A standard fitness test usually consists of the following;

*Bleep Test - A type of relay between 2 markers spaced a certain length apart. The player has to run between the 2 markers and touch each before the bleep. The regularity of the bleep increases and thus tests the players endurance levels.

*Blood Test - As the name suggests, various tests are carried out on the players blood to ensure no disease or serious virus is present.

*Cardio-Vascular Monitoring - Various tests are carried out using equipment to monitor the heart, pulse and lungs. These are thorough and will pick up and narrowing of arteries, irregular heart beat and anything else to do with the respiratory system.

*X-Rays - The club will have received the full medical records for the player which will show all injuries and illnesses the player has sustained, length of time he was affected and what treatment was used. The club will have a specialist assess the x-rays to ensure there is no irregularity.

*Height & Weight - Both are measured and assessed.

*Urine Sample - Like the blood test, taken and assessed by specialist.

That is what a standard full medical entails.

Hope this helps.

City Fitness test involves:

1) How quickly can you get the cellophane wrapper off of a packet of Marlboro.

2) How many seconds to get the top off of a bottle of Becks and down it.

3) Stamina test, can you still support your own bodyweight when the nightclub kicks out.

4) "Try this treatment table out, you'll be lying on it a lot"

and the City initiation ritual, the position you will play is to be drawn from a hat.......

Matthews was fit when he arrived but suffered a back injury that has probably caused him more pain than you will ever know and may one day cripple him - but what do you care :D
