Residents protest against stadium plans

Residents opposed to plans to build a 'super stadium' near their homes are to hold a protest against the new venue.

Developers want to construct the 30,000-seater Severnside Stadium between the villages of Easter Compton and Pilning, near Bristol.

If it goes ahead, the venue could be home to both of the city's professional football teams, and a smaller oval next door could play host to rugby, athletics and greyhound racing events. Super stadium

But local residents say most people living near the 220 hectare (550 acre) site are against the £100m scheme, which they believe will cause major traffic problems for the area.

South Gloucestershire Council is to discuss the project at 1400 GMT on Monday 5 January, and opponents say they will hold a protest outside the council's offices before the meeting.

Northavon MP Steve Webb will also take part in the demonstration and address the council meeting afterwards.

The Severnside site, owned by Redrow Homes, has long-standing planning permission for industrial and other uses.

This is probably the crux of the matter.

Redrow want to build houses but do not have the relevant planning permission. They are using the stadium and other leisure facilities as the carrot to enable them to get planning permission for the houses.
