Money Well Spent?

£50,000 for a 22 year old 'attacking option' who, and this is the key for me has great pace is arguably money well spent regardless of team requirements.

If the money spent on his capture means we can no longer pursue right sided midfielders then this could proove a concern - the question has danny done the right thing needs to be asked but will only be answered at the end of the season.

I'm not aware if the board have stated that there are no transfer funds avaliable after this purchase.

Lets not forget that prior to Lee Miller signing there was talk or reports that he could 'operate in midfield', i think its clear that we wont be seeing him in a midfield role - from what ive seen of him so far anyway. The bottom line in these situations is that no-one really knows until we see the guy play.

For me pace is a huge asset, with all due respect i think we only need use Ade Akinbiyi as our example. On occassions the guy looked like he couldnt hit a barn door with a shovel and yet he scored 20 odd goals in the first division for a relegated side. Ive always believed that a poor finisher with pace will score more goals than a good finisher with none (without considering 'poachers' a la Robins) - to certain extents obviously, not talking ridiculous comparisons in terms of abilty but if you take 2 players of around the same ability i would not hesistate in saying the one with pace would score 8 goals more a season - especially in the lower leagues.

If your 22 with pace and considered an attcking player i dont care what anyone says, you can play on the wing. If he was 6 years older and had not played on the wing for long periods of his career i would be concerned but at 22 your not exactly set in your ways. If you told Michael Owen to play on the wing, although obviously not as effective as if he was up front you've still got one hell of a problem for the opposition defence to deal with.

Pace scares defences, if this guy has got the pace we hear he has, and he has the ability to cut inside and shoot on his favoured left foot that sounds fantastic to me. It appears many will only be appeased by the headline 'City sign right winger' - its not about filling quoto's for positions, many players no longer have concrete positions - recent examples are Joe Burnells move to midfield, the ability of Kevin Amankwaah to play right back, wing back or right wing - in the premiership Marcel Dessially switching to centre back from centre midfield - players need to be and are versaitaille in todays game - the only thing that matters from our point of view should be;

does this guy actually have ability?

If he does and he's not a high wage earner - presumibly he is not as Danny has said he will 'add competition' (i take this to mean he hasnt been signed on a 'first 11 wage') then i think we could have done well for ourselves.

I've never seen this guy play, but on what I've heard it looks like he's a good buy. He can play on both flanks and up front, which is a major asset. But I remember when Luke Wilkshire said that and it didn't quite go to plan at first... so he's probably got a best position (preferably right wing).

It now means that if he makes our starting lineup, it will have quite a youthful look about it, with a handful of experienced players, so a good balance

I wasn't convinced we needed another player until I heard about Kevin's injury which made it necessary, so hopefully money well spent.

I hope your right.

Firstly, let me say that I wish our new signing all the best with his career at City.

I have never seen him play, so am unable to comment on his abilities and won't until he has been given a chance to show what he can do.

My point is though, it is only money well spent if he is better than what we already have at the club.

We have players coming through the academy that are not being given a fair chance in my opinion and also other young players that are consistently overlooked by our hapless and hopeless Manager.

Lita - I hope will get his chance, but what are the odds of Wilson playing Goodfellow instead of him up front if there injuries to his first choice strikers, and / or losing his place on the bench to him.

Roberts - What's he done wrong then, apart from finish top scorer last year.

He's going to be offski soon and will start doing the business elsewhere.

Marvin Brown - Contary to popular opinion, still seems to get good reviews when playing for the reserves and has never been given a chance.

Cue responses about his lack of goals for the reserves and his lack of goals whilst on loan at a struggling Cheltenham last season, most of which was spent on the right of midfield (coincidently he scored an absolute belter whilst he was there)

Who provided the assist for Leroy's goal against the gas the other night ?

Simon Clist - On the bench, no i'll give you a start, yes you played well so i'll start you on the right, oh you are $hit get the sub on, back to the stiffs with you.

Darren Hawkins - Have a go against Leeds son, now off to Bath with you.

Good experience I know, but you can see where it's going can't you.

Give em their chance Danny or we may as well knock the academy on the head !

Or we could call it the................. FulhamTorquayUnitedBathCityForestGreenRoversCheltenhamTown academy, cos there getting there money's worth out of it.

We'll need to see him play, but DW's clearly looking to move on at least Matthews and probably Marvin Brown as well.

Still leaves LP,LM,CR,MG,LL.

I'm disapointed that Marvin Brown hasn't been given a try on the right wing or even possibly LL.

16 Players out of contract in 2004 so clearly DW has a huge number of options.

Even if it does turn out that Goodfellow's "best" position is Left Wing but that he is capable of "doing a job" on the right wing, would this be so bad?

At times this season Aaron has been shocking which I believe is due in part to the knowledge at the back of his mind that he is the only option Wilson will use if we want pace on the left flank. Signing MG means that if Aaron isn't pulling his weight (which he has been recently) then we can slot MG in on the left and pick Roberts on the right.

In the short-term, MG offers us an option on the right whilst Kev is injured and Robbo is suspended and will provide competition for Robbo when he returns from his ban. Roberts himself has been used with a certain degree of success for brief periods in the past so that helps to prove that even within the existing squad you don't have to be described as a specialist in a certain position to do a good job there.

With MG being able to compete on both flanks (much like a lower division Cristiano Ronaldo?), Wilson will now be able to field pace on both sides of the pitch by selecting the two most in-form players out of Brown, Roberts & Goodfellow and this can only benefit our promotion challenge.

Cue Bell & Burnell filling the wing roles on Saturday!

I must say I agree with Dolman Moaner.

Darren Hawkins is having a blinder had a blinder pre-season and has'nt played since, Marvin Brown is having consistant games in the reserves as provider and scorer and yet he's not got a chance so we now sign 22 year old Goodfellow who is left footed and our main concern is the right wing ??? Marvin has got International School Boy caps and goodfellow came from their reserves.

Of the four players below who jumps out as the best righ sided option ? Where does Marc Sit ? Given the chane I would say that marvin would have scored as many goals as Mrac if not more ......

Marc Goodfellow

Darren Hawkins

Chris Roberts

Marvin Brown

From His Stoke Profile

Few young players can ever have enjoyed a more dramatic entry on to the main stage. Making his first-team debut on his 19th birthday, his late goal within minutes of coming on as a substitute at the Britannia Stadium sent Premiership Charlton spinning to defeat in the Worthington Cup three years ago. A former Academy graduate, he weighed in with five goals to assist in the 2002/02 promotion campaign, although last term started only six games and found the net just once. A winger by inclination, he can also play as a central striker where his considerable pace is always a threat to defenders.

Bearring all of this in mind is he worth 1/6 the value of our Acadamy. NO HE AINT, HE WILL BE A SQUAD PLAYER DISPLACING OUR ACADAMY PRODUCTS!!!:D:D:D:angry:

Yes he is a bad gamble, If it does pay off that he works out yeh great but what about out Acadamy players ? They will be off at FGR, CTFC, Bath etc .... ### Sack Danny if this boy is #### and give Tony Forthrop the job at least he and Leroy gave the acadamy Lads a chance ......
