Iain Dowie is being tipped to become the new Crystal Palace manager.

The 38-year-old is currently boss of second division strugglers Oldham Athletic, but is now favourite for the Selhurst Park hot-seat after reportedly holding talks with Palace officials.

Dowie has impressed at The Latics, guiding the club to the play-offs last season and proving astute in the transfer market.

However, Oldham have been beset by financial problems this term and having been forced to sell the majority of his best players, Dowie has spoken of his frustrations at the restraints he has had to endure.

The popular former Northern Ireland international is currently without a contract at Oldham and reportedly still owed outstanding wages.

Although tentative talks have taken place with Oldham's new owners regarding a new contract, Dowie may see the prospect of managing in the First Division too tempting to resist.

With the Oldham boss tipped for a switch to Palace, he is now seemingly out of the running for the Northern Ireland position.

Irish Football Association president Jim Boyce has revealed that Oldham declined to allow Dowie to be interviewed for the position, but their efforts to keep their coveted manager at the club now seem to be in vain.

Boyce denies that Dowie was to be offered the post, but was only to have been interviewed.

He said: ''We only wished to interview Iain Dowie, along with other interested parties. He was not offered the post.''

Wouldn't we just love to know who the other 'interested' parties in the NI job are!!

Steve McMahon has also been interviewed for the Palace job and is by all accounts a golfing pal of Mr Jordan.

If Dowie has no contract and is owed wages then I am surprised that NI were refused permission to interview him and from Palace point of view would they have to pay compensation?

Steve McMahon has also been interviewed for the Palace job and is by all accounts a golfing pal of Mr Jordan.

If he's a golfing pal of McMahon's, then he's also a golfing pal of Danny Wilson's.

In which case, how come Jordan hasn't approached Wils.....

Oh, it's okay, I've worked it out for myself.
