Popular Post Jerseybean
I started last Saturday’s thread with a reminder about subscribing to OTIB and 40+ new subscribers signed up, thank you. If you enjoy this forum and haven’t yet subscribed please do, it’s only a fiver a year, to subscribe simply follow this link: https://www.otib.co.uk/subscriptions/1/ Having failed to tame the Tigers last weekend we now face the Lions in our opening home league game of the season, with a 3 pm kick off. Last Saturday they lost 2-3 at home to Watford and on Tuesday, in the CC, they won 1-0 at Fratton Park. Their defeat to Watford ended a five-game winning streak in the Championship, while they haven’t lost their opening two games of a second tier campaign since 2013-14 (0-1 v Yeovil, 0-3 v Ipswich). Their nickname stems from their cup run to the Semi Finals in 1900, they were referred to as Lions for their acts of giant killing and the name stuck and was adopted as the clubs nickname and emblem. It did not appear on club shirts as a badge till the 1930's. Tickets here: https://tickets.bristol-sport.co.uk/en-GB/events/bristol city v millwall/2024-8-17_15.00/ashton gate stadium?hallmap Those who have played for for both clubs include Gerard Lavin, Marvin Elliott, Brian Clark, George Saville, Benik Afobe and Joe Bryan. Officials: Ref is Sunny Singh Gill, assisted by Shaun Hudson and Mark Russell, fourth official Charles Breakspear. Some predictions and views: https://the72.co.uk/2024/08/16/bristol-city-millwall-prediction/ In the last six games between us there has been a 0-0 and the rest have been decided by one goal. Recent matches have involved late winners. We are winless in seven of our last eight home league encounters against Millwall (W1 D3 L4) including the most recent clash, a 1-0 defeat at home on New Year’s Day this year. So last season, in a poor game, on New Year’s Day they beat us with a 92nd minute goal at Ashton Gate, https://youtu.be/NFMTsfCLOqg?si=jz-qdjXvXopOoMM7 our team that day was: O’Leary, Tanner, Vyner, Dickie, Pring, James (Gardner-Hickman 54), Williams, Weimann (C, Sykes 54, Cornick 80), Knight, Mehmeti (Bell 71), Conway (Wells 71). Substitutes: Bajic, King, Knight-Lebel, Nelson. In August 2023, at their place, Harry Cornick set-up the winner in the 94th minute as his long throw eventually dropped for skipper Matty James to lash home a flying volley. Our squad was: O'Leary, Tanner, Vyner, Dickie, Pring (Roberts 76'), James, Williams (Naismith 63'), Knight, Sykes (Cornick 64'), Wells (Mehmeti 63'), Bell (Yeboah 85') Subs: King, Wiles-Richards, Knight-Lebel, Araoye. In February 2024 Neil Harris returned as Head Coach: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68359086 and steered them to Championship safety when they finished 13th on 59 points. He has managed Millwall on two previous occasions + their under 21’s along with stints at Cardiff, Gillingham and Cambridge. He made 374 appearances for Millwall scoring 124 goals. As a player Neil Harris' final ever Millwall appearance was as a 73rd minute substitute in a 1-0 defeat at Barnsley on the final day of the 2010/2011 campaign. Harris was 23 when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2001, https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/7639176/millwall-neil-harris-cancer-movember/ I recall Big Tone being accused of supporting Millwall on here a while back! He immediately put the record straight. In 1974 Millwall played the first ever league game on a Sunday and ex Bristol City player Brian Clark became the first player ever in the Football League to score a goal on a Sunday, https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2010/jan/23/first-sunday-football-1974-millwall-fulham Head-to-head we have won 38, lost 36 and drawn 33. They signed striker Macaulay Langstaff from Notts County for an undisclosed fee, in July. The 27-year-old scored 71 goals in 96 appearances for the Magpies, including 42 in 47 matches in their National League promotion-winning campaign in 2022-23, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cger5qdywvno They signed Japhet Tanganga from Tottenham Hotspur on a permanent transfer, in July. The 25-year-old made 18 appearances on loan at The Den last season as the Lions finished 13th in the Championship. Millwall players and the club’s staff have had to come to terms with the passing of popular goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cv22z9lgdlxo they observed a minutes silence (see photo) when they returned for pre-season training. They have ‘retired’ the number 20 shirt in his memory, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c035d9el5dyo In July they signed goalkeeper Liam Roberts on a free transfer from Middlesbrough, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cq5j8r58elwo We are unbeaten in our last five home games in the Championship (W4 D1), although we have only won our opening home match of a league campaign in one of the previous six seasons (D3 L2). We may even get our first glimpse of George ‘buzzing’ Earthy, https://www.bcfc.co.uk/video/interviews/george-earthys-first-interview/ and of course the returning Scott Twine https://www.bcfc.co.uk/city-men-news/twine-returns-to-the-robins/ 7 12

Jerseybean
Neil Harris will not be able to call upon the services of Murray Wallace, Billy Mitchell, Adam Mayor and Zian Flemming for the trip to Ashton Gate, with Japhet Tanganga also missing as he serves the final match of his three-match suspension following a red card at Swansea City on the final day of the 2023/24 season. The Head Coach must decide how many of the side to be victorious at Fratton Park will keep their places in the starting XI; he made six changes in midweek, with Liam Roberts, Wes Harding, Danny McNamara, Alfie Massey, Aidomo Emakhu and Macaulay Langstaff all coming into the side. Kevin Nisbet, meanwhile, is also available should Harris wish to freshen things up in attack.

pongo88
It’s the first home league match of the season so what to expect? This is a very good question and topicold. Are you all sitty comftybold two-square on your botty? Then I will begin. Who has that spare cashey in the pock to escape to the delighty of the footy? Pre match make sure you’re not in hungry mode in your tum so stock up on a Pie of Clarks. It is used very much among the supporter people in a kind of Loblolly of hotchpot which they do eat, called splodge It will be warm. Dehydration can make you go falolloped down the steps so keep the fluid in, but not too much cider as Haze puts you in a daze and woozy woo you go. Try 3 PG Tips in the potty. The clappy happers in Area 51 will woozle you to bouncy bouncy around the ground of deep joy, but don’t clop your kneecabbers on the seats. Oh yes! So off you go trittly down the path to the stadium of footy and if you’re late because of too many pints of the panty dropper cider then oh, folly, folly One last dollop with the alignment of the cosmos. Have you heard it’s in the stars, next July we collide with Mars? Well did you ever? Deep joy (With apologies to Stanley Unwin) 2

ashton_fan
I always remember going to Cold Blow Lane in Autumn 1971, City were on motd and played some lovely football but went down 3-1 after scoring two own goals (Dickie Rooks scored one of them). I can't find the match video anywhere so I guess it must have been lost.

HOZDA
Excited for today! Get a good result and this will be a decent start and hopefully generate enthusiasm for the season. Said it in the Twine thread (somewhere buried!) that a quality he does bring is quality set pieces, and for a change we have players that can capitalise (i.e Dickie, big Rob, Fally). I don't think we will see Twine and Earthy start together (much). Only formation that makes sense is a 3421, and playing that kind of nullifies the wingers we have. Then again, we have been quite fluid in shape so far and some one like Earthy is confident in CM or wider role. Let's wait and see. I personally think they will alternate - it's a long season - sort of like Fally and Sincs up top. Both giving a different outlets and qualities that should cause oppositions problems throughout the game. I do hope with the players at our disposal, we will find a way to break through these deep sitting, low block teams. Has been a crux for many seasons, especially at home. Enjoy all - COYR
