puddings each and can produce a single bag in just 1.2 seconds, and even been the starred in ITV show Mad in Britain back in 2019.

As the saying goes, it’s never dull in Hull!!

Pubs

The Park View (57 Walton Street, Hull, HU3 6JB) almost directly opposite the stadium car park entrance has always welcomed visiting supporters in the past. This family run pub serves a wide array of beers and has big screens to show live sport as well as housing a burger van outside on match-days.

The Walton Street Social Club (243 Walton Street, Hull HU3 6JR) welcomes away fans as well but you will be charged a £1 entry fee. The club serves very good cheap beer in a friendly atmosphere with a separate area serving food (fish and chips at £6) and other refreshments.

The Boot Room (354-356 Anlaby Road, Hull, HU3 6NS) is located further down Walton Street on the corner of the junction with Anlaby Road. Although this is where a large number of Hull fans congregate before the games, they have welcomed away fans previously and have a number of big screens showing live sport.

Hop and Vine (24 Albion St, Hull HU1 3TG) is a decent pub if you like real ales and ciders.

There are a number of alternative venues in the city centre, including the local Wetherspoon’s The Admiral of the Humber (1 Anlaby Road, Hull HU1 2NT), The New King Edward Bar (which is right next door to the Admiral of the Humber and located upstairs, 1 Anlaby Road, Hull HU1 2NR), The Punch Hotel (Queen Victoria Square, Hull HU1 3RA) and The Hop and Vine (24 Albion Street, Hull HU1 3TH).

Worth seeking out, but not near the ground (a ten minute drive away) is the Olde White Harte. Pies

For a good pie try the Pie Bakery. Known as ‘The Pie of the Tiger’ since their pies have been sold at KCOM stadium, this bakery produces some of the areas favourite pies. They produce gluten-free, vegan and veggie pies that are well-loved. Their pies are full of tasty tender filling with just the right amount of gravy (and we all know how important that is to Yorkshire folk). Impossible to really know how this one will go, but it does seem the proverbial “good time to play” Hull as they don’t appear to have settled down with a reasonable turnover of players and coaching staff, and a pretty horrendous set of pre season results. To repeat the oft made point, we do seem to have a favourable start and need to make the best of it but we do appear very toothless.

The safe money says a 0-0. The “biggest bit” for me though will be whether we carry over the intent from last season or it’s a bit more reserved once again.

Okay a bit of what we may face tomorrow. Hull are virtually injury free fwiw, just the one.

Hull owner wants them to attach relentlessly, it is a cited reason for sacking Rosemior.

They'll probably go 4-2-3-1..either likely Drameh and Giles at fullback or Giles will be high on one of the wings ie wide in a 4-2-3-1.

If we go a back 3, 2 v 1 could be a weak point. Not least if we our Sykes at LWB or something daft.

Otoh if Giles at full back and we play our back 4 into 3 and vice versa as at times in pre-season perhaps we can look to hone in on space behind...is he a natural LB by trade?

Threat and yet opportunity. Both can drift in...room for Sykes on the right, Pring and Bell/Mehmeti on the left.

Owner wanting a certain brand of football could assist away sides too, especially early on with all the changes there.

A “favourable start” SD?

Turn it around, those favourable teams we are playing, what do you think they’re saying about playing us? I reckon they’re probably thinking, bang average Bristol City, decent chance of 3 points there. 

So, probably good that we’ve managed to avoid Leeds and Burnley, but so have most teams and other than that, it’s no more “favourable” a start than everyone else as far as I can see 😁

Edit: I’ve just realised my pessimistic outlook is returning before we’ve even kicked a ball 🤣

Overseas supporters can watch tomorrow afternoon’s match at Hull City (12:30pm kick off).

Robins TV will be streaming the first match of the new Sky Bet Championship season for international fans.

With multi-camera coverage, pre and post-match analysis, passes are available for just £10, or you can purchase an annual pass for £180. 

Leroy Rosenior will be in the studio, with pre-match coverage starting at 12pm. 

Other options include a monthly video pass for £45, while domestic supporters can purchase an annual and monthly audio pass for the 24/25 season with commentary from BBC Radio Bristol.

I think anything less than a point today is going to be disappointing. Compared to Hull we have a settled squad, better depth and less gaps left to fill. Quite excited to see how Hull approach the game. By all accounts Tim Walters sides are very aggressive. Having had a quick read of the Hull forum their fans seem in a similar position to ours, hoping for the playoffs but with the understanding that that needs quite a lot to go right.

It’s the first game of the season, we need to be level, not get on our high horse our new players still need time to gel, Hull will still be a danger to us and still got a fairly decent side, if we win great if we lose there’s still another 45 games!

Currently in Australia and considering this...might stay awake until half time depending on how many Tasmanian ciders I've had by then👀

Bristol Live predicting Bell as a starter. Based on pre season line ups, that's probably what will happen but I don't get it. 

Manning must see something in training that I don't see in matches. 

I think it really is now or never for Sam to show if he had what it takes at this level. 

Or does it say more about the lack of real competition in the wide areas?

Really hoping I have to eat my words in a few hours.

Otherwise, can't wait for the game and to see if a stable side and a full pre season can start to bring in consistent results.

I think there is an argument that we're playing Hull at a good time.  As ever, 1st goal really important,  if we get it, it will reaffirm their fans fears they've had a bad preseason & haven't replaced enough talent.

Personally, I'd be happy with a point, but you can bookmark this & use it for pretty much any away game in this league.

He seems to pop up with goals and seems a bit of a good fox in the box, but his all round play doesn't feel good enough. He has bulked up a bit this summer so see if that might make a difference.
