500 Appearances

I think for once the forum is almost unanimous in respecting Tinman for his 500th appearance. Even some BRFC fans gave their grudging respect.

However, how rare is this? Who and when was the last player to play 500 times for the same club?

My feeling is that this is very unusual and as such Tinman should be getting national coverage. I know he got onto FiveLive but it was only a brief interview.

I wonder who will be the next player to get 500 appearances for their club. Giggs must have a few games under his belt? With the ever mercenary attitude to football this landmark could well be a last for us and many other clubs.

tony adams was possibly the last one. although i wouldn't get too excited by the likes of him and giggs making 500 + for their resepective clubs. it must be fairly easy to stay loyal when you are playing for one of the top 2 clubs in the country.

and i do sometimes wonder how long we would have kept brian if he had a bit of pace and a right foot.

edit: poor english

I think this makes tins something like 5th on the all time appearence list. Only another 4 or 5 appearances to overtake the person above.

I will await the reply form the gurus listing all of the top appearances. I think we all know that Ayteo was top.

Giggs has played 514 games for Man Utd with a fair few more to come I imagine. I'm hard pushed to think of another current player who can match him or Tins for appearances for the same club.

I think that a player has to have had at least 10, (mostly) injury free, constantly selected, years of playing at the same club. This averages out at 50 games per calendar year which is not bad considering the summer months.

There can't be many players who fit the bill though no doubt some statto will point me at a website

Question is, with the financial situation at lower league clubs at the moment, is there ever going to be another footballer topping 500+ in Div 1/2/3?

Looking at our team the only person I could see having a chance would be Docs. Even though he's only around 170 now. Young, should be able to play at next level. Has already resigned once here when he had options to leave for free. etc. etc.

I guess Philips might have a chance if he became a bit more consitant.

I thought Rob Newman made 500 appearances for City? I seem to recollect he started from the youth team when we went bust, and carried on through?

Maybe the Cider Gliders can enlighten me, maybe my braincell went AWOL!

But you're comparing with a different era.

My last comment was meant to suggest that this is an ever rarer achievement in today's context.

Despite Statto's (aka DaveL) best help, I'm unable to track down which current players are getting near to the 500 mark. However, I can tell you that David Seaman played 566 times (all competitions) for Arsenal and he never scored a goal! (Thanks DaveL, you shan't be forgiven  )

Sorry to prolong your agony Chivs, but the all time table of appearances by players for one club can be found at http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/club.htm.

And very interesting reading it makes too.

The record for most league games for a variety of different sides is held by Peter Shilton, who played over 1000 league games in total.

Having given the matter some thought, aided & abetted by Arthur Guinness & son, I believe the answer to the question 'which player in the modern era will next pass the 500 mark with one club' could well be Kevin Pressman at Sheff Wed. He's been there forever & can't recall him ever being transferred or going out on loan that often.

It is interesting to note that the majority of long serving players are Goal Keepers.

Presumably this is to do with the fact that they can carry on playing to a greater age than their outfield counterparts.

Having said that Stuart McCall who is now 39, has just signed a two year extension to his contract at Sheffield Utd.

345 is carey
345 thats pretty good considering he was nowhere a regular earlier in his career. He is much maligned in some quarters, but I think he gets through some excellent work especially "on the cover". Is it a case of familiarity breeding contempt?

Working on the 50 game average mentioned earlier, he could be approaching 800 games when he reaches Tinmans age!
